46 HALL OF FAMER MINDY (SUTTER) NIELSEN

MINDY (SUTTER) NIELSEN Former Fighting Sioux softball standout Mindy (Sutter) Nielsen is among the 2006-07 class of inductees into UND’s Athletic Hall of Fame, where she joins former standout Connie (Gebhardt) Courtney and former coach Patricia Warcup as the only members of the Sioux softball program to be enshrined.

Nielsen’s lone season of softball came during her freshman year of 1986. She started all 30 games at first base for UND, making just one error (.989 fielding percentage) and winning the team’s best defensive player award. At the plate she ranked third on the team with a .255 average in a team-high 106 at-bats, while finishing tied for second on the squad with 11 runs batted in.

Nielsen left softball after that one season to concentrate full-time on her volleyball career, and would go on to establish herself as one of the finest players in the history of UND volleyball. A four- year starter, Nielsen graduated as the school’s all-time leader in kills (1,450) and remains the program’s all-time leader in career games played (534), service aces (256) and digs (1,594). She ranks second all-time in kills, total blocks (463), solo blocks (129) and block assists (129).

Nielsen’s 95 service aces in 1987 remain a UND single-season record. 2006 UND Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Mindy (Sutter) Nielsen A two-time All-North Central Conference selection (1987, 1988), Nielsen was twice named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Region Team (1986, 1988) and was named to the Collegiate Volleyball Coaches All-Region Team in 1986.

Equally successful off the court, Nielsen was an academic all-dis- trict selection in 1988 and was twice named to the Academic All- NCC squad (1986, 1988). Nielsen carried a cumulative 3.83 grade point average as an elementary education/physical education major.

In 1987 Nielsen, a native of Moorhead, Minn., was named the recipient of UND’s Grace Rhonemus Female Athlete of the Year award.

Nielsen’s fellow 2006-07 UND Athletic Hall of Fame inductees include Ed Belfour (1986-87, Hockey), Steve Burian (1987-90 Track & Field), Alan Hangsleben (1971-74, Hockey), Tony Hrkac (1984-85, 1986-87, Hockey) and the 1981-82 hockey team.
