Price1 and Daniel K. Young1 ABSTRACT The first comprehensive survey of Wisconsin Endomychidae was initiated in 1998. Throughout Wisconsin sampling sites were selected based on habitat type and sampling history. Wisconsin endomychids were hand collected from fungi and under tree bark; successful trapping methods included cantharidin- baited pitfall traps, flight intercept traps, and Lindgren funnel traps. Examina- tion of literature records, museum and private collections, and field research yielded 10 species, three of which are new state records. Two dubious records, Epipocus unicolor Horn and Stenotarsus hispidus (Herbst), could not be con- firmed. -

In forest ecosystems, disturbances that cause tree mortality create canopy gaps, increase growth of understory vegetation, and alter the abiotic environment. These impacts may have interacting effects on populations of ground-dwelling invertebrates that regulate ecological processes such as decom- position and nutrient cycling. A manipulative experiment was designed to decouple effects of simultane- ous disturbances to the forest canopy and ground-level vegetation to understand their individual and combined impacts on ground-dwelling invertebrate communities. We quantified invertebrate abundance, richness, diversity, and community composition via pitfall traps in response to a factorial combination of two disturbance treatments: canopy gap formation via girdling and understory vegetation removal. For- mation of gaps was the primary driver of changes in invertebrate community structure, increasing activity- abundance and taxonomic richness, while understory removal had smaller effects. -

Carabidae) des Truppenübungsplatzes Haltern-Borkenberge (Kreise Coesfeld und Recklinghausen) - Eine vorläufige Übersicht - Heinrich Terlutter, Münster, Armin Rose, Wilhelmshaven, Klaas Reißmann, Kamp-Lintfort und Karsten Hannig, Waltrop Zusammenfassung Die Käferfauna (exkl. Laufkäfer) des Truppenübungsplatzes Haltern-Borkenberge (Krei- se Coesfeld und Recklinghausen) wurde von Juni 2001 bis Dezember 2007 mittels Bo- denfallen und durch ergänzende Handaufsammlungen erfasst. Durch diese Erfassung so- wie unter Berücksichtigung unpublizierter älterer Untersuchungen konnten insgesamt 510 Käferarten aus 57 Familien ermittelt werden. Der Anteil der Staphylinidae an der Gesamtartenzahl beträgt 42 %, gefolgt von den Dytiscidae mit 7 %. Trichohydnobius suturalis und Leiodes ciliaris werden erstmals für Nordrhein-Westfalen gemeldet, die Nachweise von Necrophorus vestigator und Leiodes rubiginosa stellen Wiederfunde für Westfalen nach über 40 Jahren dar. Die bisher festgestellten Arten dürften bedingt durch das eingeschränkte Methodenspektrum schätzungsweise 50-60 % der tatsächlichen Artenzahl darstellen. Large grazing herbivores drive the ecology of the site and can have a profound impact on invertebrates, both positive and negative. This survey was commissioned in order to assess the site’s invertebrate assemblage in a standardised and repeatable way both internally between fields and sections and temporally between years. Young Department of Entomology 445 Russell Labs University of Wisconsin-Madison Madison, WI 53706 Abstract: A survey of Wisconsin Nitidulidae and Kateretidae yielded 78 species through analysis of literature records, museum and private collections, and three years of field research (2000-2002). Twenty-seven species (35% of the Wisconsin fauna) represent new state records, having never been previously recorded from the state. Wisconsin distribution, along with relevant collecting techniques and natural history information, are summarized. The Wisconsin nitidulid and kateretid faunae are compared to reconstructed and updated faunal lists for Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and south-central Canada. -

Sílvia Pineda-Munoz, MSc MQID: 42622409 iii iv Diet, ecology, and dental morphology in terrestrial mammals – Silvia Pineda-Munoz – November 2015 ABSTRACT Dietary inferences are a key foundation for paleoecological, ecomorphological and macroevolutionary studies because they inform us about the direct relationships between the components of an ecosystem. Thus, the first part of my thesis involved creating a statistically based diet classification based on a literature compilation of stomach content data for 139 terrestrial mammals. I observed that diet is far more complex than a traditional herbivore-omnivore-carnivore classification, which masks important feeding specializations. To solve this problem I proposed a new classification scheme that emphasizes the primary resource in a given diet (Chapter 3). -

Clinic update page 2 Below is the fruit insect report from the past two weeks: Berry Crops: Picnic/sap beetles Reports suggest that Japanese beetle pressure is finally starting to taper off for the page 2 year. This insect has been particularly destructive in the southern two thirds of the Spotted wing drosophila update state this year and growers should continue to monitor for additional beetles if high page 3 numbers have been observed the past few weeks. Cranberries: Cranberry degree-day map and Fall webworms have been popping up throughout the state the past few weeks. The update silken tents are quite obvious in southern portions of the state. Farther north, page 7 caterpillars are small, so thorough scouting can help prevent issues before significant damage occurs. Grapes: Wine and table grape developmental stages Several samples of apples with codling moth caterpillar damage have recently come page 8 in to the UW Insect Diagnostic Lab. These have typically been from backyard growers that had not been using monitoring traps for this pest. Tree Fruits: Silver leaf of apple Many stink bug samples have come into the page 12 UW Insect Diagnostic Lab recently. Nymphs Reduced risk insecticide: Venerate (juveniles) of the green stink bug have been page 14 spotted in southern Wisconsin for several Apple maturity index report weeks. -

Volume 52 Number 03 April 27, 2007 Weather and Pests Despite some rainy weather, spring planting and tillage activities have accelerated considerably. Farmers are busy planting corn, oats, peas, potatoes and early sweet corn. Successive days of sunshine and above-average temperatures followed by a day or two of rainfall have transformed rural southern Wisconsin landscapes into rolling green fields of alfalfa and winter grains. Average high temperatures ranged from the mid-50s to low 70s, while average low temperatures ranged from the mid-30s to 40 degrees. Alfalfa acreage has shown very little winter damage after the unseasonably cold weather earlier this month. Pest insect activity has been minimal so far this season, with the most noteworthy events occurring in apple orchards and alfalfa fields.
