The Rishis do want us to chant in the right way, for the words themselves have their own impact on our mind. Indeed, if we are careless in the chanting, it is easily possible in a language like Samskrit that we change the meaning of the word, and sometimes even convey the very opposite of what is meant. Shiksha or Sheeksha, as it is used here under Vedic license, is the science of Vedic phonetics. It governs the correct pronunciation of the syllables which make up the text. Knowledge of all the rules of this science is necessary for the correct recitation and intonation of any Samskrit verses, particularly those found in the Vedas. At the very start of our Course at Sandeepany, we underwent a thorough training in the art of Vedic Chanting. The recitation of the most important Suktams in the early part of the Course, in accordance with all the rules mentioned in this Part, was an essential part of the Course. We studied the Ganesha Atharva Sheersha, Medha Suktam, Purusha Suktam, Narayana Suktam, Shree Suktam, Durga Suktam and Ayushya Suktam. This very Upanishad was chanted over a period of two full months, learning it line by line, by breaking up the words as well as chanting it in its final form with Sandhee. The Rudram and Chamakam were then learnt under expert guidance, following a few other rules specific to them. Strict Brahmacharya and application of ash on the forehead were among these rules. The right pitch and speed of chanting was given special attention. Acharyaji also made sure that students did not break up the flow at the wrong points, especially at the Sandhees.     MANDUKYA UPANISHAD An ancient Sanskrit text on the nature of Reality James Swartz © 1996 MANDUKYA UPANISHAD Vedic culture is based on the Vedas,1 books of knowledge of great antiquity. The four Vedas are divided into three parts. The mantras, the earliest portion, are hymns to the power of nature which is seen as a kind, tolerant and merciful, yet mighty, severe, and unrelenting deity. The Brahmanas, are detailed instructions needed to perform rituals and meditations that produce certain sought-after and limited results: wealth, progeny, a happy afterlife, health, etc. Such knowledge is valuable for those who believe that happiness comes from outside themselves. A few of us doubt that lasting happiness comes from the pursuit of desired objects and/or the performance of finite activities, religious or otherwise, in a time-bound world and, for whatever reasons, are convinced that happiness comes from within. The Aranyakas or Upanishads, the third portion of each Veda, commonly known as Vedanta, agrees and delivers an “absolute” 2 knowledge that, under the right circumstances, reveals the limitless blissful Self and destroys the suffering arising from the belief in oneself as a limited being. Actions, subtle and gross, can only produce things not immediately available. For example, if I live in San Francisco and want to go to New York I need to catch a plane, or drive a car. But the Self, the limitless I, our true identity, is eternally present, the nearest of the near, so no action will help me reach it. Those versed in disputation call It the problem in dispute and the Knowers of the worlds call It the worlds.3 Continuing his teaching Swamiji said, Gaudapada pointed out that universe experienced in any manner (as Swapna, Jagrat, or any other higher state), still remains an object of experience and thus a mithya. Mithya means relative reality, meaning it has meaning only in a particular state. Once the state changes, the object is no more real. The truth of Turiya Atma is that as Observer, I am the projector and sustainer and experiencer of whatever I projected with the help of a relevant body; the dream world through the dream body and the waking world through the waking body. The bodies themselves are projections. Using the projected bodies I experience the projected universe. When this truth is missed, so many anatmas are mistaken as atma, the reality. Until now, various misconceptions with regard to the external world were pointed out. Thus Swapna Prapancha is real in swapna but not in Jagrat; jagrat prapancha is real in jagrat but not in swapna. Therefore Gaudapada says Observer alone is Satyam while observed is Mithya. Advantage of this knowledge is that mithya, relative reality, cannot affect Satyam, the absolute reality. The advantage of this knowledge is that whatever happens in Drshya Prapancha, it does not affect Me.

    BLOCK-2 INTRODUCTION The Upanishads are Hindu scriptures that constitute the core teachings of Vedanta. They do not belong to any particular period of Sanskrit literature: the oldest, such as the Brhadaranyaka and Chandogya Upanishads, date to the late Brahmana period (around the middle of the first millennium BCE), while the latest were composed in the medieval and early modern period. The Upanishads have exerted an important influence on the rest of Indian Philosophy, and were collectively considered one of the 100 most influential books ever written by the British poet Martin Seymour-Smith. The philosopher and commentator Shankara is thought to have composed commentaries on eleven mukhya or principal Upanishads, those that are generally regarded as the oldest, spanning the late Vedic and Mauryan periods. The Muktika Upanishad (predates 1656) contains a list of 108 canonical Upanishads and lists itself as the final one. Although there are a wide variety of philosophical positions propounded in the Upanishads, commentators since Shankara have usually followed him in seeing Advaita as the dominant one. Unit 1 is on “Introduction to the Upanishads.” In this unit, you will become familiar with the general tenor of the Upanishads. You are expected to recognize the differences between the Vedas and the Upanishads not only in content but also in spirit. Secondly, you should be able to notice various philosophical and primitive scientific issues which have found place in the Upanishads. In the end, you should be in a position to understand that philosophy is not merely an intellectual exercise in India, but it is also the guiding factor of human life.

    Taitreya Upanishad, Class 18 Greetings All, Chapter # 1, Anuvakaha # 11, Shloka # 1: Having taught the Vedas the preceptor enjoins the pupils, “ Speak the truth, do your duty, never swerve from study of the Vedas, do not cut off the line of descendants in your family, after giving the preceptor the fee he desires. Never err from truth, never fall from duty, never overlook your own welfare, never neglect your prosperity and never neglect the study and the propagation of the Vedas.” We are in Anuvaka # 11. It talks about Brahmacharya Ashrama. This ashrama has two steps in it. First step: In Vedic times chanting of Vedas was not written down. It was handed from the mouth to the head in the Karna Parampara. In effect the mantras were chanted and committed to memory. This chanting is called Svadhyaya Yagna and this sadhana is used to purify the mind of the chanter as well as the people listening to the chant. In this process, even the society and nation also benefited. Veda Ghosha, Vedic chanting loudly by a big group, was also performed for benefit of others. This chant is supposed to purify even the environment. Even plants grow better after this chant. This process of Vedic chanting is also called Adhyayanam. Second step: Study of Veda Mimasa consisting of understanding the meaning of Vedas in context of Karma Kanda. Here the purpose was not to understand Vedanta rather it was to understand Dharma Shastra also called Veda Poorva Mimasa. The Dharma shastra is condensed in Anuvakaha # 11. ( Note: The differences were that the Mimaṃsa school developed and emphasized karmakaṇḍa, or the study of ritual actions, using the four early Vedas, while the Vedanta schools developed and emphasized jnanakaṇḍa, the study of knowledge and spirituality, using the later parts of Vedas like the Upanishads.)
