AND PARISH NEWS SEPTEMBER 2017

1

Dear Friends When a rector/vicar retires it's not only the churches which are affected. Deirdre West's ministry was very much about community and there are many families across our seven parishes who have reason to be grateful for baptisms, weddings and funerals during her time as our incumbent. Vacancies also are about working together across church, civic, and social activities to be the very best we can be for the good of all. It may seem a bit wobbly without someone at the helm but there is nothing better than a challenge to bring out the best in collaboration and mutual support. It can work the other way but I am confident that with the blessing of our excellent Lay Elders (and a couple of resident retired priests, plus a couple of other locals) we will flourish together. A really good example of collaboration was set up by the young people and leaders of the Chalkwell Bay Sea Cadets from Leigh-on-Sea in Essex. They camped at recently (you can read more about them later in the magazine) and joined us at church extending hospitality to us at their camp. They were a model for organization and team work whilst also having lots of fun. Our Lord chose his companions from very differing backgrounds and abilities and provided us with an example of togetherness, sometimes in adversity, but never giving up on the main focus of the Kingdom. I pray we will work together during this time of waiting for another Minister to lead us and at the same time we will be relaxed and confident enough to have fun in all we do with and for one another. I look forward to playing my part in moving on together. Every blessing, Deirdre (P) Revd Canon Deirdre Parmenter

A Message from Revd Deirdre West

Thank you to all at Brandeston who contributed to my retirement gifts. I have put the money to my travel fund.

I am back safe and sound from a truly amazing adventure though a bit nibbled by some insects; the lions were so well behaved in comparison!

I look forward to seeing you all soon.

With love and blessings,

Deirdre

PARISHES OF BRANDESTON AND KETTLEBURGH All Saints’ Church, Brandeston

Following the retirement of Revd West, you may notice some minor changes to the services at Brandeston Church.

The 9.30 services in Brandeston on the 2nd Sunday of the month will sometimes include Holy Communion, but will also sometimes be a morning worship service. This service will be less formal with readings prayers and hymns. It would be an ideal service for those people who may not have been to church for a while or who are not so confident about attending a communion service.

We would very much welcome you to join us in our worship, whatever your denomination. Our regulars already include people who are not from traditional Church of backgrounds. If you would like to come but have problems with transport, please give me a ring and I can arrange for someone to pick you up.

Similarly, we can make the service child friendly, so if you would like to bring children to the service please let me know and I will sort out some activities to keep them involved. They too, would be very welcome.

Mary Baker 685807

WEDNESDAY HOLY COMMUNION & FRIDAY PRAYERS Did you know that you can go to church on other days apart from Sundays? In our new Orebeck Benefice (the churches of Kettleburgh, Brandeston, Easton, , , Marlesford and Parham), other regular times of worship are held: • Every Wednesday at 10.00am there is a short service of Holy Communion at Hacheston church. This is led by Rev Richard Ginn. • On the Friday before our 1st Sunday of the month Benefice service, there is an informal time of prayer in the church where we meet that month. This takes place at 4.00pm. Everyone is welcome to join us. Of course, our churches are always open for you if you want to sit, or pray, in a quiet, special place.

Wickham Market Flower Club July Report

Our demonstrator for the evening was Wendy Munnion whose topic was ‘A Very British Summer.’ There were six arrangements depicting 6 events which take place from May to September every year. The first arrangement was of ‘The Chelsea Flower Show’, with a small picket fence, the next arrangement was of ‘Asco’t with a display in a Hat Box of a Floral Bonnet, then there was ‘Wimbledon’ with a symmetrical design in Wimbledon colours of purple and lime green with Anthuriums suggesting rackets, after that was an exotic foliage and Lilies in a big heavy pot to represent ‘The Queen’s Garden Party,’ followed by ‘Cowes week’, which represented the seascape using Statice, blue and yellow Iris and Gypsophila as sea spray decorated with a yacht in high seas as a focal point. The last arrangement was ‘The last Night at The Proms,’ in red, white and blue flowers along with a Union Jack. Wendy’s arrangements were wonderfully colourful with interesting details.

KETTLEBURGH VILLAGE FETE JUNE 2017

To everyone who helped in anyway – before, during and after the event -a big thank you from the Kettleburgh Village Fete Committee for making this event so successful.

Not only did you raise over £3,000 to support the village hall and church fabric fund, but once again large crowds came and had fun, attracted not only this year by our traditional stalls, games and the dog show, but also by the glorious sunshine. Our new County Councillor Robin Vickers came to see us as did Roy Hudd and his wife which was a nice surprise.

All of the stalls were busy with visitors, and a special thanks to the BBQ and refreshments stalls which were in high demand and coped with a thirsty and hungry crowd all afternoon, in very hot conditions.

Thanks, as always, to the local businesses and Kettleburgh residents who donated some fabulous grand draw prizes and once again to John Bater for welcoming the cow into his field to deliver the cow pat which enabled Sandra Griffiths to win £100.

Our fete benefits from Ron & Debbie’s generosity in letting us use the garden at their Chequers pub and all the support they give us. And a very special thanks goes to Graham Mooney for being the chief organizer and co- ordinating everyone’s involvement.

Finally, we cannot conclude without recognizing the beauty that was Malcolm Todd – have a look at the photos on the ‘past events’ section of the Kettleburgh Village website – he’s the one in the dress and too much lipstick!

See you all next year!!

NEXT YEAR IN 2018 !!

Brandeston’s Hidden Garden’s in 2018 A fund- raising event for Brandeston’s All Saint’s Church and Village Hall Weekend June 9th and 10th 2018 All garden’s welcome. Details to follow in the next few months, so watch this space.

History Corner - Early Justice Before the advent of the police force in England, a person who felt he had been wronged by another, could appeal to a person of importance such as the Parish Constable or the incumbent who would decide if there was a case to answer. If so, the next step would be to appear before the Justice of the Peace who would take sworn statements. These were entered on official forms which were bound into a ledger. In this area, the JP in the early 19th century was the Rev George Turner, Rector of Monewden and Kettleburgh. One of his volumes survives and it reveals a variety of local 19 cases, some of which would have pleased the "red top" newspapers today! Unfortunately, you would have to consult the local newspaper of the time and hope they had reported on the case to find what punishment was inflicted.

January 1813. "Complaint by John Collins of Brandeston, that on the evening of Sunday 3rd January 1813, William Hall the younger of Brandeston aforesaid, labourer, did violently assault him, the said John Collins, by violently kicking him twice in his private parts and several times on other parts of his body." September 1813." Charles Jackson, of Kettleburgh, farmer complaineth and maketh an oath that Rose Bartrum of Kettleburgh, a servant in husbandry,(1), on the night of Saturday 18th , after she had gone upstairs as if she were going to bed, did go down again, unlock the door and let herself out and was absent from the house all, or the greater part of the night at a public house in Kettleburgh known as "The Chequers" without the knowledge of him, Charles Jackson, her said master, leaving the house open." (She had been accompanied by another girl living in the house who faced similar charges.) I can't imagine that Rose and her friend were away all night, more likely all evening. Life, was probably dull for a young woman in service in those days and the spirited Rose, decided to do something about it! Another task that fell to the JP was the investigation as to who was the father of any illegitimate child to be born in a parish to make the father responsible, financially, for the child's care thus saving the overseers the expense. 20th June 1817. "Martha Durrant, swears that Samuel Patrick of Monewden, a miller, is the father of her unborn child." "Honour, wife of William Smith, a soldier, absent on foreign service, which said Honour Smith is now residing in Monewden. She declares that she is with child and does charge Henry Catchpole, labourer of Monewden with being the father." Peter Driver.

20

(1) Servant in husbandry denoted a servant, unlike a labourer, who lived in the employer’s house. More commonly applied to male servants. Rose was probably a house servant with a few feeding duties around the farm.

Thinking of buying a caravan for £5000?

Hello Villagers, We are selling our caravan (currently sat on our drive ready for viewings and ready to go) and wondered if anyone in the village would be interested or knows of anyone else that would be interested. I have attached a couple of photos but viewings are welcomed and highly recommended as it is a lovely caravan .It is a Swift Eccles Elite Searcher 2003 with only 3 owners since new. It is a twin axle (meaning it is more stable to tow), 4 berth, fixed bed, is in good condition and very rarely towed. It has been stored in a covered barn by us for the past 3 years when not in use. It has a hitch lock, wheel lock, external waste tank and external and internal water tank. It is CRIS registered (card will be shown as proof when sold). Other features include:

• gas and electric water heating • gas cooker, electric fridge and microwave • full rear bathroom with separate shower cubicle, wash basin and toilet • fixed double bed and wall hung TV • external sound system for use in awning • double sockets with USB ports • multi directional TV aerial on roof • alarm system.

Thank you, Lucy Nobbs, 33 The Street..Tel: 01728 684422
