Michael Ackland holds the inaugural Colin and Margaret Roderick Chair of English at James Cook University, Townsville. He is currently researching a monograph on Christina Stead and her socialist heritage.

Bruce Bennett is Emeritus Professor of English at the Australian Defence Force Academy, University of New South Wales. His books include Homing In (2006), Australian Short Fiction: A History (2002), The Oxford Literary History of Australia (1998) and Spirit in Exile (1991). Current research interests include literature and espionage and expatriate Australian writers.

Nicholas Birns is Associate Teaching Professor at Eugene Lang College, The New School, New York. Theory after Theory: An Intellectual History of Literary Theory from 1950 to the Early 21st Century appeared in 2010, and his single-authored Wiley-Blackwell Encyclopedia of Critics and Criticism will be published in 2011.

Patrick Buckridge is Professor of Literary Studies in the School of Humanities, Griffith University, where he teaches courses on world lit- erature. He has published widely on Australian literary history and the history of reading, and is currently working on a study of Australian reading culture during the interwar period, and a history of the publish- ing house of Harrap.

Lawrence Buell is the Powell M. Cabot Professor of American Lit- erature at Harvard University. His recent publications include Writing for an Endangered World: Literature, Culture, and Environment in the United States and Beyond (2001), Emerson (2003), and The Future of viii • Reading Across the Pacific

Environmental Criticism (2005). In 2007 he won the Jay Hubbell Award, Modern Language Association, American Literature Group, for lifetime contributions to American literary studies.

David Carter is Professor of and Cultural History at the University of Queensland. He has recently co-edited Modern Australian Criticism and Theory (with Wang Guanglin, 2010) and con- tributed to the Cambridge History of Australian Literature (2009). He is researching a history of American editions of Australian books.

Robert Dixon is Professor of Australian Literature at the Uni- versity of . His most recent book, with Katherine Bode, is Resourceful Reading: The New Empiricism, eResearch and Australian Literature Culture (2009). In 2011, his two books on Frank Hurley will be published by Anthem Press, London: ‘The Diaries of Frank Hurley 1912–1944’ (edited with Christopher Lee) and ‘Photography, Early Cinema and Colonial Modernity: Frank Hurley’s Synchronized Lecture Entertainments’.

Paul Genoni teaches in the School of Media, Culture and Creative Arts at Curtin University. He is the author of Subverting the Empire: Explor- ers and Exploration in Australian Fiction (2004), and co-editor of Thea Astley’s Fictional Worlds (2006). He is currently President of the Asso- ciation for the Study of Australian Literature.

Paul Giles is Challis Professor of English at the . His most recent books are Transnationalism in Practice: Essays on American Studies, Literature and Religion (2010) and The Global Remap- ping of American Literature (2011). He is currently chief investigator of an ARC Discovery project entitled ‘Antipodean America: Australasia, Colonialism, and the Constitution of U.S. Literature.’

Kevin Hart holds the Edwin B. Kyle Chair of Christian Studies in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia. He also holds professorships in the Department of English and the Department of French. He has recently accepted a visiting Chair of Philosophy at the Australian Catholic University, where he will teach in the Australian Contributors • ix winter for the next five years. His most recent books are The Exorbitant: Emmanuel Levinas between Jews and Christians (2010) and Clandestine Companions: Philosophy in the Narratives of Maurice Blanchot (2010).

Carol Hetherington is currently employed as Content Manager of the database AustLit: The Australian Literature Resource and as an editorial assistant for Australian Literary Studies. She has worked for many years as a research assistant and bibliographer with the English Department at the University of Queensland, and as a librarian in the Fryer Library of Australian Literature, the University of Queensland. Her research interests include bibliography and book history, the crime fiction of Arthur Upfield and the American publication of Australian literature.

Ivor Indyk holds the Whitlam Chair in Writing and Society at the Uni- versity of Western Sydney. He is the founding editor of HEAT magazine and publisher of the Giramondo book imprint. A critic, essayist and reviewer, he has written a monograph on , and essays on many aspects of Australian literature.

Deborah Jordan is a Research Fellow in the School of English, Media Studies and Art History at the University of Queensland. She is a cul- tural historian currently working on the University of Queensland Press archive, on the ‘Australian Literary Publishing and its Economies 1965– 95’ research project with Ivor Indyk and others, and with David Carter on American editions of Australian books. She is particularly interested in the ways nation intersects with nature and the narratives of change.

Paul Kane is Professor of English and Environmental Studies at Vassar College. He is poetry editor of Antipodes and the author of Australian Poetry: Romanticism and Negativity (1996). His most recent collection of poems is A Slant of Light (2008).

Marilyn Lake is Professor of History at La Trobe University and Presi- dent of the Australian Historical Association. Her most recent book is Drawing the Global Colour Line: White Men’s Countries and the Question of Racial Equality, which was co-authored with Henry Reynolds and x • Reading Across the Pacific which won the Prime Minister’s Prize for Non-Fiction, the Ernest Scott Prize and the Queensland Premier’s Prize for History.

Kerry Leves is completing a PhD thesis on Randolph Stow at the Uni- versity of Sydney. His most recent poetry collection, A Shrine to Lata Mangeshkar (2008), was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Kenneth Slessor Award in 2009. His poetry reviews and critical articles have appeared in Australian Book Review, Blue Dog, Boxkite, Five Bells, Over- land and Southerly.

Benjamin Miller recently completed his PhD at the University of New South Wales. He has published on representations of Aboriginality in Australian literature and cinema in the Journal of the Association for the Study of Australian Literature, Studies in Australasian Cinema, and Altitude.

Fiona Morrison is a Lecturer in English at the University of Sydney. Her latest book is a critical edition of Dorothy Hewett’s selected prose. She is also the co-author of Masters in Pieces (Cambridge University Press, 2006).

Roger Osborne has a research background in print culture, book history and scholarly editing. He has published a number of articles on these topics in Australian and British contexts and he is co-editor of the Cambridge Edition of Joseph Conrad’s Under Western Eyes (forthcom- ing in 2012). He is currently Project Manager of the Aus-e-Lit Project.

Louise Poland is the recipient of an ARC postdoctoral fellowship as part of an ARC-funded project on ‘Australian Literary Publishing and its Economies 1965–95’, led by the University of Western Sydney. She has worked in book publishing and her research has focused on the publishing industry. Her doctoral thesis, awarded by Monash Univer- sity, examined feminist presses and publishing politics in Australia.

John Scheckter is Professor of English at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, New York. He is a founding member and past president of the American Association of Australasian Literary Studies. Contributors • xi

He is the author of The Australian Novel 1830–1980 (1998), and is cur- rently investigating early modern imperialism.

Ken Stewart is an Honorary Research Associate of the School of Letters, Art and Media at the University of Sydney. He has been closely associated since the 1960s with the development of Australian literature as a subject for university teaching and research, and in 1978 co-founded the Association for the Study of Australian Literature (ASAL). He is the author of Investigations in Australian Literature (2000), and was in 2009 the recipient of a Festschrift, Serious Frolic (ed. F. de Groen and P. Kirkpatrick). His most recent book, edited with Laurie Hergenhan and Michael Wilding, is Cyril Hopkins’ Marcus Clarke (2009).

Elizabeth Webby is Emeritus Professor of Australian Literature, University of Sydney. She has published widely on nineteenth-century Australian literary culture and is currently working on critical editions of Henry Lawson, Charles Harpur and Patrick White’s notebooks
