Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On Tuesday this week we will celebrate the Feast of St. Joseph, the Patron of our Parish. Our Apostolic Administrator, Archbishop Brunett, whose middle name is Joseph, will celebrate the 9:00 am Mass with our school student body and faculty. You

Fr. Paul Schmidt are encouraged to be there. Archbishop , whose middle name is also Joseph, was here for last year’s feast during his Pastoral Visitation. My middle

name is also Joseph; I am named after my grandfather, Joseph Kilzer, who was a fine

role model – a faithful husband, the father of twelve children, an honest business man,

and a loyal member of St. Mary’s Parish in Richardton, North Dakota.

The diocese of Oakland contains several parishes dedicated to St. Joseph.

Mission San Jose takes St. Joseph’s patronage back to the end of the 18th century. St.

Joseph’s in Alameda received special honors when it was named a Basilica by the Pope. St. Joseph the Worker in Berkeley honors the foster father of Jesus as a working man, who labored to support his family. Another parish named for St. Joseph, a Portuguese national parish in West Oakland, was absorbed into St. Andrew’s Parish, St. Joseph, and then further absorbed into the new parish of the Cathedral of Christ the Light. St. Joseph had an influence on the Second Vatican Council. During the early Our Patron, sessions of the Council, the bishops were discussing the reform of the liturgy. Many favored change; a minority saw little or no need for change. The proceedings were and of the being paralyzed by what we Americans might call filibustering on the part of the minority. Pope John XXIII, who was keeping track of the situation, and whose name Universal was Giuseppi before he became Pope, noticed that things were bogging down. He announced that he was adding the name of St. Joseph to the list of saints in the Roman Church. Canon (what we now call the First Eucharistic Prayer -- the only Eucharistic Prayer we had in the Latin Rite). This simple gesture sent a signal to the bishops at the Council. If the most sacred part of the Mass, the Canon, could be changed, it was OK to change things! The bishops proceeded to complete the Constitution on the Liturgy. Pope John’s intervention helped to set the tone for the entire Council. In the document on the Church, this liturgical insertion is cited, in the section on the Communion of Saints. “Celebrating the Eucharistic sacrifice, therefore, we are most closely united to the worshiping Church in heaven, as we join with and venerate the memory first of all of the glorious ever-Virgin Mary, of Blessed Joseph and the blessed apostles and martyrs and of all the saints.” St. Joseph is the Patron of the Universal Church. We pray that he is watching over the Church now as our new Pope Francis has been chosen, who may be installed on St. Joseph’s Day. May St. Joseph continue to watch over our parish, as we welcome among us Archbishop Alexander Joseph Brunett. And Viva il Papa Francesco!
