Much is happening this week and this month. The Oktoberfest is going on this weekend. Thank you to all who have worked so hard for the success of this annual event. By the time you read this, there will still be a day left for you to participate. Come and enjoy all the varieties of food. Meet your fellow-parishioners. Watch the children enjoy their games. Win a cake. Buy a book. The final raffle drawing will take place after the Pig Race. Fr. Paul Schmidt Alexander Joseph Brunett took over the administration of the

Diocese of Oakland last Thursday, as Archbishop Salvatore Joseph Cordileone took

over the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Oakland priests will get to meet our new

shepherd at a meeting on Wednesday of this week. Archbishop Brunett will be with us until a new bishop of Oakland is named. That could take some time. The Archbishop comes to us most recently from . Before that he was bishop of Helena, . And before that he was a priest of the Archdiocese of . Oakland seems to attract bishops from Detroit with Joseph as their middle name! Please pray for him and for our former bishop. It is not easy to shepherd a diocese October these days. These good men need all the prayers they can get. events for October is Respect Life month. You will find inserts in the bulletin issued by the United States Bishops’ Conference dealing with various aspects of the Church’s teaching on the subject of human life. Please read these and reflect on them. The St. Joseph dignity of the human person from conception until natural death is a cornerstone of the Church’s teaching – and of civilization. As respect for life diminishes we are all harmed. During October we count attendance at Mass and send the numbers to the bishop’s office. This annual count is a reminder of the importance of our attendance at weekend Eucharist. It is also an occasion to renew our efforts to celebrate the

liturgy with dignity and devotion, to participate actively in the recited and sung

prayer – and to get to Mass in time for the whole Mass, Liturgy of the Word and

Liturgy of the Eucharist.

The Mass is our greatest treasure. We should never take it for granted.

October is also the month of the Holy Rosary. Families are encouraged to

say the Rosary together at home. Father Patrick Peyton’s Rosary Crusade years ago

had the slogan “The Family that prays together stays together.” Families today need

divine help more than ever – to stay together and to grow together in love. We are also celebrating the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima next Saturday at the 8:00 a.m. Mass. You are invited to join in this celebration. On October 11 we observe the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. The Synod of Bishops from around the world will be meeting in with the Holy Father to discuss re-evangelization. Please pray that the Holy Spirit will guide them, so that they may come up with practical plans to bring Jesus Christ to those who have lost him and those who have never received him. Finally October 7 is the 85th birthday of Father Richard Gagliardi. We wish Father a Happy Birthday in his new residence and are pleased that he will still be close by and with us at liturgy and on other occasions. Your Pastor, Father Paul Schmidt Our Week at St. Joseph’s
