Vývoj letectva po I. sv. vojne Micubiši A5M Bol to japonský jednoplošný stíhač používaný japonským cisárskym námorným letectvom. Spojenci používali kódové označenie pre A5M „Claude“.V japonskom námorníctve bol označovaný ako „palubné stíhacie lietadlo typu 96“. Bol to hlavný stíhač v Japonsko – čínskej vojne. Bol jednoznačne najrozšírenejším typom lietadla u japonského námorníctva behom začiatku II. sv. vojny. V posledných mesiacoch II. sv . Vojny boli všetky zostávajúce lietadlá masívne nasadené pri útokoch kamikadze. Celkovo sa ich vyrobilo 1100 kusov a prvý let bol uskutočnený 4. februára 1935 a konštruktérom bol Džiró Horikoši. V roku 1934 zahájil japonský národný letecký úrad vývojový program 9ši. Vďaka tomuto rozsiahlemu programu čoskoro vzniklo niekoľko slávnych bojových lietadiel. Jedným z nich bolo palubné stíhacie lietadlo typ 96, neskoršie známe pod označením A5M. Bolo to prvé japonské jednoplošné stíhacie lietadlo a jeho nástup znamenal definitívny koniec závislosti na cudzích konštrukciách. Za jeho vývoj stál inžinier Džiro Horikoši, ktorý sa na konci vojny významne podieľal na vývoji vynikajúceho lietadla Micubiši A7M. Vo výrobe boli varianty: Ka – 14 prvý prototyp, A5M1 prvá sériová verzia s uzatvorenou kabínou, A5M2 druhá sériová verzia so silnejším motorom a otvorenou kabínou, A5M3 jediný vyrobený kus s 20 mm kanónom so streľbou cez vrtuľu, A5M4 cvičný stroj vyrábaný do roku 1945 v počte 103 kusov.
