GIORGIO MARCHETTI
DEPUTY GENERAL SECRETARY & DIRECTOR OF COMPETITIONS, UEFA Giorgio Marchetti joined football’s European governing body in February 2004 as Director of Professional Football and Marketing. Following a UEFA reorganization, Giorgio became UEFA Director of Competitions in 2007. In this role he has been responsible for all UEFA club and national team competitions, at senior and youth level. In December 2016 he became Director of Football, being given responsibility over technical and development matters. At the same time he was promoted to UEFA Deputy General Secretary.
Giorgio Marchetti has a long and extensive experience of Italian and European football on both the administrative and commercial fronts and he has contributed greatly to raising the profile of the European football industry. During his career Giorgio has been an integral figure in some of the key issues and developments in European football governance, such as regulation of transfers and competition models. MICHELE CENTENARO
GENERAL SECRETARY, EUROPEAN CLUB ASSOCIATION Michele Centenaro is the General Secretary of the European Club Association. He started his professional career in the sports industry at the Italian sporting goods manufacturer Diadora Spa where he eventually held the position of Worldwide Director Sponsorship & Communication. He then joined the European football governing body UEFA as Head of Club Competitions where he was notably responsible for the development of UEFA’s prime club competitions, such as the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup, today known as the UEFA Europa League. His strong connections to and deep knowledge of European club football have allowed him to successfully perform the role of General Secretary of ECA for nearly a decade. STEFANO BERTOLA
CHIEF OF STAFF, JUVENTUS Stefano Bertola, 50, is an Italian citizen born and raised in Turin, where he graduated in Economics and Business. His 25 year-long career is split in two between Finance and Football. In his first professional years he served in a variety of roles in financial corporations, from insurance to venture capital. In 2001 he joined EXOR Group, the holding company of the Agnelli Family, acting as Head of Consolidated Reporting.
In 2005 he was appointend in the Board of Administration of Juventus FC and one year later joined the club as Head of Planning, Control and Special Projects. In this capacity, he played a prominent role in the turnaround of the club following relegation, which culminated with the opening of the New Stadium in 2011. He would then move to the United States as the club’s representative for International Expansion, where he also earn an MBA in Sport Management and delved into the specificities of American professional sports. Back to the club’s headquarters, he started working alongside the newly appointed Chairman, Andrea Agnelli, both at Juventus FC and at ECA, first as a consultant and then again in different corporate roles. SECRETARY GENERAL - EUROPE, FIFPRO Theo van Seggelen has fiercely defended the interests of football players for decades.A fter a brief playing career in the Netherlands, he studied law, in Leiden, where he resides to this day, and committed himself to the pursuit of fair working conditions for all professional football players worldwide. As the General Secretary of FIFPRO, the global players’ union located near Amsterdam, he has helped establish player associations on every continent that offer assistance to tens of thousands of professional footballers. He remembers with great fondness the day Belgian player Jean-Marc Bosman achieved his landmark victory at the European Court of Justice in 1995. With the help of Van Seggelen and FIFPRO, Bosman stayed the course in a five-year legal battle that rocked the transfer market and changed the face of football forever.
