By Dan Connolly / The Baltimore Sun January 8, 2015 So, the bar was buzzing Wednesday night with the Maryland’s men basketball team on the big screen. We know who we are. As part of our New Year’s coverage, Sun reporters were asked to write about the "athlete to watch” on their beat in 2015.

  • Why Did Cleveland Indians Sign Mike Napoli Instead of Pedro Alvarez?
Why did Cleveland Indians sign Mike Napoli instead of Pedro Alvarez? Hey, Hoynsie Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio – Do you have a question that you'd like to have answered in Hey, Hoynsie? Submit it here or Tweet him at @hoynsie. Hey, Hoynsie: Why did the Indians sign Mike Napoli, 34, for one year to play first base when Pedro Alvarez, 27, was available? Did management know Alvarez hit 27 home runs last season? -- Jimmy Garst, Roanoke, Va. Hey, Jimmy: The Indians did show interest in Alvarez, who was non-tendered by the Pirates and became a free agent. I think a couple of things probably came into play: No. 1, Alvarez was more expensive than the $7 million deal the Indians agreed to with Napoli. No. 2, the Indians felt Napoli helped them two ways – he gave their offense needed pop from the right side of the plate and he improved their defense. Napoli – whose deal should soon be made official – allows the Indians to move Carlos Santana to DH while he will get most of the time at first base. There is no doubt about Alvarez's power, but he made 23 errors at first base last season. I think the Indians preferred Napoli, considering the cost, at first and Santana at DH instead of Santana at first and Alvarez at DH. Hey, Hoynsie: The Reds seem interested in moving outfielder Jay Bruce. Is the Tribe done with its outfield or would it be interested in a guy who is as streaky hitter as there is, but definitely has pop? – Carl Neifer, Cincinnati.

Working Paper Series, Paper No. 06-27 Revenue Sharing in Sports Leagues: The Effects on Talent Distribution and Competitive Balance Phillip Miller† November 2006 Abstract This paper uses a three-stage model of non-cooperative and cooperative bargaining in a free agent market to analyze the effect of revenue sharing on the decision of teams to sign a free agent. We argue that in all subgame perfect Nash equilibria, the team with the highest reservation price will get the player. We argue that revenue sharing will not alter the outcome of the game unless the proportion taken from high revenue teams is sufficiently high. We also argue that a revenue sharing system that rewards quality low-revenue teams can alter the outcome of the game while requiring a lower proportion to be taken from high revenue teams. We also argue that the revenue sharing systems can improve competitive balance by redistributing pivotal marginal players among teams. JEL Classification Codes: C7, J3, J4, L83 Keywords: competitive balance, revenue sharing, sports labor markets, free agency * I thank Dave Mandy, Peter Mueser, Ken Troske, Mike Podgursky, Jeff Owen, and two anonymous referees for valuable comments on earlier drafts. Their suggestions substantially improved the paper. Any remaining errors or omissions are my own. †Phillip A. Miller, Department of Economics, Morris Hall 150, Minnesota State University, Mankato, Mankato, MN 56001, E-mail: [email protected], Phone: 507-389- 5248. 1. Introduction Free agency has been cheered by players and agents but has been scorned by team owners. Player salaries under free agency have expanded to an extent that many fans believe small market teams now have difficulty in competing for playing talent and on the playing field, worsening the competitive balance between teams.

Gary Bedingfield’s Baseball Volume 3, Issue 27 in Wartime Baseball December 2009 www.baseballinwartime.com [email protected] www.baseballinwartime.com in Wartime baseballinwartime.blogspot.com Merry Christmas from Baseball in Wartime Greetings to you all! Yes, it’s that time of year again and I really can’t believe how we got here so quickly. I also can’t believe that this is the 27th issue of the Baseball in Wartime Newsletter. It was in September 2007 that I put together the first two- page edition of this newsletter as a way of sharing information that did generally fit within the scope of the Baseball in Wartime website. Things have certainly grown since those humble beginnings and in October I launched the Baseball in Wartime Blog. The issue I am now pondering over is whether there is still a need for the newsletter in light of the existence of the blog? Do the newsletter and blog serve the same purpose? The advantage of the blog is that it is updated daily, providing you with a constant update on WWII baseball news together with regular features. The newsletter on the other hand, is a monthly release but has the advantage of being printable and is delivered right to your email inbox. I guess, at this stage, I’m looking for feedback. If I get enough positive response for the newsletter then I’ll gladly keep producing it on a monthly basis. If, however, you would rather access this type of information via the blog, then I’ll phase out the newsletter over the next few months.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings February 12, 2019 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1888-The Reds begin a six-week exhibition tour through Texas, Louisiana and Alabama MLB.COM Duke returns to Reds on one-year deal Cincy designates right-hander Lopez for assignment in corresponding move By Mark Sheldon MLB.com @m_sheldon Feb. 11th, 2019 GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- This past offseason featured multiple trades by the Reds, but Monday officially marked their first free-agent acquisition, when lefty reliever Zach Duke signed a one-year, $2 million contract. To make room for Duke, right-handed pitcher Jose Lopez was designated for assignment. Duke, who will turn 36 in April, agreed to terms with Cincinnati on Feb. 2. The club will get added veteran presence in its bullpen. He is a 14-year Major League veteran. In 72 games combined for the Twins and Mariners last season, Duke was 5-5 with a 4.15 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. Over 52 innings, he allowed 57 hits including one home run with 21 walks and 51 strikeouts. Left-handed hitters batted .220 against him, compared to .311 by right-handed hitters. But the Reds do not view the ground-ball pitcher as a one-out left-handed situational reliever. "He's a guy that likes to pitch a full inning and expects to be in there to pitch a full inning," Reds president of baseball operations Dick Williams said. "He's had a lot of success against lefties, but we are comfortable that he's not necessarily going to be a one-out guy." Duke is returning to the Reds after pitching for them during the 2013 season, a stint that helped turn his career around after being released by the Nationals earlier that year.
