March 2012 Volume 28 Dear Subscribers, The big news this week is that the Israeli media is reporting that Avaya is set to buy Israeli videoconferencing manufacturer RADVISION for between $200-$250MM which has triggered a 19% increase in the price of RADVISION’s stock. Neither side has confirmed the transaction. The move would make perfect sense for Avaya which is currently owned by private equity powerhouses Silver Lake and TPG Capital. Silver Lake also owns AVI-SPL, the largest telepresence and videoconferencing systems integrator in the world. AVI-SPL recently purchased telepresence and managed service provider Iformata Communications giving AVI-SPL its own VNOC and nascent telepresence and videoconferencing exchange capability. Silver Lake also owns Sabre who provides the back end reservation systems for airline flights and travel management companies. Sabre recently announced that it would be adding virtual meeting reservations to its global scheduling and delivery system AND also announced a partnership with shared workspace provider Regus to add access to their 1200+ publicly available telepresence and videoconferencing rooms in 550 cities to Sabre’s Virtual Meeting Network. So… now add a capable videoconferencing endpoint and infrastructure capability to the Silver Lake / Avaya portfolio and you have a substantial collection of end-to-end videoconferencing capabilities. Of course hitting the market with another HD videoconferencing end-point isn’t going to set the world on fire, but given the fact that Avaya chairman and Silver Lake partner Charlie Giancarlo was the genesis for telepresence at Cisco I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a couple of key differentiators up his sleeve. Maybe one the size of a Ferrari… In other news: Enterprise Connect kicks off in Orlando from March 26th-28th. We are an official media partner and associate editor David Maldow will be attending the show. Drop him an email if you have something super cool you would like to show him. Avaya’s Brett Shockley is a Keynote speaker so I would guess that if the RADVISION deal gets completed that you might expect some details in the Keynote. Warmly, HSL Howard S. The new iPad Looks Great for Mobile Videoconferencing Today was the big day. Apple announced the latest version of the device which created, and then completely dominated, the market for tablet computers. For videoconferencing fans, this is a big deal. The demand for mobile video, and the rush from vendors to meet this demand, has been a constant theme in the industry in the last few years. While video on smart phones is valuable, the larger tablet screens can obviously provide a more compelling face to face meeting experience. If we are interested in tablets, then we are, by default, interested in iPads, which currently own the market. Continue reading... Pivothead Video Glasses Offer Impressive Quality February 22, 2012 by Zach Honig via Engadget.com -- There's a new adventure video capture company in town, and both Zeyez and GoPro would have good reason to be afraid. You may not have heard of Pivothead -- the company has had a remarkably quiet push to market over the last few months -- but the video recording eyewear startup could very well become a household name after its first products hit the market this April for $349. Aurora, Durango, Moab and Recon may offer distinct exterior designs, but they're virtually identical under the hood. Each model includes an eight-megapixel Sony sensor (that reportedly captures higher quality images than the iPhone 4S cam), a four-element glass lens, 8GB of built-in storage, a 440mAh battery (with about an hour of shooting time) and three video modes: 1080/30p, 720/60p and 720/30p. We had a chance to go hands-on with Pivothead earlier today, and took the glasses for a spin on the streets of New York City. You'll find that sample video, along with our impressions, just past the break. Continue reading... Microsoft Research Shows Off Its Next Generation Telepresence Technology Microsoft's Future Vision for "The Magic Window" a large format telepresence environment with augmented reality - From their 2009 Productivity Future Vision video Say the word Microsoft and most people will think of software (or XBox) before they think of telepresence and visual collaboration but the company has slowly and surely been building a portfolio of visual collaboration assets. Microsoft bought Skype in May of 2011 for $8.5 billion giving them the world's largest network of video endpoints and the most valuable directory to find and connect with them. The company's Xbox can do videochatusing its depth-sensing Kinect camera and the Kinect camera has been integrated into all manner of telepresence experiments from 3D telepresence rooms to scanning 3D scenesto creating augmented reality spaces to the teleoperation of humanoid robots. It is speculated that the next generation of Kinect will even be able to lip-read. Continue reading... Telepresence Options Charities - Kiva Our favorite part of being a publisher is helping deserving charities. We have been publishing a list of charities started by members of the visual collaboration industry (and charities we like) every Christmas since 2008. You can see the list from Christmas 2011 Here. Today we are launching a lending team on Kiva for telepresence and visual collaboration professionals through our industry association: Telepresence Industry Professionals (TIP). TIP is open to both members of the visual collaboration industry and the technical professionals who support telepresence, videoconferencing, UC, and visual collaboration in organizations large and small. Kiva Intercontinental Ballistic Microfinance - Best Viewed Full Screen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1V9jVtssfw&feature=player_embedded Kiva is a unique charity where donors support entrepreneurs in by making microfinance loans of as little as $25. Kiva donors can choose from thousands of entrepreneurs and target their loan to a specific country, sector, gender, and/or attributes like green or higher education initiatives. A typical borrower might be a Peruvian woman who makes peanut butter by hand looking for $750 to buy a machine to quadruple her output. Multiple Kiva members fund the loan and a local charity (called a field partner) administers the loan and collects repayments. As the loan is paid back the money is deposited back into the lender's Kiva account where they can lend again to another entrepreneur in need in a virtuous cycle that creates jobs and local economic development.
