My office has audited City Council expense accounts; investigated and documented the City’s failure to bill and collect substantial amounts of grant money owed the City, and developed a plan to reduce lost earnings; identified and collected over $1.9 million in under-reported licensing revenue; and surveyed the practices of more than twenty Police departments across the country to help Berkeley police address current staffing shortages and future budget challenges. I have also partnered with Vista College and City staff to teach accounting classes for City employees. With your support, I will continue working on your behalf to identify and analyze City problems in the effort to improve our City’s performance. To ensure the Auditor’s independence from the City Council, I do not accept endorsements from Mayoral or Council incumbents or candidates. I will bring new energy to rally the City to support our schools and young people, improve city services, and make Berkeley an environmental leader again. As your State Assemblymember, I passed landmark environmental legislation, dramatically expanding parks and open space. I brought critical funding to Berkeley’s schools. I am a person who gets things done. The incumbent has been on the Council for 20 years. For the past 8 years — although the economy was good -- our schools deteriorated, affordable rental housing diminished, Berkeley fell behind in environmental protection, and relations with the University of California declined. Berkeley deserves better. As Mayor, I will provide the leadership to meet these challenges. I have worked effectively with Berkeley residents, neighboring cities, and state and federal lawmakers. I’ll bring this G:\ELECTIONS\Candidates\MAYOR\BATES\Candidate Statement.doc experience to the issues that affect our city and will insist that the public, at all times, is treated with respect. I am supported by Congresswoman Barbara Lee, County Supervisor Keith Carson, and Berkeley residents from every neighborhood, young and old, renters and homeowners alike. Together we can bring out the best in Berkeley. For more information about my campaign: www.tombates.org or call 486-8736. 10.
