Vacancies 31 July 2018 A regular update of Vacancies in the Diocese and further afield.

Dunedin Diocese Vacancy – Parish of Wakatipu

The Parish of Wakatipu – in the Queenstown area of the South Island and in the Diocese of Dunedin – is seeking a full time Vicar.

Based in one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand, the area attracts a lot of visitors – and is also home to a vibrant, welcoming and involved residential community. We see our next Vicar as someone who will both work with us and lead us into the future with God. The Parish is looking for the right person to grow the church, and engage with the local community.

With a capable and active Assistant Priest (NSM) and Lay Ministers support, we wish to develop our existing ministry and face the challenges of witnessing to Jesus Christ in New Zealand in 2018 and beyond.

We have committed ourselves to praying together for the right person, and will be expecting the next Vicar to be a person centred and dependent on the Holy Spirit.

Within the Diocese, The Bishop of Dunedin wants to appoint people who both practise and model prayer and reading of the Bible as they live out the risen life of Jesus Christ. Informal enquiries are welcome to Bishop Steven – Bishop of Dunedin.

The Parish profile is available on request to [email protected]

Please send Applications to [email protected] by 31 July 2018. There is a provisional interview date of 17 August 2018.

Diocese of Dunedin 150th - 2019 The second Bishop of Dunedin did not stay in post as long as Bishop Nevill, but was possibly less controversial.

According to Wikipedia, Isaac Richards was educated at Exeter College, Oxford and ordained in 1882. He was curate of St Paul's Truro then vicar of St Mark’s Remuera. In 1895 he became Warden of Selwyn College, Otago. Later he was Archdeacon of , a post he held for 11 years before being appointed Bishop of Dunedin from 1920 to 1934. He was also a cricketer, playing first class matches for Auckland in the 1890s. He died in 1936 in his 78th year.

At Synod this year we will be thinking about how we can celebrate the 150th birthday of our Diocese. Put your thinking caps on about how you may be able to contribute or assist.

Burning the candle at both ends? With the demise of the Catholic Shop in Dunedin, some parishes have been struggling to find a supplier of liturgical candles, but it has led to some creative recycling!

For when you run out of used candles to remake into new ones (!), National Candles now supply a range of beeswax candles for church settings. They are working on a new website, but have contact details if you need to check out your requirements: http://www.nationalcandles.co.nz/

This year’s theme ‘Overflow’ centres on how God fills us with His love, hope and power. It focuses on how our relationship with Jesus causes us to overflow with who He is, so that our local communities are impacted by the Gospel. The key verse we are exploring is ‘The mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart’ (Luke 6:45).

Our speakers are really going to bring it this year! We have Merrilyn Withers, an absolute legend in youth ministry, who has a special gift in helping youth workers to minister from a place of health, and Dion Fasi, a well-respected youth pastor, who offers practical tools for outworking The Great Commission in local settings. We also have Hope and Eugene Fuimaono, leading us in an incredible time of worship. This is undoubtedly going to be a weekend of encouragement and equipping. Find out more about our speakers here.

We really look forward to seeing you there!

A prayer for our Diocese

O Lord, who has not stopped forming us since the hour of our beginning;

Who has come among us to save us from ourselves and to teach us to love;

Who dwells beside us and within us and below us and above us,

Give us the grace to think again. May we know the joy of true discipleship;

May our relationships with you and with each other be real and deep;

May we have the courage to give our best for the least. In the name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.
