By Becky Benes

Most of my life, I have been attracted to the "other." People of dif- ferent ethnicities, cultures, and religions have been my best friends. Learning about them, their religions, and their cultures is fascinating. The more of the "other" I met, the more I wanted to meet and the more I wanted to know. This took me down many paths and afforded me great adventures. Unbeknownst to me, I was being prepared for a great mission, a greater purpose. In 1999, I was invited by Sister Joan Markus, SSND and the Diocese of San Angelo to engage in the Loyola Institute of Ministry Extension (LIMEX) program, a four-year Master’s Degree program. This was a gift from heaven. During the first cours- Benes es of LIMEX, we studied the Old Testament, the New Testament, and World Religions. I found my bliss. I loved studying my faith and finding the common ground within other faith traditions. My understanding of my friends deepened as I knew more about their faith and how it was similar to my faith. We also studied the teachings of the Catholic Church about the St. Joseph’s celebrates ’s feast day importance of interfaith dialogue.
