VOLUME XIX, NO. 46 KINGSVILLE, TEXAS 78363 JULY 25, 2019 1979 National Championship Football Team To Celebrate Its 40th Anniversary Nov. 8-9 The 1979 Texas A&I football team will be one of three Javelina national championship squads to Darrell Green celebrate anniversaries this fall. The ’79 squad won the sixth national trophy in an 11-year period. The team has been inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame. Fourteen members of the team and staff have been inducted into the Hall individually or with other teams. These are players Juan Castillo, Randy Friedrich, Andy Hawkins, Robert Pool, Durwood Roquemore, Mike Sheffield, Glenn Starks, Martin Stroman and Robert Young. Coaches previously inducted are , Pete Murray and Young. John Randle Staff members are trainer Willie Gipson and sports information director Fred Nuesch. The 1979 football team was picked to finish third in the . The team compiled a 12-1 record en route to the seventh national trophy for the Javelina program. Harms took over the head position two months before the start of the season. He had been the Javelina offensive coordinator in 1974 and 1975 before going to Baylor. GARRETT ALEXANDER, WHO finished his eligibility with the Javelina baseball team last spring, is a pitcher with the Swift Current team in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. The squad is in the Western Canadian Baseball League.

TWO LSC TEAMS ranked among the NCAA Division II leaders in women’s basketball attendance in 2018-19. West Texas A&M averaged 940 a game and that ranked 21st. Angelo State was 24th with 895 a game. Northern (S.D.) State led the division with an average of 2,609 a game. The Lone Star Conference was fourth among the Division II leagues in attendance, averaging 572 a contest. The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association had the best attendance figures among the leagues with an average of 1,053 a game.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE notes: …Cameron and Texas Woman’s claimed the 2018-19 Lone Star Conference Academic Excellence Award. Cameron took the men’s honor for the first time and TWU was the women’s recipient for the fifth time. The Aggies and Pioneers will each receive a cash reward and custom trophy. Cameron had the top team grade point average in outdoor track and field and TWU had top team GPAs in basketball, soccer and volleyball.
