4 ABOUT POSITIVE COACHING ALLIANCE

Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization started in 1998 at Stanford University with the mission to transform the culture of youth sports so every youth athlete can have a positive, character-building experience. Youth sports provide an endless procession of teachable moments if the adults who work with athletes see themselves as character educators able to take advantage of such learning opportunities. PCA has developed research-based content and a national distribution channel of PCA trainers and partner organizations that is changing the way the game is played, one youth sports organization at a time.

According to researchers at the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports at Michigan State University, kids who participate in organized sports do better in school, develop better interpersonal skills, are more team oriented and are generally healthier. Unfortunately, in the United States, 70% of youth drop out of organized sports before the age of 13. One of the top reasons cited is the pressure and emphasis placed on winning by coaches and parents. This “win-at-all costs” attitude has manifested itself in various forms of negative behavior, including verbal abuse and physical violence. Most coaches and parents want to be a positive influence on their children, but lack the training and practical tools.

PCA is working to change the culture of youth sports through workshops, content, and programs for leaders, coaches, parents and student athletes. In any given year, approximately 40 million children participate in youth sports, with roughly 4 million coaches leading their activity. PCA’s vision is to create a sports culture where every one of these kids love to play the game, where they look forward to practices and games as times when they will have fun, and where the joy they find in playing sports will last a lifetime. PCA’s Double-Goal Coach® curriculum helps coaches adapt the model that the first goal is winning and the second, more important goal is teaching life lessons through sports. PCA Second- Goal Parent® material trains parents to focus on children’s life lessons and not the scoreboard. PCA’s Triple-Impact Competitor® program develops youth who are committed to improving themselves, their teammates, and their sport as a whole.

PCA is headquartered in Mountain View, CA, and has Chapters in Chicago, Central Texas, Cleveland, Colorado, Hawaii, Houston, Los Angeles, Minnesota, New England, New York City, North Texas, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, Seattle, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Tampa Bay. PCA has more than 150 certified trainers ready to present workshops across the country.Phil Jackson, former President of the , is PCA’s National Spokesperson and serves on PCA’s National Advisory Board, which includes over 120 nationally and internationally renowned sports, business, and academic leaders. Steve Kerr, Head Coach of the Golden State Warriors; , Head Coach of the ; Brad Stevens, Head Coach of the ; and Shane Battier, NCAA basketball player of the year and NBA Champion, are on the National Advisory Board.

PCA has reached more than 8.6 million youth through online resources for youth and high school sports coaches, parents, student-athletes, administrators, and officials and more than 20,000 live workshops to date. As successful as PCA has been, it has reached only a fraction of the 40 million youth athletes in the United States. We are committed to impacting as many of those young athletes as we can over the coming years to ensure that they have a positive experience with sports and that more kids stay in sports and reap the positive aspects of sports, for a longer period of time.
