FROM THE PASTOR: IS THE PRAYER OF THE ROSARY OUTDATED? (Part 5)

Why pray the Rosary today? The simple answer is certainly, to grow in holiness and in one's prayer life. Though the Rosary is not the only way to achieve this but in its simplicity the Rosary is a very powerful and effective prayer. I always wonder why the learned saints and Popes take the time to pray the rosary. They must have found a secret in it, as an authentic school of Christian life.

Many of the popes have championed the Rosary as a powerful, multi-layered devotion. The theologian Romano Guardini described praying the rosary as "participation in the life of Mary, whose focus was Christ." Pope Leo XIII also viewed the rosary as a vital means to participate in the life of Mary and to find the way to Christ. Pope emeritus Benedict XVI said, “The rosary is a means given by the Virgin for contemplating Jesus and, meditating on his life, for loving and following him always more faithfully.”

In praying the Rosary we meditated on the mysteries of our salvation and meditation on these mysteries of salvation is to lead to conversion of heart and change of actions. Contemplation on the mysteries is essentially an act of gratitude through which the heart is "filled with love...hope enlarged, and the desire increases for those things which Christ has prepared for such as have united themselves to Him in imitation of His example and in participation in His sufferings." The popes tell us that the essence is "to recall the mysteries of salvation in succession, while the subject of meditation is mingled and interlaced with the Angelic Salutation and prayer to God the Father."

The popes also teach that the Rosary is intended to influence society as a whole. The holy and powerful life of Jesus Christ is to be a real remedy and cure for the errors afflicting society. The rosary is an accessible reminder of the constant prayer of the Church, the ceaseless prayer of God's people throughout the ages. “The Psalter of Mary, as the rosary is sometimes called, is a remembrance of the Church's deepest nature as a community of continual prayer." (Pope Leo XIII, 1896). “The Rosary is a magnificent and universal prayer for the needs of the Church, the nations and the entire world" (Pope John XXIII). “I would therefore ask those who devote themselves to the pastoral care of families to recommend heartily the recitation of the Rosary.”(Pope St. John Paul II). “Mary joins us, she fights at our side. She supports Christians in the fight against the forces of evil. Especially through prayer, through the rosary. Hear me out, the rosary... Do you pray the Rosary each day? I don't know, are you sure? There we go!” (Pope Francis).

31st. SUNDAY SNAPSHOT. JOHN: DO YOU WANT TO HAVE YOUR LIFE CHANGED FOR THE BETTER? MARY: VERY MUCH SO. JOHN: THEN GIVE UP THE SELF-DELUSION THAT YOU CAN DO IT BY YOUR OWN STRENGTH. MARY: I HAVE GROWN UP KNOWING THAT BY MYSELF, I CAN DO WHAT I WANT WITH MY LIFE. JOHN: NO WAY, ONLY GOD CAN EASILY DO IT JUST AS HE CHANGED THE LIFE OF ZACCHAEUS. MARY: SO I CAN JUST SIT BACK AND WAIT ON GOD? JOHN: NO! JUST HUMBLY ACCEPT GOD’S INVITATION AND COOPERATE WITH EVERY OPPORTUNITY OF HIS GRACE EACH AND EVERY DAY OF YOUR LIFE.
