This paper also establishes a connection between the frictional behaviour and micro-structure in the snakes. The results confirm the presence of anisotropic friction in the ventral scales of snakes. 1.0 INTRODUCTION The frictional properties always depend upon the microstructure of the specimen that will be subjected to relative motion. Researchers are constantly trying to study and incorporate the microstructure that is naturally available in the plants and animals. -

Surface constructs in snakes reflect desirable design traits for technical surface engineering. Their micro-textural patterns, however, do not lend themselves easily to unified analysis due to species-specific variations in surface geometry and topology. Fractal description is useful in this context since it accentuates the correspondence between patterns especially when responding to tribological phenomena. In this work we examine the surface construction of 14 snake species, representing five families, and evaluate the fractal dimension for each of the skins (both the dorsal and ventral sides) using three different computational algorithms. Our results indicate first that all of the examined species share a common fractal dimension (with a very small variation between species in the order 4-5%). This finding implies that despite the different micro-geometry of texture among species, the skin as a unit responds in a similar manner to many interfacial influences. Introduction In the natural world, emphasis on micro-texture arises in response to the severe demands on efficiency, economy of effort, and on survival. In legless locomotion, not only the reptile has to economize its effort when moving, but also it has to utilize friction (dynamic or static) to generate tractions, balance motion, and to initiate propulsion [1-7]. -

Kenyan Sand Boa Class: Reptilia
Gongylophis colubrinus loveridgei Kenyan Sand Boa Class: Reptilia. Order: Squamata. Family: Boidae. Other names: Egyptian Sand Boa; East African Sand Boa Physical Description: Sand boas have stout bodies and are competent burrowers. They have small eyes and hard small scales to protect their skin from the grit of sand. There is a great deal of sexual dimorphism, females generally becoming much larger than males. Most grow around 2 feet in length. The boas are members of the family of snakes called Boidea which is represented by about 40 species of snakes. The name boidea is derived from a traditional Brazilian language that described the anaconda as mboi. Members of this family are found in the tropics of the Americas, Africa, Madagascar, Asia and a few species on the West coast of North America. They range in size from sand boas which seldom grow more than 3 feet in length to one of the largest snakes in the world, the anaconda, which has been recorded at over 35 feet long! Diet in the Wild: Their primary diet consists of rodents, but they have also been known to prey on lizards and birds Diet at the Zoo: mice Habitat & Range: Found in eastern Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, Niger, Egypt and Lybia. They are only found in low altitude areas. The majority spend much of their time basking below the surface of the sand, with only their eyes or head exposed on the surface. When a potential prey approaches they erupt out of the sand, bite and subdue their prey by constriction. -
