Under the program, Fellowships are awarded to postgraduate scholars, professionals or artists with degrees. Grants are awarded to those without doctoral degrees. Fellowships and Grants are awarded for 3-10 month periods depending on the nature and scope of the research project, the recommendations of the American institution and the U.S. and Polish Academic Advisory Committees. During fiscal year 2017, 36 Polish scholars and scientists successfully completed their scholarly and scientific projects, receiving $413.000 in support from the Foundation. The Fellows and Grantees had been carefully chosen for the program in a highly selective screening process that included personal interviews in Warsaw. Among them were five Teaching Fellows – a part of the Foundation’s ongoing support for Polish Studies programs at various American universities (since 1992). During the 2016-2017 academic year. In addition to funding, the Foundation provides support to Fellows and Grantees prior to their arrival and during their stay in the United States. Every effort is made to help the participants and their families with travel, housing, medical insurance, visa, and U.S. Homeland Security procedures. Foundation staff contact Fellows and Grantees frequent- ly throughout their stay in the United States, and whenever feasible, conduct exit interviews and receive a final written activities report from each participant. The Foundation would like to take this opportunity to express its sincere appreciation to the members of the U.S. and Polish Academic Advisory Committees, whose members review and interview all of the applicants for the Fellowships and Grants Program. 9 Members of the Academic Advisory Committee for the 2016/17 Advanced Research/Study Program for Polish Citizens Ronald J. It’s no wonder given that the media often refers to Auschwitz as a “Polish concentration camp,” which is a rewrite of history. That is why I posted a petition on The Kosciuszko Foundation website asking newspapers to change their style guides to avoid using this historically erroneous phrase. It confuses undereducated readers, leading them to believe that the Holocaust was executed by Poland, rather than Nazi Germany. My sincerest thanks to all of you who signed the petition.
