SEEING GOLD LSC WEEKLY AWARDS The Sept. 6 game against Humboldt State marked Texas A&M-Kingsville’s first ever GOLD OUT game. The Javelinas wore gold Offensive jerseys to commemorate the four championship reunion teams, 1959, 1969, 1974 and 1979. All four teams earned NAIA Champion- Week 1: Tyrik Rollison, A&M-Commerce ships and the 1979 team was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame on Friday, Sept. 5. Week 2: Collin Strahan, Tarleton State The gold jerseys were auctioned off and Saturday’s season opener marked the first time in at least six decades that the Hogs Week 3: Jake Glover, Midwestern State wore gold uniforms. He retired from coaching after the 1976 season but continued as athletic director Week 8: until 1982. Week 9: While his record and his honors are unsurpassed, he was a pioneer in football. Steinke recruited in 1960 and he Week 10: became one of the first black football players at an integrated school in Texas, and one of the first in the South. Blanks served as a team captain in 1963, another first for a black player at an integrated school in the state or South. Stories of the obstacles Steinke and his teams faced in the seasons after Blanks joined the team are numerous. In the latter years of his coaching career, Steinke left the sidelines and went into the stands to call plays. “The worst place to watch a game in on the sidelines,” Steinke would say at the time. back Billy Martin to rush for over 150 yards on two occasions. Under Martinez’s tutelage, Markeith Wesley earned first team LSC South and second team All-Region honors and Jorge Guerra grabbed honorable mention LSC South honors.

In 2007, Martinez molded a group of young players and newcomers into a cohesive unit.

In 2006 Martinez coached yet another offensive lineman to All-America honors as John Cook earned first team All-America honors from the American Football Coaches Association.

In 2005 two of his linemen earned All-Lone Star Confer- ence honors. James Cardenas was named second team All-LSC, while Van Nelson earned honorable mention honors. Former Javelina All-American Jaime Martinez is in his 10th season overall as the offensive line coach and recruiting Martinez, a native of nearby Beeville, was a standout for coordinator at Texas A&M-Kingsville. In 2010, Martinez had a trio of seniors, but had to do some mixing and matching positions due to a number of injuries. The line started the season a little slowly, but eventually melded into a strong group. They had a four game stretch where they allowed only one sack. He had two lineman named Second Team LSC South and another earn Honorable Mention honors.

Martinez had a veteran group of linemen (two seniors and three juniors) to work with in 2009 and it showed. The unit blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher and 2,500-yard passer for the first time in school history. As a group, they allowed only 14 sacks and did not allow any sacks in half of the team’s games despite the team throwing 418 passes on the season. Left guard Markeith Wesley earned Third Team Football Gazette All-America honors and left tackle Jorge Guerra earned Second Team Daktronics Super Region Four honors. Four of the five starters earned all-LSC South honors.

In 2008, Martinez’s line showed great improvement. The line provided protection for a school record setting passing offense. The team attempted 430 passes and was sacked just 22 times while averaging 298.7 yards passing per game, 12th best in the nation. Additionally, the line cleared the way for running
