ACKNOWLEDGMENTS September 2007

Since the beginnings of its a development in 1983, the AIRS/INFO LINE Taxonomy (formally titled A Taxonomy of Human Services: A Conceptual Framework with Standardized Terminology and Definitions for the Field) has benefited from the generous assistance of many people who have shared their expertise with us and helped us identify distinct human service concepts, the appropriate placement of those concepts in the hierarchy and clear, concise and accurate wording for preferred terms and definitions. A variety of authoritative publications have also been used in the design of both the structure and the contents of the Taxonomy, and many publishers have given us permission to quote, sometimes extensively, from their copyrighted materials. Also utilized in our research were brochures produced by agencies providing a targeted service; a variety of other human service taxonomies, thesauri and dictionaries; and, of course, a myriad of informative Web sites that are now available on the Internet. Below are the acknowledgments for those resources. NOTE: some of the Web sites were accessed a number of years ago and the links may no longer be viable. However, because we still want to acknowledge our use of their material, we have not removed the references.

72 Consultation Acknowledgments

Special thanks go a number of individuals and organizations who helped us review, refine and/or further develop sections of the Taxonomy. We acknowledge below all of the people who have contributed their time and expertise.

March – December, 2005

Beginning in March of 2005, 211 L.A. County (previously INFO LINE of Los Angeles) began a working relationship with InformCanada to "Canadianize" the Taxonomy in a systematic way. Thanks to Ontario Trillium Foundation funding made available by 211 Ontario, an editorial team headed by Clive Jones worked hard to develop English language Canadian terms and definitions and modify some existing Taxonomy terms to produce the English language "Starter Taxonomy." This is seen as an important first step in sharing databases throughout the province and encouraging a coordinated approach to 211 in Ontario and across Canada. Members of the Editorial Team are: John Allec (Findhelp Information Services, Toronto), Barbara McLachlan (Information Windsor), Ruth Reedman (Lunenberg County, Nova Scotia), Julie Giesbrecht (Information Niagara), Ross Cooling (Community Connection Collingwood), Christine Geoffrion (Information Quinte), Diane Murdoch (City of Calgary), Lorraine Bilocq-Lebeau (Information and Referral Centre of Greater Montreal), Sylvie Regimbal (Veterans Affairs Canada) and Georgia Sales (211 LA County, California). In addition, consultations are being held with a National Review Team to assess applicability of draft terms in other regions of Canada. Members of the Review Team are: Todd Turnbull (Community Information Centre Kitchener-Waterloo), Hugh Leschot (Information Services Vancouver), Peter Lux (Prince Edward Island), Edward Mah (Contact Manitoba) and Maggie Fowlie (Edmonton Support Network).

January – July, 2004

Thanks go to Susan Shepherd with the National Association of State Units on Aging (NASUA) who provided expert information and advice in helping us restructure residential housing options section of the Taxonomy. She also helped us amalgamate the separate sections on supportive housing for older adults and people with disabilities into a single section that more accurately addresses the needs of both populations; and reviewed and helped us update terminology and definitions for Medicare related services. NASUA’s support has long been key in ensuring that the sections of the Taxonomy relating to aging services are accurate and complete. We are very grateful that support for the ongoing development of the Taxonomy is part of their workscope.

June, 2003 – December, 2003

211 LA County received a contract from INFO LINE, Inc. in Akron, Ohio to significantly expand the Organizational Development and Management section of the Taxonomy for use by the Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNE) in their database of consultants serving the nonprofit sector. Many people were instrumental in helping in that developmental effort. Thanks go to Susan Griffin of CNE who worked with us on draft after draft of the revised sections; to Putnam Barber, President of the Evergreen State Society, Russy Sumariwalla, Founder-President of Global Philanthropy & Nonprofit, and Lisa Spellman of the Rapid Creek Group (RCG) who conducted comprehensive reviews; to Joy Folkedal of BoardSource who reviewed the Board Development section; to Marianne Galleon and Greg Way of 211 LA County who helped develop the hierarchy logic and definitions for the Information Technology Management section; to Steve Gill for assistance with definitions in the Organizational Assessment and Evaluation section, to Sara Hamilton, AIRS’ training manager, for help with the training terms; to Michael S. Hamm, Michael S. Hamm and Associates, for review of the Credentialing Programs Development and Management section; to Charlene Hipes of AIRS for assistance with Conference/Convention Planning section; to Julio Puchalt of 211 LA County for reviewing the Financial Management Assistance section; to Anne Ready, Ready for Media for help with the Media Interview Skills Development definition; and to Brad Sales, media relations consultant, for assistance with the Media Relations section. Special thanks to the Georgia Association of Nonprofits for allowing us to utilize “Areas of Practice” section of their consulting application form to help structure this section of the Taxonomy. The form is on their Web site: http://www.nonprofitgeorgia.org/csapp1.html

September, 1997 – March, 2002 (Taxonomy Subscription Files)

73

New material in the subscription files made available during this period includes the results of the Aging Review coordinated by Greg Case at the National Association of State Units on Aging (NASUA), a new and greatly expanded set of Immigration/Naturalization terms developed in conjunction with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York, a new Volunteer Opportunities Section developed in cooperation with David Styers at the Points of Light Foundation, an expanded Mutual Support Groups section developed with assistance from Betty Creary at the NCCC/Helplink program in San Francisco and a new Canadian courts section and other Canada-specific terminology and definitions developed with help from Diane Murdoch at the Information Centre at the City of Calgary. Thanks also go to Brad Vauter, an attorney in private practice who reviewed the Legal Services section and helped us develop a definition for “Low Income Taxpayer Clinics”; and to Anne Fogoros at United Way of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh for the many hours she spent helping with a “face lift” for the Taxonomy. As a result of her efforts, this version of the Taxonomy features user friendly language and more intuitive structures, changes which greatly improve ease of access.

The Disaster Services section of the Taxonomy could not have been created without the hard work of many people who contributed to its development and who reviewed and commented on early drafts. Thanks go to Burt Wallrich from 211 LA County and Bill Butler from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services Disaster Services Section for their assistance in developing the structure of the hierarchy and definitions and to Dave Vargo, Special Red Cross Representative to the FEMA Regional Office in San Francisco, who conducted a comprehensive review and made many valuable suggestions. Also incorporated was information supplied by Dusty Bowenkamp (from the American Red Cross office in Los Angeles), Barbara Cienfuegos (from the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health), Battalion Chief John Tucker (from the Los Angeles County Fire Department) and Miguel Ascarrunz (from the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services); material forwarded to 211 LA County by Virginia Baker with the American Red Cross in Atlanta and Annamaria Swardenski, then Program Manager for the Northern California Disaster Preparedness Network; and information that was downloaded from the FEMA, American Red Cross, NOAA and other disaster-related Web pages.
