I would like to support the Westbury-on-Trym Society’s proposal to combine the current wards of WOT and Henlease into one. Westbury is an historical village with over 1200 of history. For the village which is the heart of the current WOT ward to be placed into the Henlease ward simply beggars belief. I trust that the commission will reconsider its proposal and adopt the WOT Society’s very sensible one

I have been a resident of in Clifton ward in Bristol for the last 14 years and am deeply concerned with the proposed changes. My concerns have been ably summarised by the Hotwells and Cliftonwood Community Association so I quote them here: The proposal to create a Ward will divide the historic neighbourhood of Hotwells between the new wards of Clifton West and Hotwells & Harbourside as well as dividing Cliftonwood from Hotwells. The community of Cliftonwood and Hotwells, is clearly recognised as a single entity by residents and defined by the parish boundary. The new boundary proposals will divide this established community rather than reflect community identity. Voters in Hotwells & Cliftonwood are currently represented by two Councillors. The proposed Hotwells & Harbourside ward will have only one. The rights of this community to lobby for changes through the City Council will be diluted with only one Councillor rather than two working on their behalf. This represents a reduction in electoral equality relative to other 2 or 3 Councillor wards, not an improvement. The proposed changes will also impact on the existing Neighbourhood Partnership structure. This has established itself as an improved system for making local government more responsive and accountable. The proposed changes represent a threat to effective local government in our area that will undermine the work that Council officers and community representatives have undertaken together in improving the delivery of local services.

Dear Sir or Madam (Review Officer),

I am writing to you object to the proposal to change the boundary of the Westbury On Trym Ward (WOT).

I understand that the proposed boundary would pass through the center of the village effectively splitting the village in two. Whilst this may appear to solve an administrative issue for the LGCBE it is completely at odds with the needs of the WOT community.

Henleaze and WOT whilst enjoying good community relations are quite different in their respective identities. Some points I would like you to consider:

 WOT has distinct transport hub in the center of the village which serves a wide area on both sides of Falcondale Road and beyond. Falcondale Road is not a barrier but an integral part of the area we call WOT.

 The Village has it’s own distinct community structure e.g. the WOT Society, church groups , social and leisure groups. e.g. toddler groups. Brownies etc. The facilities we enjoy are such as the Village Hall , The Parish Church shops , doctors surgery etc. are all part of the fabric of our Village as are the people who use and work in them , many would be placed in the “new Henleaze Ward”.

 There is a palpable community pride in the history of WOT. The village is 1,200 years old and it celebrates it’s unique place in the area by coming together for many community events such as The Village Show each September and Remembrance Sunday (quite ironic since I understand that the boundary will place the war memorial inside a “new Henleaze Ward”).

In conclusion my main concern is that from a democratic point of view, neither Henleaze nor WOT residents will be effectively represented in the proposed new ward. My concern is that one councillor could not properly reflect the diverse needs and aspirations of the voters and taxpayers of the proposed new ward.

The WOT Society have proposed a “Partnership Ward” with 3 councillors and I believe this deserves consideration.

Yours Sincerely Jan Elliott

Dividing Cliftonwood and Hotwells makes absolutely no sense. Please think again.

The Local Boundary Commission. Dear Sirs, Will you please reconsider your proposal to remove the name from the heart of a truly historic village? No doubt others will have told you about the proud historical nature of Westbury-on-Trym village; so I will not repeat what others must surely have told you. I just hope that you can arrive at a solution that can preserve this genuine village from losing its identity. Yours faithfully, Albert Evans.

Relating to Henleaze, Westbury and . To exclude the clearly recognisable centre of the village of Westbury-on-Trym from the LG ward of that name is surely wrong and can hardly 'reflect community identity', one of your three main considerations. The boundary between Henleaze and Westbury may be difficult to draw - so don't draw it. I would support the proposal of the Westbury-on-Trym Society to form a merged ward of the two, with three councillors; four other three-member wards are proposed. I also doubt the wisdom of moving the area to the west and south of Henleaze Lake from Westbury into Southmead. I live in that area and certainly feel more affinity with Henleaze and Westbury than with Southmead. This latter suggested move appears to be just to 'make up the numbers' to offset those transferred from Southmead's northern flank into and ; I do not believe it reflects community identity.

By altering the Westbury On Trym Ward, you have put Henleaze lake in Southmead Ward and have instantly reduced the value of 100's of properties in the surrounding area. We have lived in WOT for many years and there is a great sense of belonging and community and a great affinity with living by Henleaze lake, I would strongly suggest that this area of WOT not be changed. I am also very concerned that there has been no public consultation over this ward change with the first that I have heard of this has been through Facebook, this seems very unconstitutional given the far reaching impact that these proposals could mean for the residents, it almost seems that this has been attempted to be snuck in through the back door. I suggest that there will be great opposition to this change when the residents find out, with the general election coming up it may have great ramifications for the various electoral representatives.

Please reinstate Westbury village into Westbury on Trym ward. I was only explaining to my son this morning the history of Bristol's growth and the existence of villages such as Westbury on Trym and Bristol. Henleaze village has never existed. I live on the boundary of the two wards but would not have been surprised by being in either having no historical link with one rather than the other. Rewriting history in this way is unnecessary.

I cannot believe the proposal to split the center of Westbury on Trym village and place it into the ward of Henleaze. This must have been a mistake, perhaps generated by some computer software. It certainly would not have been the recommendation of any sane human being. Surely there must be better alternatives, eg reducing the number of Westbury on Trym Councillors, moving the boundaries so that at least WOT retains its village center or combining with Henleaze as a partnership ward are three infinitely better proposals

I wish to support the proposal of the Westbury on Trym Society that rather than divide Westbury on Trym into two halves, we have a "partnership ward with Henleaze" combining the two present wards into one and sharing three councillors between us, so that we maintain our historical identity and the integrity of the village. There has been a strongly rooted history here since the early 8th century when the local community included a monastery, then Saxon Christian missionaries and a medieval college of Canons. In the mid 15th century the church secured cathedral status. In the present day that sense of strong community continues, in and around the heart of Westbury on Trym is the war memorial, several churches, the well used village hall, local independent shops, the library and park and well run schools. Women's Institute events and local farmers' markets are held weekly. This is why I have chosen to live here for the last 35 years, brought up my family and for the past 10 years have volunteered in the village Oxfam bookshop where I regularly meet other local residents and visitors who choose to enjoy the character and amenities of Westbury on Trym. This proposal will resolve the issues of boundary changes and the loss of two Councillors and preserve the character and historical identity of Westbury on Trym.
