Catholics and 4th of July —Did you know???

When celebrating Independence Day, take a moment to remember Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737–1832). Though not typically mentioned as a founding father, he might as well have been, given his outstanding contributions.

So how many of the following do you know about this pioneering political ?

1. He was the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence. 2. In fact, he was the last surviving signer of the Declaration. 3. Perhaps obviously, he also served on the Second Continental Congress. 4. He was asked to accompany Benjamin Franklin on his diplomatic mission to Canada. 5. During this journey he kept a journal, which is still studied by scholars today. 6. His cousin, Fr. John Carroll, also went on that trip. 7. That same cousin would become America’s first Catholic . 8. He’s referred to as Charles Carroll of Carrollton to distinguish him from his father, Charles Carroll of Annapolis (1702 – 1782), one of the richest people in Maryland and a well-known Catholic. 9. He was educated at the second school opened by the Jesuits in the colonies. 10. One scholar says that Carroll was “perhaps the single most influential person in persuading Maryland to support the cause of independence.” 11. His grandfather Charles Carroll the Settler (1661 – 1720) owned nearly 48,000 acres in Maryland and was, according to one writer, “the most influential and visible Catholic in the colony.” 12. He was the first United States Senator for Maryland (1789 – 1792). 13. In that capacity, he tried to end slavery in Maryland. 14. Carroll read widely and even dangerously, so to speak. He was, writes one scholar, “especially fond of Montesquieu and Voltaire, both of whose works had been placed on the Index of Forbidden Books.” 15. His wife gave birth to seven children. 16. He wrote a letter to George Washington volunteering his only son for military service. 17. For putting his vast wealth on the line in the service of American freedom as a politician, Charles Carroll of Carrollton is widely recognized as an upstanding Catholic revolutionary.

Dear God, Thank you for the beautiful country we have the privilege to call home. We ask that you would be with our leaders – the men and women in office today and the ones who will be chosen this election year. Give them wisdom to know what to do in every situation. Bring peace and unity on issues that have caused conflict. Even if they don’t know you God, may the leaders who are trying to do what’s best for all people, be guided by the light of your truth. Thank you for the freedom we enjoy, most of all, the freedom that comes with knowing you. We pray this in Jesus name, Amen. Faith Formation

The Archdiocese for Military Services Recently, through my work with Bishop Barron, I was corresponding with Archbishop Broglio. I had no idea how big his Archdiocese is; it is the whole world (at times)! Looking out for our service people in all the branches of the service, in every corner of this world, his flock is by far one, if not the most, diverse. Here’s a little something about them and how to read more about them and a little info on making a contribution. They do incredible work and are a great blessing to our Church! -Noël (taken from www.milarch.org) Our Mission The Archdiocese for the Military Services was created by John Paul II to provide the ’s full range of pastoral ministries and spiritual services to those in the United States Armed Forces. This includes more than 220 installations in 29 countries, patients in 153 V.A. Medical Centers, and federal employees serving outside the boundaries of the USA in 134 countries. Numerically, the AMS is responsible for more than 1.8 million men, women, and children. Our History Archbishop Joseph T. Ryan was named and installed as the first ordinary of the Archdiocese for Military Services in March 1985. In January 1986 he created the administrative headquarters of the newly independent jurisdiction in the Washington, DC area. When Archbishop Ryan retired in 1991 Joseph T. Dimino, who had been an auxiliary bishop, was appointed the second ordinary for the Military Services. Archbishop Dimino retired in 1997 and was succeeded by the Most Reverend Edwin F. O’Brien, an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of New York. Archbishop O’Brien was installed as Archbishop of Baltimore on October 1, 2007. AMS Today The Archdiocese serves as the sole endorser (certifier) of Roman Catholic to the United States government. A Roman Catholic priest cannot serve within the United States Military as a priest without the express permission of the Archdiocese. As of 2020, 204 Roman Catholic priests were endorsed by the Archdiocese for active-duty military service. These chaplains serve on loan from their diocese of incardination or religious order/society and are released for a term of military service. Chaplains never become members of the Archdiocese; instead, they always remain subject to their home bishop/religious superiors. The only clergy incardinated into the AMS are its archbishop and auxiliary . Once a priest receives the endorsement and the subsequent faculties of the archdiocese, he becomes a commissioned military officer of the United States. A priest’s assignments are provided by the Office of the Chief of Chaplains of each respective branch of the U.S. military. The Archdiocese is the sole endorser of chaplains for the Veterans Administration hospitals. In 2008, 242 priests were endorsed for service in the Veterans Administration. Approximately 1.8 million Catholic men and women are served by the Archdiocese. To meet the needs of the faithful, the Archdiocese has positions for four auxiliary bishops to assist the archbishop in his pastoral duties. Three of those positions are currently filled with former chaplains; Bishop Richard Higgins from the Air Force, Bishop F. Richard Spencer and Bishop Neal Buckon from the Army. One position remains open. The Archdiocese is currently headquartered in the northeast section of Washington, DC, at the Edwin Cardinal O’Brien Pastoral Center adjacent to The Catholic University of America. Unlike a conventional diocese, the Archdiocese has no parishes or parish registries. Chapels are property of the United States government. Although the Archdiocese exercises jurisdiction over the religious education programs and the celebration of Catholic Liturgy, it maintains no legal jurisdiction over the physical property of the chapel. Because base/command chapels are United States government property, all records of sacraments performed on U.S. Military installations are maintained by the Archdiocese in its Office of Sacramental Records. This starkly contrasts with the model used in conventional parishes, where all sacraments are recorded in the parish registry. The Archdiocese currently maintains more than 2.5 million records of sacraments performed on military installations. On November 19, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, a priest of the Diocese of Cleveland, as Archbishop of the Military Services. The Archdiocese receives no funding from the United States government. Rather, the Archdiocese is solely funded by the generosity of its chaplains, men and women in uniform and private benefactors. To support go to: www.milarch.org/ donate Other Community News
