Miłej lektury 4| sPIs tReŚcI 3 – Od Redakcji 4 – Spis treści 6 – Plebiscyt 2017 10 – Porterety improwizowane 11 – Wydarzenia 14 – Wspomnienie 14 Jon Hendricks (1921-2017) Pionier scatu, wzór współczesnych gwiazd wokalistyki 16 Kevin Mahogany (1958-2017) My Romance 18 – Płyty 18 Pod naszym patronatem 22 TOP NOTE 26 Recenzje Włodek Pawlik – Songs Without Words Możdżer bawi się brzmieniem i zaciera granice Michał Sołtan – MaloGranie Daniel Popiałkiewicz – Nada D.R.A.G. – Oberek Amusing Companions – ain’t so bad Polskie składanki jazzowe Thomas Fonnesbæk & Justin Kauflin – Synesthesia Stefano Bollani Trio – Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic: Mediterraneo Vein – Vein Plays Ravel Organic Quartet – Terms And Conditions Apply Asmundsen & Co – Pastor’n Vijay Iyer Sextet – Far From Over Cowboys & Frenchmen – Bluer Than You Think Philipp Gerschlauer, David Fiuczynski, Jack DeJohnette, Matt Garrison, Giorgi Mikadze – Mikrojazz!

Tomasz Stanko: Jazz as a Synonym for Freedom b y P e t e r M o n a g h a n Tomasz Stanko, the preeminent Polish jazzman, and one of the greatest trumpeters in the art form, ever, has called Chet Baker “my first trumpet love, followed by Miles, who continued as my guru until his very end.” He also acknowledges the in fluence o f a wide variety of other trumpet innovators of the modern era: Clifford Brown, Kenny Dorham, Fats Navarro, Booker Little, Don Cherry... That pretty well covers the trumpet waterfront. But Stanko also nods to other essential jazz heroes: John Coltrane, Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, the Jazz Messengers... But you can get a further sense o f how the Polish trumpeter’s aesthetic works from his comment that “as far as my sound is concerned, I believe that [painter Vincent] Van Gogh, [saxophonist] Coleman Hawkins, [writer W illiam ] Faulkner, [trumpeter] Roy Eldridge, [artist Amedeo] M odigliani, [writer W illiam S.] Burroughs, and [trumpeter] Buck Clayton might have helped in its buildup.” Stanko once said: “Various media, such as film , theatre, painting, literature and poetry, as well as philosophy and humanity, in its broad sense, have had an effect on me as a composer, improviser, and artist.” This month, we’ll get another chance (Triple Door, March 19) to hear why Stanko has become, through 40 years o f play ing in many of the most important bands and moments of European jazz — in fact, of any jazz — a true individualist. He is, nonetheless, rooted in and resonant w ith the course of modern jazz.

  • How Twin Peaks Changed the Face of Contemporary Television
“That Show You Like Might Be Coming Back in Style” 44 DOI: 10.1515/abcsj-2015-0003 “That Show You Like Might Be Coming Back in Style”: How Twin Peaks Changed the Face of Contemporary Television RALUCA MOLDOVAN Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca Abstract The present study revisits one of American television’s most famous and influential shows, Twin Peaks, which ran on ABC between 1990 and 1991. Its unique visual style, its haunting music, the idiosyncratic characters and the mix of mythical and supernatural elements made it the most talked-about TV series of the 1990s and generated numerous parodies and imitations. Twin Peaks was the brainchild of America’s probably least mainstream director, David Lynch, and Mark Frost, who was known to television audiences as one of the scriptwriters of the highly popular detective series Hill Street Blues. When Twin Peaks ended in 1991, the show’s severely diminished audience were left with one of most puzzling cliffhangers ever seen on television, but the announcement made by Lynch and Frost in October 2014, that the show would return with nine fresh episodes premiering on Showtime in 2016, quickly went viral and revived interest in Twin Peaks’ distinctive world. In what follows, I intend to discuss the reasons why Twin Peaks was considered a highly original work, well ahead of its time, and how much the show was indebted to the legacy of classic American film noir; finally, I advance a few speculations about the possible plotlines the series might explore upon its return to the small screen. Keywords: Twin Peaks, television series, film noir, David Lynch Introduction: the Lynchian universe In October 2014, director David Lynch and scriptwriter Mark Frost announced that Twin Peaks, the cult TV series they had created in 1990, would be returning to primetime television for a limited nine episode run 45 “That Show You Like Might Be Coming Back in Style” broadcast by the cable channel Showtime in 2016.

February 2012 | No. 118 Your FREE Guide to the NYC Jazz Scene nycjazzrecord.com TIM BERNE Berne-ing the Midnight Snakeoil ROY • RENÉ • PETE • OUTNOW • EVENT HARGROVE MARIE LA ROCA SIMS RECORDS CALENDAR For the last several months, much of the national news has been devoted to the (not-all-that) upcoming presidential election. Now that it is less than ten months away, coverage will only intensify and voting, that great totem of democracy, will (or should) be on everyone’s mind. But you can get a headstart on the process: New York@Night participate in The New York City Jazz Record’s Second Decade poll. As we approach 4 the milestone of our 10th anniversary (May 2012), we‘d like to hear from you, our readers, about the job we’re doing and suggestions you have for improvement. Interview: Roy Hargrove Visit our homepage (nycjazzrecord.com) and click on the “Take Survey” button at 6 by Russ Musto the very top (no lines or newfangled electronic voting machines); a few minutes of your time will give us invaluable information as we at The New York City Jazz Artist Feature: René Marie Record start planning for the next 10 years. 7 by Marcia Hillman As we hunker down for the city’s coldest month (supposedly), don’t get too comfortable wrapped in your afghans and drinking hot chocolate with an excessive On The Cover: Tim Berne amount of marshmallows. Saxophonist Tim Berne (On The Cover), a New York stalwart has released his debut on ECM Records and celebrates with a concert at the Rubin Museum.
