S. Army Medical Research and Develop ment Conttnand during the period July 1, 1965-June 30, 1967. During this period extensive field work was undertaken in Australian New Guinea and Indonesia for the purpose of collecting arthropods of potential medical importance, particu larly ectoparasites from host animals. Participants in New Guinea were Mr. and Mrs. Josef Sedlacek, Or. J. L. Gressitt, Mr. and Mrs. Owen R. Wilkes, Mr. George E. Lippert, Mr. Richard Mitchell, Mr. Phillip Colman, Dr. Nixon Wilson, Mr. Peter Shanahan, Mr. and Mrs. G. Allan Samuelson, and Mr. Raymond Straatman. In Indonesia Mr. Josef Winkler, Mr. Josef Stusak, Mr. Straatman, and Mr. A. M. R. Wegner did field \>JOrk. These field expeditions resulted in more than 900,000 specimens of arthropods and 8,000 vertebrates which have been or are still being processed and studied as well as carefully documented.

  • Arthropod of Incanada
ARTHROPOD OF INCANADA prepared by the Biological Survey of Canada Arthropods) 1990 Published by The Entornological Society of Canada Supplernent to the Bulletin, Vo!. 23(1) March, 1991 Arthropod Ectoparasites ofVertebrates Canada Abstract Arthropod ectoparasites are a diverse element of the Canadian fauna, and fre- quently impinge upon the performance and well-being of man, domestic animals, and wildlife. The fauna is not well known, with only about 17% of the expected species recorded. The mites and chewing lice in particular need study. There is considerable potential for investigation of the ecological, physiological and systematic relationships of the ectoparasites and their hosts. Unfortunately, there has been no coordinated research effort, and much of the research has been directed only to economically important species or disease vectors. Consequently we are presented with a rather biased view of faunal relationships. The Biological Survey of Canada Arthropods) therefore recommends ways to improve the state of knowledge of Canadian arthropod ectoparasites: additional resources aimed at long-term objectives, increased awareness among a variety of biological disciplines, and fruitful avenues for future research.

  • Observations on the Function and Structure of the Tritosternum of Selected Mesostigmatid Mites
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF JAMES GEORGE WERNZ for the DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Name of student) (Degree) in Entomology presented onMarch 29, 1972 (Major) (Date) Title:OBSERVATIONS ON THE FUNCTION AND STRUCTURE OF THE TRITOSTERNUM OF SELECTED MESOSTIG- MA TID MITES Redacted for privacy Abstract approved: Dr. Gerald W. Krantz Glyptholaspis americana (Berl.), G. confusa (Foa) and deutonymphal Parasitus sp. were studied to determine the function of the tritosternum.Studies were conducted on feeding, cleaning, temperature and humidity sensitivity using intact individuals and individuals whose tritosterna had been surgically removed. The tritosternum was found to have two functions: 1) As a cleaning device to keep the deutosternal groove, deutosternal teeth and hypostome free of debris; 2) As a fluid-conserving device while feeding, being used in conjunction with the deutosternal groove; Sagittal and transverse serial sections were made to determine the structure of the tritosternum. The tritosternum was found to be discontinuously hollow, typically semi-circular in cross section, and with a bichambered base. The tritosternal base possesses two bands of muscle, each innervated by a tiny nerve. • A Summary List of Fossil Spiders and Their Relatives Compiled By
A summary list of fossil spiders and their relatives compiled by Jason A. Dunlop (Berlin), David Penney (Manchester) & Denise Jekel (Berlin) with additional contributions from Lyall I. Anderson, Simon J. Braddy, James C. Lamsdell, Paul A. Selden & O. Erik Tetlie 1 A summary list of fossil spiders and their relatives compiled by Jason A. Dunlop (Berlin), David Penney (Manchester) & Denise Jekel (Berlin) with additional contributions from Lyall I. Anderson, Simon J. Braddy, James C. Lamsdell, Paul A. Selden & O. Erik Tetlie Suggested citation: Dunlop, J. A., Penney, D. & Jekel, D. 2014. A summary list of fossil spiders and their relatives. In World Spider Catalog (2014). World Spider Catalog. Natural History Museum Bern, online at http://wsc.nmbe.ch, accessed on {date of access} Last updated: 24.06.2014 INTRODUCTION Fossil spiders have not been fully cataloged since Bonnet’s Bibliographia Araneorum and are not included in the current Catalog. Since Bonnet’s time there has been considerable progress in our understanding of the fossil record of spiders – and other arachnids – and numerous new taxa have been described. For an overview see Dunlop & Penney (2012). Spiders remain the single largest fossil group, but our aim here is to offer a summary list of all fossil Chelicerata in their current systematic position; as a first step towards the eventual goal of combining fossil and Recent data within a single arachnological resource. To integrate our data as smoothly as possible with standards used for living spiders, our list for Araneae follows the names and sequence of families adopted in the Platnick Catalog. For this reason some of the family groups proposed in Wunderlich’s (2004, 2008, 2012) monographs of amber and copal spiders are not reflected here, and we encourage the reader to consult these studies for details and alternative opinions.

The phyletic age of reptiles since their origin in the late Carboniferous, Mites has favored vectors and pathogens to co-evolve through millions of years, bridging to the present host-vector- Ticks pathogen interactions. The origin of vector-borne diseases is dated to the early cretaceous with Trypanosoma Mosquitoes Sand flies tidae species in extinct sand flies, ancestral of modern protozoan hemoparasites of zoonotic concern (e.g., Bacteria Leishmania and Trypanosoma) associated to reptiles. Bacterial RVBDs are represented by microorganisms also Leishmania affecting mammals of the genera Aeromonas, Anaplasma, Borrelia, Coxiella, Ehrlichia and Rickettsia, most of them Trypanosoma having reptilian clades. Finally, reptiles may play an important role as reservoirs of arborivuses, given the low Arboviruses host specificity of anthropophilic mosquitoes and sand flies. In this review, vector-borne pathogens of zoonotic Evolution concern from reptiles are discussed, as well as the interactions between reptiles, arthropod vectors and the zoonotic pathogens they may transmit.
