Some of you have been returning from the early days, seventeen years ago, and now are joined by over one thousand members enrolled each semester. If you are new to OLLI, a warm first time welcome to our community of active lifelong learners. OLLI at UVa continues to welcome increasing numbers of members each year. After all, people age 60 and better are the fastest growing population in the area. OLLI is proud to present this spring 2018 catalog, with more offerings than ever before. This semester features 66 new courses, as well as dozens back by popular demand. There are 27 new instructors in addition to the perennially popular instructors who continue to volunteer their time and enthusiasm. We are expanding to new locations in the Charlottesville region, including Nellysford and Crozet, and select sites on-grounds at the University of Virginia, plus new locations in Staunton and Fishersville. We try to choose locations with convenient access and parking, but some might be challenging for individual members. Please read the directions to your class locations on pages 8 and 44 to be aware of driving distance, parking, and walking descriptions. We all look forward to Registration Day on January 16! Some courses will fill quickly but remember, registration is ongoing until the class meets, so you can register any time after opening day. If a course is full, you can also register and enter the waitlist. Often a few seats open up in courses as the start date approaches. Most members register themselves online, but if you prefer to register by mail, phone, or in-person, please try to do so before registration day. These early registrations are entered, in random order, on the same day the online registration is opened. Those registrations that arrive on registration day or later will be entered after those received prior to registration day. This catalog is chock-full, so any recommended readings or required materials will be published under each course at the online registration site: http://olliuvaregistration.org. A review of the literature identifies historical perceptions of the lawn and contemporary research that links lawns to sustainability. Research data was collected by conducting personal interviews with green industry professionals and administering a survey instrument to administrators and residents of planned urban development communi- ties. Recommended guidelines for the sustainable American lawn are identified and include native plant usage to increase habitat and biodiversity, permeable paving and ground cover as an alternative to lawn and hierarchical maintenance zones depending on levels of importance or use.     March 2020 YEARS IN THE MAKING In the Fall of 2018, Student Council legislation FB18-11 was passed with the goal of constructing an online handbook for transfer students at the University of Virginia. This initiative was continued in Fall 2019 with the passing of FB19-15. The following, “An Unofficial Transfer’s Guide to Grounds,” outlines essential information about steps to take and helpful suggestions before and after transfer students arrive at the University of Virginia. This handbook was completed by UVA transfer students in an effort to share institutional and cultural knowledge, as well as their first-hand accounts of their experiences at UVA. In order to reflect the current needs of incoming and current transfer students, this collective effort falls on us, the transfer community, to maintain and represent accurate information. The version history of the current handbook reflects the many iterations it has undergone and will undergo. If you see any outdated information or have suggestions for future versions, please email [email protected]. To all transfers - new and old - welcome to the University of Virginia! We are thrilled to have you on grounds! The unique challenges that many UVA transfer students face can often lead to confusion and unwarranted stress, especially in their first semesters. The Transfer Resources Committee created the following handbook, which consists of compiled UVA and non-UVA resources, perspectives from different transfer students, and difficult-to-find academic and social information in order to help alleviate confusion and stress. Additionally, we hope that this handbook will act as a platform to amplify the transfer student voice.

Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest is owned and operated by a nonprofit group formed in 1983, to rescue the buildings and grounds for the educational and cultural benefit of the public. It has historic structures and grounds, which require special care to preserve and protect for future research and visitors. Poplar Forest may be rented for events but with the understanding that requirements differ from those of a hotel, country club, or restaurant. Poplar Forest is a preservation work in progress. It is common to have restoration and archaeological work in progress throughout the year. Poplar Forest cannot guarantee the site will appear exactly or in any other condition as when the contract is signed. It is important that you carefully read the procedures and policies before signing the rental contract. This rental guide is intended to answer questions in regard to hosting an event at Poplar Forest. It’s impossible to include all this in a 15 min. tour anyway. ü You are encouraged to observe an actual historical tour. Then pick the facts and stories from both the tour and this factsheet that interest you to craft a unique, cohesive tour that shows off your personality. ü Feel free to include material from your own independent research, but that is certainly not obligatory. I. The Founding of the University Jefferson, as part of his lifelong pursuit for the advancement of public education, sought to found a new university based on “the illimitable freedom of the human mind,” where any subject imaginable could be studied. 1816 Central College, Jefferson’s original plan for an institution of higher education in Charlottesville (so named due to its proposed location at the then geographic center of the state of Virginia), is chartered. 1817 Construction of Central College began when, in the presence of Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe, the cornerstone of Pavilion VII was laid. 1818 The Virginia General Assembly passed a bill to charter a state university. 1819 The University of Virginia is founded when Central College is selected as the site for the state university. 1825 On March 7, the first students arrive for classes, and Jefferson lives to see “the hobby of [his] old age” open its doors. 1826 Jefferson, and coincidentally John Adams, both die on July 4, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
