This year's event was hosted by actor and comedian, Taran Killam, and once again served as a benefit for The Actors Fund. Leading the nominations this year with 7 each are the new musical, Hadestown - a folk opera produced by New York Theatre Workshop - and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, currently at the Barrow Street Theatre, which has been converted into a pie shop for the intimate staging. In the category of plays, both Paula Vogel's Indecent and J.T. Rogers' Oslo, current Broadway transfers, earned a total of 4 nominations, including for Outstanding Play. Playwrights Horizons' A Life also earned 4 total nominations, including for star David Hyde Pierce and director Anne Kauffman, earning her 4th career Lortel Award nomination; as did MCC Theater's YEN, including one for recent Academy Award nominee Lucas Hedges for Outstanding Lead Actor. Lighting Designer Ben Stanton earned a nomination for the fifth consecutive year - and his seventh career nomination, including a win in 2011 - for his work on YEN. Weeks before the production was to travel from an acclaimed run in London at the Royal Court Theatre to the East Village for a stint at the Workshop, the theatre (depending on whom you believe) either postponed or cancelled the play. Jim Nicola, the artistic director of New York Theatre Workshop, told the Guardian: ‘In our pre-production planning and our talking around and listening in our communities in New York, what we heard was that after Ariel Sharon’s illness and the election of Hamas, we had a very edgy situation. IRB protocol # 12-0485 iii Abstract Thorson, Gregory Stuart (Ph.D. Department of Theatre) The Dream Continues: American New Play Development in the Twenty-First Century Thesis directed by Associate Professor Oliver Gerland New play development is an important component of contemporary American theatre. In this dissertation, I examined current models of new play development in the United States. Looking at Lincoln Center Theater and Signature Theatre, I considered major non-profit theatres that seek to create life-long connections to legendary playwrights. I studied new play development at a major regional theatre, Denver Center Theatre Company, and showed how the use of commissions contribute to its new play development program, the Colorado New Play Summit. I also examined a new model of play development that has arisen in recent years—the use of small black box theatres housed in large non-profit theatre institutions. -

COHEN, ADAPTED FROM THE NOVEL BY SINCLAIR LEWIS SOUND DESIGN AND MUSIC BY PAUL JAMES PRENDERGAST DIRECTED BY LISA PETERSON DEAR FRIENDS, Four years ago, in the lead-up to the 2016 election, Berkeley Rep produced Tony Taccone and Bennett Cohen’s adaptation of Sinclair Lewis’ frighteningly prescient novel. With a desire to see the story reach the widest possible audience, and celebrating the impulse that led the wpa in 1936 to share the original stage version of Lewis’ novel for free with 21 theatres across the country, Berkeley Rep offered the rights to Tony and Bennett’s adaptation to theatres, community centers, universities — anyone who wanted to put together their own production or reading. And now, in 2020, this story feels all the more vital, and the need to share it widely even more compelling. I am honored that more than 75 organizations from more than 20 states have partnered with us to share this production of It Can’t Happen Here for free with their audiences and communities. We are joined in this effort by long-time theatre colleagues, by universities from Howard in Wash- ington, DC to Saint Cloud State in Minnesota (near Lewis’ hometown), by libraries, community centers, and radio stations. I am deeply grateful to Tony and Bennett, director Lisa Peterson, sound designer Paul James Prendergast and his small but mighty team, and this extraordinary cast who have collaborated across miles and time zones, through wildfires and new technology, for their conviction that the- atre matters, that narrative helps us to see the world more clearly, and that together we have the capacity to effect change. -

Additionally, our productions of LADY DAY AT EMERSON’S BAR AND GRILL and FULLY COMMITTED have recently been revived in their first Broadway productions, and THREE TALL WOMEN made a critically acclaimed Broadway debut in 2018. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: October 20, 2014 Casey De La Rosa 310.360.1981 [email protected] Sundance Institute Announces Projects and Artists for Two Fall Theatre Labs New Playwrights Studio at Flying Point and Fall Musical and Ensemble Theatre Lab at MASS MoCA David Cale, Dan LeFranc, José Rivera, Christopher Shinn and Cori Thomas Selected for Playwrights Studio, Oct. 19-26 New Work by Lucy Alibar, Elise Thoron, Frank London and 600 HIGHWAYMEN Selected for Lab at MASS MoCA, Nov. 30 – Dec. 14 New York, NY — Sundance Institute today announced the projects and artists that will participate in its two Fall artist development programs: the inaugural Playwrights Studio at Flying Point in Water Mill, NY (October 19-26), as well as the two-week Theatre Lab (November 30 – December 14) for musical theatre, ensemble-generated projects and solo work at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA). Under the supervision of Artistic Director Philip Himberg and Producing Director Christopher Hibma, the initiatives are among the Theatre Program’s five annual Labs and Residencies for theatre artists and part of the 24 artist residency labs across many creative disciplines Sundance Institute offers annually. New this fall, the Playwrights Studio at Flying Point offers Theatre Program alumni an uninterrupted period of time and the space to work on their projects in a studio setting. The two one-week sessions each year are generously hosted by George and Joan Hornig. Himberg said, “These fall labs provide unique and inspiring locations for these new and established artists to develop and explore their stories.
