Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

I would venture to say February 28 that most of us have a nega:ve reac:on when hearing that word. For some of Parent/Child you, it may bring back memories of geng in trouble at school, or being Dedica:on Class punished for wrongdoing at home. For others, it may cause memories of rigidness and structure in a classroom. Some of you may have even felt crushed at some point in your life because of discipline received from a parent or elder. March 21 Parent/Child Dedica:on I want to challenge you to look at discipline in a new way. Start thinking of Church Bible Drill discipline as a training process and not as punishment. Discipline comes from the La:n root, discipere, which means “to grasp intellectually or analyze March 28 thoroughly” from dis- “apart” + capere- “take.” When parents discipline their kids, they are taking apart a problem in order to thoroughly analyze it. Discipline Regional Bible Drill is meant to prevent future problems, not just solve immediate problems. It teaches, instructs, and trains. Discipline is more about teaching our children Children’s Ministry what to do than about teaching them what not to do. When we discipline them, we show them the beaer way.

Their first album featuring the lineup of Burke Shelley, Tony Bourge (Guitars) and Ray Phillips (Drums) was released in 1971 and the band began touring relentlessly both in the United States and Europe.
