Gleaned from your manuscript entitled A Search for Solomon, ¨As is so often the way with quests, whether they be for fish or buried cities or mountain peaks or even for money or any other goal that one sets himself in life, the rewards are usually incidental to the journeying rather than in the end itself…I have come to enjoy the journeying.” I consider this project as a quest of discovery, rediscovery, and delightful unexpected turns. I would like mention one of Jerome’s six sons, my grandfather, Charles Rollin Head, a farmer by trade and an intellectual at heart. Ricardo Flores Magón and the Transnational Anarchists in Los Angeles, 1900-1922 Sergio Maldonado In the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution, many people such as Ricardo Flores Magón and the residents of Los Angeles found themselves in a perpetual state of exploitation by either the Mexican or U.S. governments. Mexicans found solidarity together, mounting resistance against insurmountable odds. Even under the direst of circumstances, their efforts in the early twentieth- century would propel Mexican-Americans’ identity into an epoch of self-realization that is uniquely transnational. For many Mexican-Americans in this period, Ricardo Flores Magón was their inspiration. In 1917 Flores Magón gave a speech in front of a group of Mexicans from the California cities of El Monte and La Puente, commemorating the manifesto of El Partido Liberal Mexicano. After years of struggle against the Mexican dictatorship, he explained to his comrades that they must leave behind the clasping of hands and anxiously asking ourselves what will be effective in resisting the assault of governmental tyranny and capitalist exploitation. The remedy is in our hands: that all who suffer the same evils unite, certain that before our solidity the abuses of those who base their strength in our separations and indifference will crumble. 1 This and similar calls for unity by Flores Magón and the many Mexicans residing in and around Los Angeles who flocked to listen to him together fostered the growth of Chicano nationalism. Flores Magón was a renowned anarchist intellectual of the Mexican Revolution. Many scholars have regarded him as an important figure in Chicano history and view him as a fundamental figure of Chicano nationalism due to his rebellious actions in Mexico and the United States. -

Valenzuela, Arizona State University In relation to Chicano cinema, film director Lourdes Portillo has broken with traditional works filmed mostly by men and has developed instead a new female perspective—one that is internationalist and questions male hegemony. In the near past, traditional cinema never gave Chicanas the roles they deserved. This was in part because Chicano filmmakers pro - duced works that centered on the 1960s Chicano Power Movement. These Chicano male films used “forms of cultural production resolutely connected to the social and political activism of the Chicano Movement. -

Course Syllabus | ETHN 143 | Fall 2017 | Hidalgo UC San Diego ETHN 143: Chicana/o Film and Media Studies Fall 2017 | Dr. Melissa Hidalgo TuTh 5.00-6.20pm | WLH 2114 Dear Students, Welcome to this section of ETHN 143, “Chicana/o Film and Media Studies.” My name is Melissa Hidalgo—you can call me “Profe Hidalgo” or “Dr. Hidalgo”—and I’m your instructor. I’m happy to be bacK here at UCSD teaching in Ethnic Studies. What follows is the Course Syllabus. The bullet points below contain the classroom procedures, policies, and other important ‘ground rules’ for our class. I linKed important University policies and procedures in our TritonEd pages. Please review those pages, particularly the parts about cheating (don’t do it!), student conduct, and campus emergencies. § First things first. This course is an historical survey of Chicana and Chicano media from the Chicano/a Movimiento Era (1960s) to the present. We will examine films, television, and other media forms made “by, for, and about” Chicanas/os to learn about Chicana/o history, politics, and culture in the US and in relation to other US Latina/o groups. Texts include classics such as Born in East L.A. (1987) and La Bamba (1987)—both films will celebrate their 30th anniversary this year—and more recent fan favorites liKe Selena (1997) and the OWN (Oprah Winfrey NetworK) cable television series Queen Sugar (2016-). These and other examples of Chicana/o film and media will form the core of our studies in this course. Our overall object is to consider historical, economic, social, political, cultural, and educational factors affecting Chicana/o and Latina/o access to and participation in the film industry, as well as their representations on-screen, over the past five decades. -

Content Introduction Chicano Cinema is designed to provide students with an overview of Chicano cinema history and the skills necessary to analyze and critique cinema. Students will learn about Chicano cinema theory, aesthetics, genres, and basic cinema criticism. Students will analyze cinema through an examination of story, directing, acting, scenes, and producing to allow students to view cinema critically, to develop a systematic and convincing interpretation of the films they watch, and to acquire the ability to analyze cinema in well-constructed and persuasive essays. Course Objective Chicano Cinema is designed to assist you in learning the aesthetic and technical fundamentals of Chicano cinema arts through lectures, readings, screenings, discussions and assignments. This class provides opportunities for you to develop your skills in writing about and discussing films through semiotics. Course Description Chicano Cinema is an examination of the American film industry with respect to the Chicano’s role, historically and culturally, in the genre. A series of films, including Hollywood commercial and Chicano made films, will be screened, as part of an analysis of Chicano images and their impact on American popular culture. -

La Secretaría de Cultura de Jalisco continúa con su programa Vive el Arte los martes, miércoles y jueves de la semana, días en los que la música, literatura, danza y teatro se hacen presentes en diferentes foros de la zona metropolitana de Guadalajara, para deleitar a los asistentes de todas las edades con diversas propuestas escénicas. El Joven Ballet de Jalisco inicia su temporada de Otoño con tres presentaciones en el Teatro Degollado con la coreografía Who cares?, que nos lleva por un recorrido por la ciudad de Nueva York; mientras que la Orquesta Filarmónica se presenta en el Encuentro Internacional del Mariachi y la Charrería, acompañando a importantes agrupaciones de este género musical, además de continuar con su tercera temporada 2014 ofreciendo los conciertos México en mi Corazón y Romanticismo Alemán. La música se hace presente con el Ciclo de Jazz Carlos de la Torre que tendrá como sede la Casa de la Cultura Jalisciense y que se desarrollará de septiembre a noviembre con la participación de destacados exponentes de este género. Tanto en la Zona Metropolitana de Guadalajara como en los municipios de Jalisco se han preparado una serie de actividades culturales que acompañarán los festejos del 204 aniversario del inicio de la Guerra de Independencia y el tradicional Grito de Independencia a cargo de autoridades estatales y municipales. Pero la actividad cultura no se limita a estos eventos, en septiembre en todo el estado se pueden disfrutar diversas actividades culturales de teatro, danza, cine, literatura, artes plásticas, entre otras disciplinas para chicos y grandes. -

Abstract (Dis)Claiming Mestizofilia: Chicana/os Disarticulating Euromestizaje by Agustín Palacios Doctor of Philosophy in Ethnic Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Laura E. Pérez, Chair This dissertation investigates the development and contradictions of the discourse of mestizaje in its key Mexican ideologues and its revision by Mexican American or Chicana/o intellectuals. Great attention is given to tracing Mexico’s dominant conceptions of racial mixing, from Spanish colonization to Mexico’s post-Revolutionary period. Although mestizaje continues to be a constant point of reference in U.S. Latino/a discourse, not enough attention has been given to how this ideology has been complicit with white supremacy and the exclusion of indigenous people. Mestizofilia, the dominant mestizaje ideology formulated by white and mestizo elites after Mexico’s independence, proposed that racial mixing could be used as a way to “whiten” and homogenize the Mexican population, two characteristics deemed necessary for the creation of a strong national identity conducive to national progress. Mexican intellectuals like Vicente Riva Palacio, Andrés Molina Enríquez, José Vasconcelos and Manuel Gamio proposed the remaking of the Mexican population through state sponsored European immigration, racial mixing for indigenous people, and the implementation of public education as a way to assimilate the population into European culture. -
