Continuing Worship and Praise Among the Faith Communities who nimbly adjusted back to Alert Level 2 last weekend was the Southern Coastal Deanery, who had a combined service to celebrate the patronal festival of St Mary at St Mary’s Church, Mornington. The service was led by the Ven Jan Clark, with Rev’d John Graveston delivering the sermon. A planned celebratory lunch has been delayed, but the congregation took the move back to Level 2 in its stride: keeping well spaced out, using sanitiser and making sure everyone’s details were noted for contact tracing. Jan has been working on a variety of home-made face masks which were modelled for the congregation. The parish are gearing up to make more (including some creative versions) for different ages and face types. John Graveston spoke at the service about Mary - her faith and willingness to take on one of the most important roles of history - and the ways she has continued to inspire women and men in the Mornington Church to live sacrificial lives of service since 1883. One of the few quotes John used from St Mary's centennial history book in his sermon was the following: Out with the Sermon: The following proposal was put to the Church Committee in early 1886, but withdrawn after considerable discussion. “That with the view of rendering our Weekly Services more attractive we introduce a somewhat social element by discussing some religious subject instead of the sermon.” John said that he hoped his homily didn't drive the vestry to revisit this proposal...! Celebrating important feast days like this are a reminder that we have a fantastic heritage of Saints who have gone before - as well as all of our current saints - who show God’s love in old and new ways in very challenging and interesting times. Ensure you have Government COVID-19 Contact Tracing posters displayed and accessible for scanning (not too high up and with plenty of space around them) and you have contact tracing forms to note everyone who attends.
