Fund Af Småsommerfugle Fra Danmark I 1991 (Lepidoptera) Fund af småsommerfugle fra Danmark i 1991 (Lepidoptera) Otto Buhl, Per Falck, Benny Jørgensen, Ole Karshalt & Knud Larsen Buh!, 0., P. Falck, B. Jørgensen, O. Karshalt & K. Larsen: Records ofMicrolepidop tera from Denmark in 1991 (Lepidoptera). Ent. Meddr 60: 101-110. Copenhagen, Denmark, 1992. ISSN 0013-8851. This artide reparts on interesting Danish Microlepidoptera collected in 1991, and comments on remarkable findings from previous years. The classification and nomenelature follow Schnack (ed.): Ent. Meddr 52: 1-163. Four species are new to the Danish fauna: Elachista triseriatella Stainton, 1854 (Elachistidae) was found in a large sand dune area in the southern part ofWestjut land. According to Traugott-Olsen (1988) there are several similar species in the group, and published information on the biology and distribution can therefore not be trusted. Coleophora boreel/a Benander, 1939 (Coleophoridae) was found in marshland areas in the southern part ofWestjutland. I t has so far only been found in Finland, Norway and Sweden, but is probably overlooked, as i t belongs to a camplex of closely related species. There aresom e variations in adult pattern and genitalia between specimens from different localities within the distribution area, and it can not be ruled out that more species are inelucled ·under the present conc~pt of C. boreella. The biology is unknown. Metzneria santolinella (Amsel, 1936) (Gelechiidae) was found in numerous larvae and adult specimens in a grave! pit near Copenhagen. Cydia grunertiana (Ratzeburg, 1868) (Tortricidae) was found as larvae in bark o f La rix trees in eastern Jutland and on Bornholm. I t has been discussed, if grunertiana mere! y is a form of C. pactolana (Zell.) o r a distinct species. I t is the authors' firm opin ion, that grunertiana is a distin et species. There are smal! but constant differences in the genitalia. The ground colour o f grunertiana is black-grey, in pactolana olive-brown. The underside o f the hindwing is unicolorous in the grunertiana male, whereas male pactolana has a spot oflight yellowish scales. C. grunertiana is with certainty known only from Austria, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Switzerland. The species will be dealt with in a forthcoming artide in Nota Lepidopterologica. The specimens o f Acleris lipsiana (Den. & Schiff.) and Acleris ruJana (Den. & Schiff.) in the calleetion of the Zoological Museum of Capenhagen have been examined. Both species are so variable that examination o f the genitalia can be necessary for identification. The figures in Larsen & Vilhelmsen (1986) are correct. Two new food plants for lipsiana have been discovered: Andromeda polifolia and Rubus chamaemorus. Two specimens of Coleophora ornatipennella (Hb.) have been found in the calleetion o f ZMUC, labelled from a Danish locality. I t is obviously a case of mislabellin g. C. ornatipennella is not found in Denmark. The artide also inelude a number of original biological observations. Foreign readers are wellcome to consult any ofthe authors for further information. Reassessment of forewing pattern elements in Tortricidae (Lepidop- tera). Acta zoologica cracoviensia, 46(3): 269-275. Abstract. Forewing pattern elements of moths in the family Tortricidae are discussed and characterized. An historical review of the terminology is provided. A new system of nam- ing pattern elements is proposed. Key words. Lepidoptera, Tortricidae, forewing pattern, analysis, terminology. Józef RAZOWSKI, Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals, Polish Academy of Sciences, S³awkowska 17, 31-016 Kraków, Poland. E-mail: razowski.isez.pan.krakow.pl I. INTRODUCTION Early tortricid workers such as HAWORTH (1811), HERRICH-SCHHÄFFER (1856), and others pre- sented the first terminology for forewing pattern elements in their descriptions of new species. Nearly a century later, SÜFFERT (1929) provided a more eclectic discussion of pattern elements for Lepidoptera in general. In recent decades, the common and repeated use of specific terms in de- scriptions and illustrations by FALKOVITSH (1966), DANILEVSKY and KUZNETZOV (1968), and oth- ers reinforced these terms in Tortricidae. BRADLEY et al. (1973) summarized and commented on all the English terms used to describe forewing pattern elements. DANILEVSKY and KUZNETZOV (1968) and KUZNETZOV (1978) analyzed tortricid pattern elements, primarily Olethreutinae, dem- onstrating the taxonomic significance of the costal strigulae in that subfamily. For practical pur- poses they numbered the strigulae from the forewing apex to the base, where the strigulae often become indistinct. KUZNETZOV (1978) named the following forewing elements in Tortricinae: ba- sal fascia, subterminal fascia, outer fascia (comprised of subapical blotch and outer blotch), apical spot, and marginal line situated in the marginal fascia (a component of the ground colour).

© Entomologica Fennica. 25 February 2011 Parasitoids (Hymenoptera) of leaf-spinning moths (Lepidoptera) feeding on Vaccinium uliginosum L. along an ecological gradient in central European peat bogs Aurel I. Lozan, Karel Spitzer, Josef Jaro, Andrey Khalaim, Maria Concetta Rizzo, Emilio Guerrieri & Ale Bezdìk Lozan,A.I.,Spitzer,K.,Jaro,J.,Khalaim,A.,Rizzo,M.C.,Guerrieri,E.& Bezdìk, A. 2010: Parasitoids (Hymenoptera) of leaf-spinning moths (Lepidop- tera) feeding on Vaccinium uliginosum L. along an ecological gradient in central European peat bogs. Entomol. Fennica 21: 243253. Parasitoids of leaf-spinning Lepidoptera associated with two isolated central Eu- ropean peat bogs were investigated. Five families of parasitoid Hymenoptera (Braconidae, Ichneumonidae, Eulophidae, Pteromalidae and Encyrtidae) were recorded. Three categories were recognised: (1) primary parasitoids, (2) faculta- tive hyperparasitoids and (3) obligatory hyperparasitoids. Ten species of Braco- nidae, five species and seven marked morphospecies among Ichneumonidae, and three species of Chalcidoidea were identified. Despite of some niche-specific (but less host-specific) parasitoids, all these hymenopterans are likely to be gen- eralists and none of them were confirmed to be habitat and/or host specialists. Unlike their eurytopic (opportunistic tyrphoneutral) parasitoids, the Lepidoptera hosts associated with peat bogs are partially highly stenotopic (tyrphobionts and tyrphophiles). The occurrence of parasitoids compared to their potential hosts was structured along an ecological (mesoclimatic) gradient, so most parasitoids were recorded from margins while stenotopic (narrow habitat adaptation) moths were mostly distributed near the centre of the bog habitat. • January Review of Butterfly, Moth and Other Natural History Sightings 2019
Review of butterfly, moth and other natural history sightings 2019 January January started dry and settled but mostly cloudy with high pressure dominant, and it remained generally dry and often mild during the first half of the month. The second half became markedly cooler with overnight frosts and the last week saw a little precipitation, some which was occasionally wintry. With the mild weather continuing from December 2018 there were a small number of migrant moths noted in January, comprising a Dark Sword-grass at Seabrook on the 5th, a Silver Y there on the 13th and 2 Plutella xylostella (Diamond-back Moths) there on the 15th, whilst a very unseasonal Dark Arches at Hythe on the 4th may have been of immigrant origin. Dark Sword-grass at Seabrook (Paul Howe) Dark Arches at Hythe (Ian Roberts) More typical species involved Epiphyas postvittana (Light Brown Apple Moth), Satellite, Mottled Umber, Winter Moth, Chestnut, Spring Usher and Early Moth. Early Moth at Seabrook (Paul Howe) Spring Usher at Seabrook (Paul Howe) The only butterfly noted was a Red Admiral at Nickolls Quarry on the 1st but the mild weather encouraged single Buff-tailed Bumblebees to appear at Seabrook on the 7th and Mill Point on the 8th, whilst a Minotaur Beetle was attracted to light at Seabrook on the 6th. A Common Seal and two Grey Seals were noted regularly off Folkestone, whilst at Hare was seen near Botolph’s Bridge on the 1st and a Mink was noted there on the 17th. February After a cold start to the month it was generally mild from the 5th onwards.

Sherwood Forest Lepidoptera Historical and modern species lists and records - First Edition 2009 T. and D. Pendleton Introduction to Sherwood Forest Lepidoptera First edition 2009 One aspect of recording which has not changed since the 1800’s, is the lack of attention given by Lepidopterists to the site’s micro lepidoptera. Virtually all This publication is aimed at providing an accurate record of all Sherwood Forest micro records sourced from Carr’s book were attributed to R.E. Brameld, who Lepidoptera recorded from the 1800‘s, the 1900’s, post-2000 records and must have spent many hours in the field recording. Without his work, then much completely up to date with the inclusion of the latest records from 2008 and larger gaps would have appeared in the records. As it is, much work is still follows the same format as we have used in the accompanying publication required to record the many leaf-mining species which Sherwood Forest Sherwood Forest Coleoptera - 2009 Edition. undoubtedly holds. It is by no means a complete list and should not be treated as so, but Recent Lepidoptera surveys and recording represents a hopeful start on the way to producing a definitive Sherwood Forest site list, by trying to gather all available Lepidoptera records in one document. A great deal of moth trapping and recording took place at the Visitor Centre during the 1980’s and has provided some very useful data, which at some time This is the first edition of this project and includes traceable public records in the future, will perhaps be used to enable a comparison with more recent and those held privately by local naturalists and our thanks go to those records and numbers.

  • Summary of Cheshire Moths: 2008-2013
CHESHIRE (VICE COUNTY 58) SUMMARY OF CHESHIRE MOTHS: 2008-2013 Authors: Steve H. Hind and Steve Holmes Date: December 2015 Summary of Cheshire Moths 2008-2013 Introduction With the absence of an annual moth report for six years and following publication of the 2014 report earlier this year, we have attempted to bring together some of the main changes to the counties moth populations since the last county report for 2007. Individual Micro-moth reports were published for 2008 and 2009 in the Journal of the Lancashire & Cheshire Entomological Society, Volumes 133 & 134, for Sessions 2009 & 2010 of the Annual Report & Proceedings but this is the first report to include the counties macro-moths for those years. Unfortunately, the amount of work required to produce a similar type of document to the 2014 report would have taken well over a year or more to complete and as such a more selective approach has been taken; this translates to producing an account for just those species that have either: been reported on very few occasions, or have undergone significant changes, either in terms of distribution or population Summary No fewer than seven new macro-moth and 23 micro-moth species appeared for the first time in Cheshire during the period covered by this publication; an astonishing number brought about by Moth recording continuing to increase during the period, especially of micro-moths. We received a record 8,200 records of micro-moths in 2008, yet this more than doubled to 17,700 in 2013. There are a number of references, particularly within the accounts relating to macro-moths, where mention is made of either: the nth Cheshire record, or only ‘n’ records this century, or only ‘n’ Cheshire records To clarify these comments, they all relate to known, submitted, validated records within the County database.

Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe.

  • Botolph's Bridge, Hythe Redoubt, Hythe Ranges West And
Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR13 G (Botolph’s Bridge, Hythe Redoubt, Hythe Ranges West, and Nickolls Quarry) The tetrad TR13 G contains a number of major local hotspots, with Nickolls Quarry, the Botolph’s Bridge area and part of Hythe Ranges located within its boundaries. As a consequence the tetrad has the richest diversity of breeding birds in the local area, with 71 species having a status of at least possible in the latest BTO Atlas survey. It also had the highest total of species (125) in the winter Atlas survey. Sadly a major housing development is now in progress at the Nickolls Quarry site and much of the best habitat is now being disturbed or lost. Nickolls Quarry has been watched since the late 1940s, though early coverage was patchy, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. As a working quarry the site has undergone significant changes during this time, expanding from two small pits to a much larger area of open water, some of which has since been backfilled. During 2001 to 2004 a series of shallow pools were created which proved particularly attractive to waders. Nickolls Quarry in 1952 Nickolls Quarry in 1998 Looking roughly northwards across the 'old pit' Looking south-west across the site towards the Hythe Roughs towards Dungeness Although a major housing development is underway on the site it still contains some interesting habitats. The lake is easily the largest area of open water in the local area and so remains one of the best areas for wildfowl, particularly during cold weather, for example in December 2010 when there were peak counts of 170 Wigeon, 107 Coot, 104 Pochard, 100 Teal, 53 Tufted Duck, 34 Gadwall, 18 Mute Swan, 12 Pintail, 10 Bewick’s Swan, 8 Shoveler, singles of Goldeneye and Goosander, and 300 White-fronted Geese flew over.
