The Pulicat Lake, Adjoining the Bay of Bengal Is a Shallow Water Body, Bordering the East Coast of India and Located 40 Km North of Chennai
ENVIRONMENTAL GEOCHEMISTRY OF THE PULICAT LAKE, SOUTH INDIA PURANIK GAYATRI RANGANATH JUNE-2000 ABSTRACT The Pulicat lake, adjoining the Bay of Bengal is a shallow water body, bordering the east coast of India and located 40 km north of Chennai. The lake is one of the largest salt-water lake in India that supports a wide range of socioeconomic and cultural activities. The primary aim of this study is to understand the biogeochemical processes of the Pulicat lake ecosystem in order to preserve the ecological and environmental characteristics of this fragile ecosystem. Seasonal samples of water, bed, suspended and core sediments were collected over a one-year period in three zones (southern-channel, central and northern regions) of the Pulicat lake. The lake receives fresh water discharge only during monsoon, from two seasonal rivers, the Arani discharging into the southern region of the lake (zone I) and the Kalangi discharging into the northwestern region of the lake (zone III). The Buckingham canal, running parallel to the coastline discharges sewage contaminated water and industrial effluents into the Pulicat lake. Due to the limited freshwater supply and tidal action, the mouth of the lake gets silted up and closed during the dry season. Understanding the spatial and seasonal variations in the water chemistry was one of the primary aspects of this study. The chemical composition of the surface water indicates a strong influence by seawater during the summer and diluted by river water during the monsoon season. The results obtained indicate that the dominant cations and anions of the surface water are in the order of Cl>Na>S04>K>Mg>HC03>Ca. -

Introduction
CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Adyar river overflowing CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Floods of 2015 In* November - December 2015, Chennai and its suburban areas received multiple torrential rain spells. In the worst affected districts of Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur, the floods associated with the rains claimed 289 lives due to drowning, electrocution, wall collapse etc. The floods inundated 23.25 lakh houses and put life out of gear for several days. Floods are not new to the city; Chennai had experienced catastrophic flooding in 1943, 1976, 1985, 1998, 2002, and 2005 due to heavy rains associated with cyclonic activity. Chennai receives sixty percentage of its annual average rainfall of 1,324 mm during North East Monsoon, between October and December, every year. The contours of Chennai and its suburban areas have an average elevation of 6.7 metre above Mean Sea Level (MSL), with few isolated hillocks in the south west with maximum height of 60 metre above MSL. Adyar, Cooum and Kosasthalaiyar are the three main rivers in Chennai Metropolitan Area1 (CMA). Buckingham Canal, constructed as a navigational canal in 1806, along the coast, flows through CMA, connects the three rivers. Besides the three rivers and the Buckingham Canal, a host of smaller nullahs also play their role in draining rain water. The three major tanks in CMA are Cholavaram (capacity 1.005 TMC2), Redhills (3.300 TMC) and Chembarambakkam (3.645 TMC). Cholavaram Tank is the secondary storage tank, receiving water from the Poondi Reservoir, which lies outside CMA. Redhills Tank is the main source of water supply to Chennai City and during storm events, water is released into Redhills surplus channel, which enters the Kosasthalaiyar River and discharges into the sea. -

These films actualize region as a cinematic imaginary through its authenticity markers – caste/ist practices explicitly, which earlier films constructed as a ‘trope’. The paper uses the concept of Heterotopias to analyse the recurrence of spectacle spaces in the construction of Madurai, and the production of caste in contemporary films. In this pursuit, it interrogates the implications of such spatial discourses. Spectacle spaces: Production of caste in recent Tamil films To foreground the study of caste in Tamil films and to link it with the rise of ‘caste- gestapo’ networks that execute honour killings and murders as a reaction to ‘inter-caste love dramas’ in Tamil Nadu,1 let me narrate a political incident that occurred in Tamil Nadu – that of the formation of a socio-political movement against Dalit assertion in December 2012. -
