John Adams High School – Class of ’66 50th Reunion July 29/30, 2016

Aaron, Roy – I have taught at a prison for the last 25 years.

Baker, Nancy (Swanson) – I met my husband of 46 years in Hawaii while attending the University of Hawaii. I graduated, we married, and had our two sons there. We moved back to the mainland to Washington state (my husband’s home state) in 1976. We both retired from the school district in 2013 and are enjoying life and family. We have our two sons, daughters-in-law, and four grandsons. Looking forward to my first class reunion!

Berke, Dayle – Three years ago, I retired from a long career as a consumer protection attorney, health care lobbyist, and public speaker. I have travelled the globe with my husband, from Easter Island to Tanzania. I am now head of the docent corps at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. I was recently discovered by a fashion photographer on the streets of New York, am now doing photo shoots, and will appear in a book on wearable art in 2017.

Berman, Steve – As the sunset years near, I do, in fact, think back upon the four wonderful years I spent at John Adams. Fifty years is a long time but I continue to have fond memories of friends, teachers, athletic teams, and especially the school newspaper, The Tower. Being editor of The Tower provided me with a skill set in writing and grammar that is difficult to replicate today. – Upon graduating John Adams, I spent a year at Northwestern University and then transferred to Tulane University in New Orleans. My junior year in college was spent at Glasgow University, Glasgow, Scotland, and I continue to keep in touch with the friends I met in Great Britain. I obtained a Master’s Degree in 1972, Summa Cum Laude from Tulane University, and I was President of my class. – Subsequently, I became a CPA, first with Arthur Andersen & Company, then Laventhol & Horwath, and then my own firm, Stephen M. Berman & Associates, LLC. As a private firm, we opened our doors on October 1, 1977 and I continue to practice today. I love what I do and have been fortunate to have great clients, including the current Mayor of Atlanta and the Howard Hughes Estate. – Besides three children, seven grandchildren, and a wife of 41 years, my time “away from the office” has been spent in community service. My avocation is elder care and I have spent over 40 years volunteering at a skilled care nursing facility. During my Presidency, 1994 to 2000, we built an $18 million dollar new structure in Atlanta, Georgia. We just completed a $25 million dollar assisted living and memory care facility, also in Atlanta. – I often remark that I have been blessed to have great mentors who guided me in both philanthropy and service. – While I have lost contact with almost everyone in my 1966 graduating class, it’s great to come back and see old friends. I’m also extremely appreciative of those individuals who planned this event. No doubt none of us will be here for the 100th anniversary so my motto has always been: “Make every minute count. Do ‘good’ and you’ll be blessed as God put us on this earth to make a difference.”

Biggs, Linda (Lange) – My two sons and four grandchildren, as well as my sisters, brought me back to South Bend/Mishawaka. I have lived in Carlsbad/Vista, CA and southeast Houston, TX. Worked 12 years for Hughes Aircraft Company (GM) until they closed the Carlsbad plant. Started my employment at the four days after I moved to South Bend from TX. Retired from ND in 2014 after 17 years of employment. After planning our high school reunions and my family reunions for over 10 years, I wrote and published a book titled Guidebook for Planning Reunions. I documented most of my experiences for organizing and planning large and small reunions. I started college in CA, working full-time and attending night classes towards a B.A. Degree in Business. I finished my B.A. in Organizational Management at Bethel College-Mishawaka in 2006. Slowly adapting to retirement! 

I have traveled to many places in the world, the most recent being Cuba. I am now retired and enjoy 8 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter, traveling with my wonderful husband, and volunteering at a women’s shelter and the Blue Ridge Community College, where I work with students preparing to take the U.S. citizenship exam.

Cole, Delana (Lynch) – My biggest accomplishments are my wonderful husband and our marriage. Also, our two beautiful, successful children. Mike and I have been very fortunate to have been able to travel extensively. Life has been good!

Collins, Chris (Sheets) – Married to Dave for 46 years. We recently relocated to Cicero, IN (Indianapolis area) to be closer to family. We live on Morse Lake and are enjoying the lake activities and the Cicero community. The various jobs in my career were all education related. We have two sons and two grandchildren and love living closer to them.

Downs, Michael – I attended Indiana University, Bloomington, graduating in 1970 while Carol and I were married in 1969. With the Vietnam War going on at the time, I enlisted in the Navy spending a total of six years in that branch of the service, being based in Japan for nearly five years. In 1976 I returned to Indiana University earning a Master’s Degree with post graduate work in several areas of United States History and reading education. Over the next 30 years I taught at a number of schools in the South Bend Community School Corporation, including John Adams, and as an adjunct at Indiana University, South Bend. During that time I was recognized as Middle School Teacher of the Year by the S.B.C.S.C., and U.S. History Teacher of the Year in 2008 by the Indiana Daughters of the American Revolution. Also during this time I wrote a book about Colonel Alfred Wade, a Civil War soldier from South Bend. I returned to Japan in 1988 to teach in a middle school located in Takamatsu during the summer. I retired in 2008, and Carol and I moved to Knoxville, Tennessee mainly to get away from the harsh northern Indiana winters. I am currently very active in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, which is an organization dedicated to the preservation of the memory and memorials of that conflict. While active in the Sons, I helped plan and organize a program that honored the first Hoosier to be killed in that war, South Bend native Private John Auten, while additionally cleaning and replacing numerous veterans’ head stones. I am currently serving as the Tennessee Department Commander for the SUVCW, where I recently took part in a program to honor the nearly 1,800 Union soldiers who perished in the 1865 Sultana steamboat disaster. Additionally, I have built an extensive

stamp collection over the years, and I am active in the Knoxville Philatelic Society. Carol and I make frequent trips to Civil War battlefields and to the Smokies just to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. We are enjoying our retirement years sharing our condo with three cats: two Maine Coons and a Scottish Fold. If you are in the area please look us up. We would be happy to show you around.

We live right on the NC coast. • College graduation (Ball State, ’70) • Being named 1999 planner of the year in the Wilmington, NC area • Being elected North Carolina Lions 2nd Vice District Governor for the 2016-17 club year. Will be District Governor in the 2018-19 club year, overseeing 64 Lions Clubs in east central North Carolina • Retirement!

Farian, Janice – The highlight of my high school career was getting a 100% on one of Mr. Przybysz’s quizzes! Graduated from IU in Bloomington in 1969 with a BA in Psychology. I then attended Fordham University at Lincoln Center in NYC, receiving a master’s in Social Service in 1972. Moved to PA where I was Planning Director for Beaver County’s United Way. Moved to Florida in 1978 and got a “temporary” job at a bank in Tampa. Liked it and stayed. After several years became a Supervisor and then a Department Manager, was transferred to Jacksonville where I still am. After several bank buyouts and mergers I was merged into retirement in 2003. Tried real estate but then went back into banking at Citi Bank. In 2011 was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer which had gone into the lining of my lung. Was able to work through chemo for a while but had to go out on disability in 2013. Still getting palliative treatment.

Finneran, Barbara (Simon) – The joys of my life are the people in my life! I’m married to a wonderful man, Earl Simon, an Air Force Vietnam Vet. We have 2 sons. One is married, and we have 2 fun-loving little grandsons, 8½ and 4, who have given us so much joy and fun!! Travels include Australia and New Zealand, and we plan to maybe see Ireland in the future! Favorite teachers: Mr. Goldsberry, who taught about real life, and Mrs. Valentine, both very caring. Proud of Adams for the School Spirit! Latest fun and challenge: Modern Western Square Dancing! We’ve met many nice and “down to earth” people!

Gilbert, Meg (Margaret Fleming) – The longer I lived, the more I appreciated the great education we had at JAHS. Besides the math or English skills we learned, I found myself quoting advice for living life from more than one teacher. One such “piece of wisdom” cane from Mr. Goldsberry in Sociology class. He said, “Experience as many different things in life as you can. You may not want to repeat

some of them, but you will have the experience at least once.” Those words have guided me for the last 50 years.

Gonter, Stephen – Returned to South Bend in 1976 not sure what I wanted to do next, found a job, met a woman, got married, bought a house, had a kid, and watched in astonishment as 40 years flew by.

Grenert, Kristy (Baynton) – I’ve learned that no matter what the obstacle, you can face it with determination and overcome it. Each day is a new day to learn something you didn’t know the day before. Family is #1.

I still work today as an advisor in the Department of Defense. – My wife and I met in England not long after I’d completed my tour in Viet Nam. We’ve been married now for 44 years and are the proud parents of two wonderful children. Our son, recently retired from the service, is back in university working on a second bachelor’s degree, this one in professional mathematics, which he will use to teach at the high school level as part of the “Troops to Teachers” program. Our daughter and her husband have given us two wonderful grandchildren. With both boys going to school full time now, she too is returning to school pursuing a Masters in Psychology. – My family and I have lived all over the world with the most time spent in England (10 years), Belgium (4 years) and Australia (3 years). The longest we’ve managed to stay in one place is our current home in Virginia (24 years) but the need to move once again has hit us and we’ll be relocating to a larger farm in Colorado in the fall of 2017. – During our time in Australia my wife and I both purchased our first Harley-Davidsons and have been heavily involved in touring the countryside on them. In Australia we rode them from Canberra to Perth and back along the Great Ocean Road. We brought them back to the States with us and continued our cross-country travels with trips from Virginia to California via the southern states and returning through the central states. We’ve toured the length of what remains of Route 66 and have ridden the back roads of New England and the Canadian Maritimes. Our next big trip will be to our retirement home. – Over the years I’ve developed interests in stained glass windows, beekeeping, raising chickens and beef, cultivating acres of wildflowers and competitive sport shooting.

Kluszczynski, Shirley (Holloway) – Four children (2 girls and 2 boys), 4 grandchildren. Taught at Holy Cross in South Bend for 25 years. Part time now at St. Anthony’s, Title One. Love gardening and cooking. Nutrition and health are super important.

Luke, Cynthia (Martin) – Married to Edward Martin (deceased), 2 daughters, Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in French, French teacher, frequent trips to France, love music, gardening, and cooking.

Martin, Beckey (Thompson) – I’m one of those boring people who decided in the 9th grade what I wanted to do with my life, and that’s what I’ve done. I joined Future Teachers of American (FTA) my freshman year, and after receiving a Bachelor’s and a Master’s in education, things went on to be more interesting. I have been blessed to teach elementary, preschool, and a teen job training program, and as an adjunct, I taught Early Childhood Education at two colleges. In the early ‘90s, WNIT Television chose me to be their first Education Projects Coordinator, so I got to represent Sesame Street and Mister Rogers Neighborhood by giving local workshops for Early Childhood Professionals. Mister Rogers had a profound influence on me at that time, so I started a once-a-week preschool class called the Little Neighbors Club at two area homeless shelters. It caught the attention of the producers of his television show, and I was asked to speak about it at a national PBS convention, where Fred Rogers himself was the keynote speaker. So I was honored to meet this amazing man in person! In later years I taught adults who were earning their CDA (Child Development Associate) Credential. Now I serve as Teacher & Family Support at a local Early Learning Center. There’s just something about very young children that helps us see the beauty and the wonder in everyday life! As much as I’ve enjoyed traveling to many great places around the world and in America, there’s no place like home. It’s great that many of our classmates have found happiness in other locations. But for me, even though St. Joseph County, Indiana may not be the most beautiful or exotic place in the world (far from it), it has been the perfect place for me to grow up, raise my children, and enjoy my grandchildren. They are, along with my faith, the cornerstones of my life, and I consider myself to be one of the most blessed people on the face of the earth.

Minx, Jan (Jock) – Our 4 sons and our 3 grandsons have given us untold joy. Their accomplishments are ours!!!

In 2003 I left to begin my own consulting practice, where I have done security training, threat and vulnerability analysis and expert witness work. I have now retired. – In 1997 I reduced my work schedule to 80% time, and since then I

have spent one day each week as a volunteer construction crew leader with DC Habitat for Humanity. I have participated in the construction of over 120 houses for low income DC residents. We put almost 1,000 miles on our bicycles on the south island of New Zealand and the state of Victoria in Australia. – I have been hoping to attend this reunion to reconnect with people I have not seen in 50 years. Unfortunately, the date conflicts with another event that cannot be moved. Best wishes.

Our loveable dog, Coco, rounds out our family! – After attending Miami University, I graduated from Indiana University’s School of Accounting, one of only ten women in the class of 1970. After graduation, I moved to Atlanta, GA to work for Haskin & Sells, now Deloitte. But Atlanta is no South Bend, so I moved back home after one year. In South Bend, I worked for McGladrey – now RSM US – in their tax department. In 1981, Jay and I started Armored Services together, where I was the accountant. We retired in 2000 and moved to Scottsdale, Arizona to be near Jay’s family (and to get away from the snow). I took up golf, canasta, and mah jong. Pat Lindley The Patricia Lindley Center for the Performing Arts opened in 2016 Deceased 9/11//2010 as a testament to the tremendous impact she had on the arts and on her entire community. Just 50 minutes from downtown Cleveland, the Center is a 600-seat state-of-the-art professional performance venue. Knowing Pat’s humility, she would probably be surprised to see her name on such an impressive structure. For many years, she quietly gave of her time and energy for the benefit of others (community groups, children, families, the homeless), never expecting anything in return. With her exceptional academic abilities, her amazing memory, and her sharp wit and humor, she could have done pretty much anything she set her mind to, anywhere in the world. But she chose the small town of Wellington, Ohio as the place where she would settle down and shine brightly. That’s where she met the love of her life, and they married when she was 50 years old. Pat’s spirit will live on in all of us who were privileged to call her our friend! (Written by Beckey Martin Thompson.)
