    D. PROVIDENCE AND HISTORIES: AFRICAN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES WITH EMPHASIS ON THE PERSPECTIVE OF BLACK LIBERATION THEOLOGY Introduction Black theology as a particular perspective and method in the field of theology is a relatively new phenomenon which has roots in the religious history of the slave ancestors of today's African-Americans.1 Black theology, like most theology, is essentially an attempt to understand the meaning and purpose of human life in the context of a community which believes in God. Black theologies, though diverse, all seek to understand the meaning and pur- pose of Black humanity in the context of a society which is inimical and oppres- sive to its existence. Recent news report would suggests that assertions that African- Americans are the victims of systemic genocide may not be too radical. The infant mortality rate of African-American babies in major United States cities is equal to that of some third world countries; the life expectancy of Blacks decreased in the last six months; suicide rates have increased; the major threat to life for Black males between the ages of 22 and 45 is murder; Black males and females experience a higher rate of incarceration in prisons; deaths by aids and drugs is steadily increas- ing; etc. The development "life statistics" have complex histories but the envi- ronmental stresses of high unemployment, homelessness, miseducation, poor medical care, general poverty, and racism are contributing factors. These condi- tions have a systemic origin and require systemic solutions. John W. Fleming suggests that in its initial stages of development, Black the- ology was united in its goal but diverse in its response in addressing the reality of the "color-caste system" and oppression which characterize the social reality of African-Americans.

She then interprets the retrieval of African cultural retensions through the lens of popular religion. In her final section she identifies the Black Catholic subject of Tradition.] O SPEAK ABOUT TRADITION and the traditions of African American T Catholicism is not without contention.1 Almost from the beginning, indeed, even now, the faith praxis of African American Catholics has been met with arrogance and suspicion. These reactions stem chiefly from the notion that African American Christianity is restricted to, if not identical with, a certain form of Protestantism. This misconception has been ab- sorbed not only into our religious, cultural, and social commonsense, but has been formalized in scholarship, that is, in the prevailing American religious and social historiography. On the one hand, authoritative voices among Catholic historians, sociologists, and theologians treat the notion of the immigrant church as the primary interpretative paradigm for Catholic M. One of these was the Augustana Lutheran Church, founded by Swedish Lutheran immigrants and maintain­ ing an independent existence from 1860 to 1962 when it became a part of a larger Lutheran community, the Lutheran Church of America. The character of the Augustana Church can be studied from different viewpoints. In this volume Dr. George Hall describes it as a missionary church. It was born out of a missionary concern in Sweden for the thousands who had emigrated. As soon as it was formed it began to widen its field. Then its representatives were found in In­ dia, Puerto Rico, in China. The horizons grew to include Africa and Southwest Asia. Two World Wars created havoc, but also national and international agencies.

Creating the Litmus Test: Abortion, Mainline Protestants, and the Rise of the Religious Right Abstract Scholars and laypeople have become concerned that American religion and politics has increasingly divided between conservatives and liberals, resulting in a "culture war" that leaves little common ground on salient social issues. Drawing on archival and periodical sources and a comparative-historical research design, I seek to understand the causes and consequences of the shifting relationship between religion and politics by examining how large, moderate and mainstream Protestant institutions have struggled to maintain cohesion and prestige throughout the increasingly contentious politics of abortion. In the early-1960s, no Mainline Protestant institutions supported expanding abortion access. Over 1966-1972, all the same institutions released official onouncementspr in support of expanding abortion access. Since this time, particularly from 1987-1992, all these institutions faced increased internal debate over the issue and shifted in conservative directions to varying degrees. I find that the debate around abortion among Mainline Protestant institutions was not generally characterized by polarization around two sides but rather by much consensus, change over time, ambiguity, and often ambivalence toward the issue.

The Complex Relationship between Jews and African Americans in the Context of the Civil Rights Movement Abstract The Civil Rights Movement occurred throughout a substantial portion of the twentieth century, dedicated to fighting for equal rights for African Americans through various forms of activism. The movement had a profound impact on a number of different communities in the United States and around the world as demonstrated by the continued international attention marked by recent iterations of the Black Lives Matter and ‘Never Again’ movements. One community that had a complex reaction to the movement, played a major role within it, and was impacted by it was the American Jewish community. The African American community and the Jewish community were bonded by a similar exclusion from mainstream American society and a historic empathetic connection that would carry on into the mid-20th century; however, beginning in the late 1960s, the partnership between the groups eventually faced challenges and began to dissolve, only to resurface again in the twenty-first century.

LUTHERAN QUIZ As I investigated the Lutheran distinctives, I was relieved to see the emphasis Luther placed on fathers teaching the Christian faith to their children. Each Chief Part of the Small Catechism declares, “As the head of the family should teach his household…” It echoes my own conviction about what Scripture teaches. Indeed, during my time as a non-denominational church pastor I was constantly teaching our fathers how to teach the Christian faith to their little ones by the use of various catechisms. We even stepped it up a notch when our parents and children participated in a Bible Trivia match, utilizing competition against other churches. Other churches in our area memorized the same questions and answers, allowing us to compete on both the State and National levels. This ministry was an important piece in teaching the faith to our children. After discussing my experience with Pr. Bruss, we are creating something similar specifically for those children ages, 6 to 11. We want to instill in them the Bible knowledge as well as highlighting the Lutheran difference so that when Pr. Bruss, Deaconess Linda and I have those same children in catechism class, there is plenty to build upon. HOW IT WORKS: First, children and their parents (parents are key to success with this!) begin working on memorizing the questions and their answers. These are simple questions, with many answers containing only one word. When my children were little we reviewed questions at meals, throughout the day and at bed time.
