Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH)

Webinar on Habitat Planning: An Adaptive Climate Change Strategy

The Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) in collaboration with Institute of Architects (IAP), Karachi Chapter arranged a zoom webinar on Friday, 5 February 2021, titled “Habitat Planning: An adaptive climate change strategy”. Around 9,000 participants including development professionals, members architects of IAP Karachi Chapter, representatives of AKDN agencies and members of voluntary bodies attended the webinar. AKAH’s leadership from Pakistan and the Geneva office briefed the audience about AKAH’s mandate of building safer habitats through developing synergies with leading international and local research institutes in designing tools for habitat planning. Mercy Corps has also conducted training of staff of these healthcare facilities in infection prevention and control to improve their capacities and ensure the same at facilities. Awareness campaign Mercy Corps is running mass awareness campaign on the impacts, preventive measures, vaccine and myths around COVID- 19. Mercy Corps has not only engaged religious leaders in its project locations but is also utilizing the available mobile networks to disseminate information through voice messages. Rehabilitation of 10 Dug Wells SIF has rehabilitated 10 dug wells and constructed animal troughs in order to use the water in an efficient way. The dug wells are 5ft wide, with the height of 7ft*7 ft and elevated 2.5 ft from ground level with raised parapet wall around the dug wells mouth, which is kept up to 1 ft to avoid falling accidents of humans and animals. In addition to dug wells rehabilitation; Operation and Maintenance Committees (O&M) were also formed and trained to keep the water sources functional so that drought affected community benefit from these water sources in a sustainable manner. SIF organized 40 Disaster Risk Reduction sessions with men and women of drought affected communities in Tharparkar. Different types of hazards and mitigation strategies were discussed in the sessions. Community members were engaged in identifying their village level hazards and VDCs were also trained on response strategies through mock exercises on firefighting and first aid techniques. The VDCs were also equipped with necessary DRR kits. Provision of cash assistance to flood- affected households in -Sindh IF has provided cash assistance to 2,721 flood affected households in district Jamshoro. Each household has been provided three instalments, each installment amounting to PKR7,500. The training sessions focused on COVID-19 prevention, health & hygiene, nutrition & dietary diversity.

Capacity Building of widows on Livestock Management in Punjab SIF through its Orphan Sponsorship Project 2021 has built the capacity of 10 widows on livestock management. SIF will provide the small ruminants to these widows to increase the household income and to improve the dairy products consumption for SIF registered orphans of under age 18. SIF is also building the capacity of orphans’ guardians on different vocational and technical skills in semi-urban localities of Rawalpindi andIslamabad. SIF has registered 366 orphans (boys and girls) in its one-to-one sponsorship project from about 290 families.
