11/28/2018 Captive Care of Bell’s Hingeback Tortoise, Kinixys belliana - Chadwell Animal Hospital Captive Care of Bell’s Hingeback Tortoise, Kinixys belliana Client Handout from the: Journal of Herpetological Medicine and Surgery, Vol. 10, Iss.1, 2000 Introduction Bell’s hingeback tortoise, Kinixys belliana, is one of the most common tortoise species seen in the pet trade. Unfortunately, the vast majority of specimens offered for sale are imported, wild caught animals that have proven difficult to establish in captivity. It is a moderately large African tortoise, with adults measuring up to 22 centimeters and weighing up to 2 kilograms. Adult male specimens have a much longer tail than females. The preferred habitat of Bell’s hingeback is savanna and grassland. As these areas exhibit strong seasonal changes in precipitation and temperatures, the activity of the tortoises may be restricted to particular times of the year. In South Africa, for example, Bell’s hingeback may become inactive during the cool winter months of May through September. Such seasonal patterns are like important for successful captive breeding of the species. A tortoise that feels light or hollow is likely dehydrated and malnourished. Hingebacks may be very shy so patience and gentle handling is necessary to allow inspection of the head and limbs. -

As a result, there is a lack of published data regarding their population viability, habitat use, natural history and conservation needs. Until 2012, six Kinixys species were fully recognized. Following molecular phylogeny research, this has been elevated to eight species named Kinixys homeana, K. erosa, K. nogueyi, K. spekii, K. belliana, K. lobatsiana, K. natalensis and K. zombensis (Kindler et al. 2012). The latter includes two subspecies endemic to southeastern Africa named K. zombensis zombensis and K. z. domerguei. Over 75% of the genus was considered Not Evaluated (NE) or Data Deficient (DD) prior to a recent International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List assessment held in 2013 (Mallon et al. 2015). All species were ranked as Vulnerable, Endangered, or Critically Endangered. To date, no assessments of population health and status in the field have been conducted for most species of Kinixys. K. z. domerguei is endemic to Madagascar with its range currently limited to Nosy Faly, a small island off the northwest coast of mainland Madagascar and the adjacent Ambato Peninsula, with the total area of occupancy being previously thought to be as little as a few km2 (Kuchling 1986; Pedrono 2008). -

Box 449, Ngaparou, Mbour 33022, Senegal, West Africa [[email protected]] SUMMARY. – The Forest Hinge-back Tortoise, Kinixys erosa (Family Testudinidae), is a forest tortoise with considerable range over the continuous Guinea–Congo rainforest region in West and Central Africa. It is a medium-sized to large tortoise, with a carapace length reaching ca. 400 mm, and males larger than females. Tortoises of the genus Kinixys can close themselves entirely within their shells through a unique posterior carapacial hinge. Kinixys erosa inhabits the lowland evergreen forest, marshy areas, and forest galleries growing along rivers and streams, where it is locally threatened by clearance of forest for cultivation and hunting pressure. It has an omnivorous diet, with mushrooms being predominant. Population sizes are strongly depressed in areas where these tortoises are actively hunted by human populations. -

Nociception and Antinociception in the Speke’s Hingeback Tortoise (Kinixys spekii): Involvement of Cholinergic Mechanisms Joakim Dahlin Supervisors: Klas S.P. Abelson, Stanley N. Wambugu, Titus I. A collaboration between: The Department of Neuroscience, Biomedical Centre, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden The Department of Animal Physiology and Anatomy, University of Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya Abstract Tortoises are widely used as domestic animals and therefore their pain mechanisms have to be understood. They are also interesting to study from a comparative biology point of view. In the present study, a method called the suspended formalin test – a variant of the normal formalin test – has been developed to study the pain in these animals. This method makes it possible to understand the pain response and to test different analgesic drugs in tortoises. In contrary to the formalin test in other animals, the study suggests that tortoises do not show differentiable acute and inflammatory pain phases. The muscarinic acetylcholine receptor agonist oxotremorine is shown to have an analgesic effect in doses of 200 μg/(kg bw) and 100 μg/(kg bw) on tortoises, and the higher dose in combination with the antagonist atropine 2.5 mg/(kg bw) increases the pain threshold even further. The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist epibatidine did not affect the pain threshold in the doses studied, though it has an effect on the activity of the animal. The epibatidine also induces salivation, suggesting that it affects the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. In summary, the pain mechanisms in tortoises are different from mammals, and therefore the tortoises have to be treated with customized analgesic drugs when pain is imminent. -

A PUBLICATION OF THE TURTLE SURVIVAL ALLIANCE Turtle Survival 2015 RICK HUDSON FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK TSA’s Commitment to Zero Turtle Extinctions more than just a slogan Though an onerous task, this evaluation process is completely necessary if we are to systematically work through the many spe- cies that require conservation actions for their survival. Determining TSA’s role for each species is important for long-term planning and the budgeting process, and to help us identify areas around the globe where we need to develop new field programs. In Asia for example, Indonesia and Vietnam, with nine targeted species each, both emerged as high priority countries where we should be working. Concurrently, the Animal Management plan identified 32 species for man- agement at the Turtle Survival Center, and the associated space requirements imply a signifi- cant investment in new facilities. Both the Field Conservation and Animal Management Plans provide a blueprint for future growth for the TSA, and document our long-term commitment. Failure is not an option for us, and it will require a significant investment in capital and expansion if we are to make good on our mission. As if to test TSA’s resolve to make good on our commitment, on June 17 the turtle conser- vation community awoke to a nightmare when we learned of the confiscation of 3,800 Palawan Forest Turtles in the Philippines. We dropped everything and swung into action and for weeks to come, this crisis and the coordinated response dominated our agenda.
