Thank you for the warm welcome many of you have [City], [State], [Zip] extended since I arrived in November; I look forward to meeting more of you as you create wonderful memories during visits to RMSC. A little about me: when I was 11, my elementary school class took a field trip to the Strasenburgh Planetarium. That trip changed my life. I couldn’t stop thinking about the size and scale of the solar system, galaxy, and universe. I went on to earn a degree in space sciences and have spent my career working at science museums and informal learning institutions across the United States. Most recently, I was Vice President of Audience and Community Engagement at the Milwaukee Public Museum, a natural and cultural history museum that includes the largest planetarium in Wisconsin. I’ve also held leadership positions at the Franklin Institute Science Museum, the Long Island Children’s Museum, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, and the Griffith Observatory. Connecting museum, planetarium, and nature center visitors of all ages to the wonders of exploration in science, natural history, and our shared cultural background is my passion, and I’m excited to be back home to make a difference in the place that first inspired me. -

Rochester, NY Submission to the Downtown Revitalization Initiative 6/10/2016 Executive Summary The revitalization of downtown Rochester must engage and retain young adults as residents who want to live and work in cities. A recent Urban Land Institute and National League of Cities supported a study of downtown Rochester, NY identified an immediate need to re-activate the Genesee Riverfront and Main Street to target diverse young adults and bring vibrancy to the fronts of downtown buildings. Critical to re-activating Rochester’s downtown is giving the job to rebuild it to the people who need the work the most. Thanks to the efforts of the Governor’s Rochester Anti-Poverty Task Force and the local Rochester Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative (RMAPI), the anti-poverty program pilot area is adjacent to Rochester’s downtown district. The program will provide employment supports (e.g. daycare and transportation) to stabilize families and connect them to Rochester’s downtown success. Rochester’s downtown district, the Center City District (CCD), is experiencing dramatic residential growth. Developers partnered with government to create new living spaces within iconic buildings. Despite the 1.7 million people visiting the district annually and record investment in downtown growing high tech firms, retail and walkable amenities do not support 18 hours of activity. Foot traffic by young adults connecting downtown living and work will bridge the gap between living and work that exists in downtown Rochester, NY. Young adults are drawn to an iconic city and will create the demand for first floor retail that will give jobs and stabilize neighborhoods. -

The 21st century, however, is the beginning ofu newmillen- nium.Newspapers report apprehension in the corporate and governmental realms wheregreat dependence on computers and electronic communication has developed irreversibly. A look at Rochester’s passing century gives barely a glimpse of the developments in business and manufacture, transportation and communication, education and lifestyles, roles ofwomen and newcomers and changes in the city itself: The history of a century can seldom be written by decades, rather our histories are more often divided by events, trends, periods- they expand and contract- elastic in their impor- tance. Events ofgreat importance in their day become lost through the century until some new event lifts them out to make connections and greater understanding ofour present day. This article makes no attempt to be comprehensive-only to present a picture of where we have come from- how we got to where we are today. -

We’ve learned to be nimble during the yearlong pandemic and discovered that our virtual programs are reaching a whole new audience. annual report | 2016 Dear Friends, From the youngest to the oldest in our community, we proudly serve tens of thousands of individuals. While Rochester continues to be gravely affected by the opioid epidemic that is spreading across the country, and the ongoing struggle to lift children out of poverty, Catholic Family Center maintains compassionate and high quality services to Rochester’s most vulnerable citizens. You will hear from Ron Rizzo about the principles behind our prosperity initiatives in Rochester, and will have the opportunity to meet Erica King, who leads our Crisis Resource Services, to understand the impact of adding case management services to those in crisis. And, as always, we have a client story or two to further illustrate the positive change your support brings to our community. Other bright moments from 2016 include $6M of funding awarded to CFC for new initiatives to support this work: approximately $3M over two years to pilot 2 Partner- Navigator offerings that have proven effective in other communities; $1.3M over four years to integrate primary health care into our behavioral health services; and $1.7M to renovate and expand Sanctuary House, which provides shelter and housing for women and their children. Our Mental Health Clinic opened a new satellite clinic at 1645 St. Paul Street. And we began taking intact families, including fathers, at Women’s Place, now called Place of Hope. CFC is now one of three emergency shelters that provide services to men with families or children. Our results and community contribution in 2016 are cause for celebration and gratitude for all you have done to support the mission of Catholic Family Center. -

Historic Resources Survey 2000 A Report on the Built Environment of 1936-1950 Copyright © 2000 - City of Rochester, New York H R S G Overview Historic Resource Survey of the Built Environment, 1936-1950 The City of Rochester conducted this Historic Resources Survey in cooperation with New York State Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation. The survey commenced in the summer of 1998 and concluded in April, 2000. Over 6,000 buildings were investigated in a search for structures eligible for nomination to the State and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Two City of Rochester databases were used to identify properties for inclusion in the search: The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the Building Information System (BIS). From this large group, two districts and fifteen individual properties are recommended for State or National Register listing. The nominated structures range from residential to industrial, and include a gas station and a television studio. Each recommended resource represents the best example of its building type existing in Rochester today. The selected districts and resources display better than average architectural design and integrity, and reflect specific architectural, development or historic trends seen in Rochester. The organizational structure of the survey places buildings in thematic groups which identify a structure’s primary function. Food, Wine,Beer As the nation’s first frontier, Rochester drew settlers from around the world, and they brought their recipes with them. More than 200 years later, we’re a smorgasbord of traditional and contemporary cuisines. LOCAL FOOD • Since 1905, the Rochester Public Market has offered some of the area’s best seasonal produce, meat, fish, poultry, dairy products and baked goods. • Legendary Wegmans — still family owned after all these years - has enough prepared foods, and seating areas, to be one of the region’s best places for lunch or dinner. • Myriad farmers markets from May to October, some of which continue indoors year round. Some farms also have year-round stores or delivery services. • Since 1880, Rochester has been home to Zweigle’s, originator of the “white hot,” a concoction of spiced beef, pork and veal. The company also makes all-beef hot dogs, deli meats and sausages, including several chicken varieties. • Nearly every casual eatery has come up with its own version of the “garbage plate”made famous by Nick Tahou’s restaurant — a concoction of macaroni salad, fries, hot dogs or hamburgers and hot sauce that can only be appreciated by tasting it. Some upscale restaurants have created gourmet varieties, too. • Chicken French, an old Rochester recipe that uses an egg-based batter and a lemon- tinged sauce, has also found its way onto various menus and spun off “French-style” seafood and vegetables — particularly artichokes. Sweet Treats • Abbott’s Frozen Custard has been making their famous custard ice cream for more than a century. • Stever’s, a Park Avenue institution that has produced homemade candy since 1946.
