I do have time to do that if you all think it looks wonky. Have fun. WOW, I don't have a Paranda yet, mostly because my hair is so very short it would be of no use to me right now. But I have to remember this! I'll be able to wear my hair up much sooner than anticipated : Thanks for the tutorial! And all the inspiration, everyone! I didn't even notice right away that the bun is off-center I had to really look to notice. Get in dimmer lighting at the concert and I'm sure no one will ever know the difference :. Thanks y'all! I'm glad there are no votes to redo it because my hubby is rushing me. It will likely rain on us! That's a lovely paranda, Ebrox. May I ask where you got your hairstick? Thank you! Thanks, I'll give my German a workout. I absolutely adore the colors! While my own hair is still too short, I'm growing out a pixie and the longest parts are just beginning to touch my shoulders, my daughter on the other hand has approx. I picked two quite vivid or so I thought colors for the first one, but strangely enough they blended nearly seamlessly in my daughter's light, light blonde hair..! Actually I think neither of the yarn pictures reflect the real color, I'd describe them IRL as a sharp mint green and vivid pastel orange. Can you actually describe color as both "vivid" and "pastel" at the same time..? Your daughter's hair is very pretty Fluke, and I like the subtle stripes of color in her braid from the paranda. I think you're on to something there, Ndayeni, I'll be looking for some more contrasting yarn. I thought the colors would REALLY pop in her hair, because when in their bundles the color looks really strong, heheh. I could probably also use more strands, I only did 20 strands pr. Fun, fun, fun!! Can't wait to be able to wear them myself!! Hair sticking out everywhere! So I knotted it at my neck and brought it all the way around, headband style. I braided into my French braid but my hair is a few inches past shoulder.. It looks very lovely on you. Love the colors you used as well. I'll have to remember that for whenever I get around to trying one, though my hair is possibly a bit to long to do it the same way. These were so easy to make, OP! Thank you for the instructions!! I love bright colors, so I picked out some fun skeins while I was shopping yesterday. Thank you again, OP!! I love the colours you chose! I'm having a hard time following the instructions as I'm a visual learner so hopefully I can find something on youtube. I don't have a link but you will see it there when you search it. I had to watch it several times to understand the knot. Found it Thank you God for the lovely Arrow! Of course we all know that tradition demands I do a purple one! I need to get more purple to show at the top of my braid, but not bad for the very first try! That was fast! And you did a great job, too. Isn't it easier than you expected? It was for me. Getting the actual braid started was alittle tough, but all in all it wasn't bad. Certainly not crown braid terrible. I love love love love looove all these pretty parandi! I found this thread while on skype with my bf and he got to watch with amusement as I figured out how to make them and made a couple! I have a total abundance of wool and yarn at my disposal now, as my mum was an avid knitter and always bought way too much! She died at the beginning of last month so I've been thinking about taking up knitting so it doesn't all go to waste I know how expensive some of the stuff is! And now I have another way to play with it until I find time to learn to knit! It's now 1 in the morning, a time which I have not seen in many a month, as my bedtime usually falls around ten. Wow they're gorgeous! You're hair is absolutely stunning by the way! I'm new to this site but I've seen your youtube videos and website before. They're one of the reasons I started growing out my hair and trying to take care of it better! Hopefully my hair can be half as pretty as yours one day! I just made some and frenchbraided them into my hair for sleep brauds. Hoping to wake up to looser braid waves and all the way to my ends :. I did two mini Parandi a couple of days ago from my temples then used the yarn to tie into a bow, not quite the classic but it worked so well on my shoulder length hair. Yay, us shorties can make hairstyles work, you just have to be creative. Thank you Maybe, to be honest, we didn't get on very well at all so it doesn't upset me as much as it should! Sorry, I've been watching Torrin's video's a lot recently! Yeah, I did my parandi photos but the black one didn't turn out very well and the multicoloured one was eaten by my hair as a regular braid. Soooo I frenched it! As for the mousey, they haven't moved since I took the photo so I'm able to say the one in the photo is Lotus! The only way I can tell them apart is by their tails, the identical stripy buggers! So I've spent all morning reading this thread, and halfway through I fetched some yarn and made my own paranda. The only trouble I'm having is some minor pulling and the fact that none of my hair toys are good at holding a bun of this size. I made a kind of flat bun, but it'still at bit too much for my trusted toys. Wanna see? I rope braided the yarn before putting it in my hair. Samitra, That is such a gorgeous shade of blue, and goes so nicely with your hair colour! Hoping to wake up to looser braid waves and all the way to my ends : So my braids waves do look nice this morning! I had a ball of black wool so it hides in my hair. I had about 5" of the ball left at the end, so funny. I made them smaller since I was putting 2 in. I used 15 strands per paranda instead of But I am greedy for even looser wave so I will make some more with some other wool I have tonight. Hoping to wake up to looser braid waves and all the way to my ends : So I've spent all morning reading this thread, and halfway through I fetched some yarn and made my own paranda. I love that colour. Pixiekitten - I love the colors in yours! It reminds me of beautiful parrot feathers. Thank you whylime13! By the way, you name isn't emily is it? Only everyone calls my boyfriends cousin whylime because It's emily backwards xD It just seemed strange to see that name here! I love bright colors, too!! Samitra, that blue is stiking against your natural hair color. Guess who gets paid today??! Guess who has two thumbs and is going to Hobby Lobby to look at yarn? Thanks heaps I'm going to love using these! Looks like you did a great job with them :. That blue one is really beautiful. Looks like you did a great job with them What is firefly yarn? I was about to PM you asking what in the world that blue one was made from I'm late to this party of a thread. But this is great! I have to go to homecoming in a month, prom in spring, plus the school's junior military ball, and since I stubbornly refuse to let myself heat style, these would be a great alternative to just wearing my hair down. Maybe I could get one to match my dress I hope I can pull it off, the directions don't look really challenging. It's really easy. I recommend youtube and there's a tutorial among the first responses on the search. Inky, ooooooooooo pretty!! I will have to find some of that firefly!! Rosethorn, fun colors!! And LOL on that short arms bit. I feel the same when I am doing my updos. Diva: Thanks so much! I would quote your post but every time I try, it says I'm under ten characters Made another paranda yesterday. It's not quite as thick as my last one. I love red!! Quick question for all you parandi-wearing peeps out there: How do I braid this in so that my hair doesn't eat all of it? Maybe I am missing a trick. That is why I made that last one so thick. I've braided this in my hair 5 times and I get the same result. Here's the pic: I am sad that only the outside shows. I made my parandi with 6 strands so I can use them for either three stranded plaits, or two stranded rope braids Braiding it like I would braid just my hair doesn't work for me either. What works for me is to keep moving it to the outside and rearranging it as you go to keep it in the right place to show up along the braid. Thank you for resurrecting this thread! I saw it at , and I need to get up at , but I still had to try making one But the bun is very stable, I even managed to get it to stay with a hair stick on the first try. When I wasn't hurrying to work; this is held with my trusty hairpins. The paranda is made of a cheap acrylic yarn, 6 strands in each braid part. The next one I make will be a little thicker and longer I think. I made it 6 inches longer than my hair, as the instructions said, but that only gave me an inch of pure yarn braid after the end of my hair. So the next one will be longer, thicker, and possibly with tassels Oh the possibilities! It arrived today, so suffice to say I didn't waste any time. Would you believe this paranda used an entire 50 gram ball of yarn? I guess making 62 strands that are each 90" long will do that Thank you for this! I'm gonna have to visit the wool shop and see if I can find some brighter ones myself I ended up using two full balls of Firefly in mine as my hair's only waist length and layered, so I needed the extra bulk I think there's a version called "Ladder" as well just in case anybody else is trying to get a hole of some! GREAT idea!! I just wish I had a third or fourth arm to help me out. It would be nicer if someone would help me "see" as I am braiding, but my 10 year-old DS would rather play his video games. PIC Pic's taken after a day at work, so there are fuzzies. I've been using cheap acrylic yarn as well. Need to add Hobby Looby on my shopping to-do list! Ooooo, I didn't even think about doing a rope braid. This is soooooo pretty and your hair is s. I'm always very jealous of people's cute rose buns, I don't really have enough hair to achieve them properly yet, so it was one of the first things I tried, definitely my favourite so far! I'd definitely suggest buying two balls as the yarn is very thin! And you're right, I'd definitely recommend two balls just in case! Thank you so much! I love the multi coloured ones! I had another go! I was only planning on growing to waist but I may kinda of sort of be in love with my classic length braid! I am really grateful for this thread. I just take them out in the morning and my hair is not all squashed looking like if I had slept on it loose and it is neat enough to wear to work without striaghtening it. Will be using this method until my hair is long enough to go up into a neat, professinoal looking updo gonna be awhile since I am APL, thick haired and heavily layered. Really, it is godsend. Haha tonight I tried to take my paranda out in a rush What happens is a big messy tangle of wool and hair! I had about 2 mins to remove it, patience is definitely needed! It definately made my hair stay perfect all night for a concert. I loved it! My hair did not budge! I will do this again if ever I have a festival or concert where I don't want to risk my hair not staying put. I have to be really careful getting it out, too. Which means it unfortunately doesn't get used as much as I'd like to. Well, that and the time I have to spend getting it in. I don't think I've put a picture of mine up yet, so I'll describe it: Multicolored yarn, black, blue, green, and yellow. I love it. Having each a different color also makes it easier to keep track of everything. This is great! My first attempt failed, I need to make the strands longer, but it was a great first try. It's super comfortable. Please excuse the laundry! I took a break from folding it to make and try this out. I like your colour choices. I'm much too impatient to braid my hair, let alone my hair plus the extra length of a paranda! But the other day I discovered that I can actually use the paranda without braiding. Takes about ten seconds more than a hair-only cinnabun would and still gives me the interesting effect of the contrasting yarn! I have the same problem. LOL great minds think alike :rollin:. I have. Nice to know it works! Did you use a hair tie to anchor the thing? I was thinking that perhaps the top of the paranda wouldn't stay if you don't twist the length at the base the way you do for a cinnabun. I don't want to go and try this right now because my current updo is too comfortable to mess with. No anchoring! I also don't tie my cinnabuns maybe that's why they suck, LOL. I use sticks, forks, parandi and whatnot to cancel out the hair elastics. Sometimes when I Dutch braid a paranda and start very high and have no time I use it but that's pretty much it OK, I'm tired of hearing this, so I demand you name and shame. Who in the world gave you the totally outrageously contrary-to-fact idea that your cinnabuns suck?! Also, I'm going to try the lazy wrap paranda bun sans hairtie anchorage the moment I take my current unimpressive but nevertheless non-sucky cinnabun down. It's a slippery day for my hair so this should be an interesting experiment. No worries for Cathy, it's just her generally low hair self-esteem. She and her hair are not the best friends. But Cathy is working overtime on improving the relationship ; Let me know how it goes! I'm curious :. I had a look at your blog picture. It's fascinating to see how the paranda twists around. When you're just using hair it's impossible to see how many twists it takes to get to the end. I like your result! Let me know how it goes! I'm curious : Got it right on the second try. My hunch was correct; unless you take measures to prevent it, the top of the paranda wants to slip down the length to the point where it's visible on the outside of the bun. My fix was to hook my left thumb into the loop created by the top of the paranda; that held it in place while I completed the wrap. The result was nice and stable, but I'm not sure I like the distribution of hair vs. I think it looks nicer twisted as for a cinnabun, at least with my black merino paranda. I was surprised at how nice the effect is. I don't get the same result every time, but it can end up looking almost braided, even though it isn't! I've made a couple more, but my problem is that when I get to where my hair ends, and it's just straight paranda, the ends of my hair flick out. Is there anyway to reduce this? I think your paranda makes a really nice frame for your bun. I like it. Just made my first one, wish I could share a pic, but I'm overwhelmed by my camera and the process of transfering pics to computer and sizing and all. At any rate, I liked it, it's easier to braid in than I thought, I tried an english braid down my back, a side braid, and a french braid down my back. With this amount of practice I was able to work on getting the paranda to show on the outside of the braid for most of the braid, by hanging on to my fingersetting and finding the paranda in my hair, pulling it to the back of my braid, the wrapping it around the outside to the front when I braid that bump. Repeat repeat repeat. I'm going to try to do it before work tomorrow and wear the braid down. I'd like to work on making complex tassels for the ends, I have a fabulous book somewhere on tassel making called Tassel Making by Anna Crutchley, who seems to be the tassel lady. I was thinking I could make the ends of the paranda at the bottom of the braid come together, either by tying or by keeping them in loops to begin with, and attach tassels after the braiding is over to avoid hassle. I like the Indian tassels but they don't look sturdy or as lush and complex as tassles I've made for belly dancing or light pulls, so I'm thinking I could do better. If I pull this off I'll work on the picture thing. I know it's bad form to never post pics, I don't have someone to take them and the whole cord and camera thing is hard to keep together. And the resizing I'm dreaming of an I phone and hoping that would make this easier Boy did I have a heck of a time finding the paranda thread, I can't seem to find my subscribed threads in this new format and searching for "show me" or Paranda was no help. I finally found it through another short thread. BTW the ends do stick out, my killer taper helps some, I'm thinking of trying some coconut oil on that, in the summer I can use aloe vera but here in kansas in the winter that will just suck all the moisture out of my hair. The search function doesn't work well for me either. If you're looking for a particular thread, or threads on a topic, it's best to type 'long hair community [plus whatever it is you're looking for]' into google. You'll get the best results this way. I can't wait until you do post pictures. Your tassle idea sounds wonderful. I sometimes use coconut oil to kind of stick the ends together, if that makes any sense. Got my SIL hooked on these. Sisi33 gave me two parandas parandi? Had to share the contrasting yellow one. I wore this the other day in a french braided bun. They are from the winter swap! I'm late to the game. Saw the thread before and thought I wouldn't need it, as I never braid. But after all these awesome pictures from winter swap I'm all tempted. This is my first attempt. Making the paranda was easy, braiding it in was hard as I'm not very skilled. The braided bun felt awesome, though. Usually my hair is so slippery I can't get a secure bun, but the yarn's friction made it very solid. The color is actually bright burgundy and I used only 8 instead of 10 in each bunch. I'm glad about that. Any thicker I wouldn't have hair pins long enough to hold the bun. Loving everyones braids! I had to see if parandi could be used for other styles of braids. I absolutely love them I need to find a better material than yarn to make them out of - embroidery floss maybe? I would think that a differently-textured yarn would change the rag doll effect. As would different colors, and, of course, making a bun. A couple people asked about wool fiber not wool as in British for any yarn and drying. I used to wear wool roving dreads and they sucked the oil out of my hair so quickly. Anyone have experience with silk? I am curious too! I feel that yarn really doesn't do it for me. I was wondering about ribbons.. I am always looking for the right yarn but have not found it yet. Acrylic is gross to me.. What about a ribbon yarn? I have one I made out of ribbon yarn. I also used some lightweight fingering superwash merino wool in a few parandi. They work well and I haven't noticed any dryness. Oh yes there is an amazing local yarn shop here in town :o Its expensive so I have not gone there but I definitely will. I may have to revisit them though Here is little one in her brand new pink paranda, made from embroidery floss, its finer and silkier than wool or yarn and in her fine hair I think its worked really well. I'm with you on the "raggedy ann" ends. I've worn yarn parandas around the house, and love that the acrylic yarn grabs my slippery hair, but haven't worn it out. My sides are too short to reach the back. I wonder if narrow ribbons would work? I have a spool of shimmery, transparent ribbon that I'm going to experiment with. It usually takes me several tries to get the paranda started in the braid, so we'll see how long my patience lasts. Jeleebaby, your LO has beautiful hair! Thanks for posting that! I'd love to see it! I do like the ends better I found the floss easy to work with, but then LO has very fine sleek hair so the floss was actually a less slippery texture than I'm used to braiding in her. I prefer the look of the floss. Embroidery floss I made one with satin ribbon, but it's hard to work with, and my straight slippery hair likes to slide right out. I have a TON of embroidery floss at home, definitely giving this a try tonight! Zabeth, I don't like acrylic yarn at all. The feel is very different and it doesn't have that velcroe-ish tendency like acrylic. The texture of acrylic yarn actually makes me shudder. I spritz my hair as I braid it with diluted AVG. When I get to the ends I actually saturate the hair, then twist it a bit as I go to "tuck" the ends under. I made a tutorial but I didn't get any close up shots so you can see what I am doing on the ends. I had no zoom ability because the camera was unmanned. The colours go so well with your hair! I have to try this! I am very angry with myself for not reading this thread sooner :justy: I'm seeing this 6 months later than you! I love this so much. I can't wait to try it. To the fabric store! I have a bunch that someone gave me because they know I like to crochet and knit, and I took it because I knew they felt really happy about being able to give it to me. Now I feel obligated to use it, but ick! I just hate working with it. Ah yes, I'd forgotten about cotton yarn. As it turns out, I have to make a trip to the yarn store somewhat soon, maybe I'll consider making some extra purchases. Thanks for the idea! I went an bought some cotton yarn. I tried to stay away from acrylic, but I saw wool. Also, where are folks finding Spaghetti yarn? I looked at the dollar store as some have mentioned they found it there. But mine didn't have it. I didn't see any at Joann Fabrics or Michaels either. The color combos are amazing! You should be very proud of this picture! Just read through this entire thread! Wish I'd seen it sooner However, I will be in town tomorrow and will be stocking up on yarn, ribbons, and tassels. I never wear my hair down when I'm out, but I think a paranda with some awesome tassels would convince me to try it. These are all looking amazing! Unfortunately, I have a paranda problem, and it's the same one I've had for years- my ends, seemingly no matter the length to my knees when I was a child, the first time someone tried a paranda in my hair, just grazing waist now or my cut blunt with no layers, heavily layered V cut, U cut, you name it when it comes to the bottom two or three inches of braiding, my hair simply 'bursts' out of the braid, poking out in great ol' chunks and ruining my lovely P-Braids. It's not a technique issue, as I had a friend in school who's mother was punjabi and wore a paranda in her hair almost daily, and as now, she simply could not get my ends to stay in. I've tried thick ones, thin ones, and even binding my ends to the paranda before braiding, and nothing helps, I still end up with pokey out ends! Hoping that perhaps someone here has also experienced this and has a solution, because I've just today made a lovely one out of gorgeous banana silk yarn, and would love to be able to wear it! ETA- The growing list of things I've tried to reign in my ends! I made a little crochet flower with the leftover yarn to put at the top of the paranda. Not sure if I'm pleased with it, but it makes it a lot easier to begin the braid. Please excuse the messy hair. Kaydana- Thats a great idea. I really like how it looks with the flower in the middle of the bun. The flower at the top is a brilliant idea! I don't have my pictures online, and I'm too lazy to get a photo bucket right now, so I don't have pics, but yesterday I made my first 2 parandis. One is blue and white, the other is fuchsia and purple, and I love them! My hair is to my hips, and with the parandi it's to classic. The bun is the size of the back of my head, and I found my new favorite hairstyle. I was getting damage from tying off the end of my braid, now I can keep it braided with no elastics on it, and the bun is crazy secure so I can just throw it up when I need it out of the way. I love it because it's like strands of embroidery floss loosly joined together. Even if it frays, it'll be beautiful. It is acrylic, so for those of you who hate acrylic, you won't like it. I'm going to make some smaller ones for half-ups. I really love that flower idea too! It makes me want to try a Celtic knot at the top of one I make, just to see how it works as I wrap my braid around it. As long as the strands are separated into 3 even sections, pretty much anything can be done at the top. Question: How are some of you tying off the end? I basically took a few strands, looped them around the tassel, then tucked it in the loop from the top. I figured that's how a few of you did it, but it's easy on me. Here's my pics. I really love how I haven't needed to use a single bobby pin. I usually struggle with mine slipping out because there's virtually nothing there to keep it in place. I also have layers, which you can see if you look closely. A few do stick out, but I also just trimmed my hair. Tapers hold in better, but I hate the feel once they start "fairy-tailing" as I call it. Tail is intended. I used some extra white recycled sari silk I had from making some necklaces awhile back. I actually like the texture and how it worked into my hair. It took up a good chunk of what I had left over. I used seven strands per section. In spite of my layers, I like how it worked with my hair to keep from having so many spikes. I know how many of you complain about salons, and this is my beef with them: the woman who cut my bob also shaved off the virgin hairs at my neck's nape. They've never stopped being thicker and more prominent since they grew out. I'm sure some people don't care, but I hate it so much. I've considered bleaching them, but undecided. I think it would actually look great in something more Chinese themed also considering it's also the Lunar New Year. LakeofGlass, that's beautiful! Where did you get the recycled sari silk? All of my saris are gone : A silk paranda would be wonderful. As for the little hairs, I have them too. I've trained them to clump together, so I get tiny ringlet curls there instead. It looks better and goes up easier with some taper, like real hair. Thanks for the advice. I think the holding part is going to be a breeze, I have experimented last night and this morning with different Paranda and it seems to HOLD. So that is a big relief. Now, for the aesthetics. I tried black with only a few rust strands, and it was too distracting. Then I did pure black. See pic below. I now have pure black in my hair, and I still don't think it looks that great with the ax. I do have some medium brown yarn that matches my hair pretty good, and I am guessing that this is the way to go. So that is what I am going to try next. Running out of time as I have to go to work. I think the black one in the picture looks good with that stick. It matches the handle part of the axe and provides a nice background of sorts for it. I think it helps the stick stand out better than if you had one that just matched your hair or that tried to pull in colors from the axe head more. Thank you so much for your opinion. I feel a little better about it now. I think my braid at the end of the yarn kind of fell apart too, so maybe that was part of my displeasure, I was kind of in a hurry and I didn't think it looked as great as it could. I know now that at least something like this will work. I have not worn my ax because it just slipped out of my short hair. I have a ravenscroft moon coming too, so I'm going to try to do the same for it. I planned on making a brown paranda anyway, so I may post both pics and let y'all actually see the difference and comment on that. I told you :rollin:. I think it looks good! I told you :rollin: I think you are both right. The brown I found is not quite dark enough to match well. See pic. It might look good with a lighter colored stick or fork, but for the ax, I think it's the black. Plus that bun looks wonky. Excuse the neck hairs that I am babying into growing I hope. Ok, I am now getting ready to go to the concert. This is my finished bun. It is a bit off center to the left but I made a ponytail in the center used an elastic so I think that was kind of why. I put the ax head on that side to maybe compensate a bit. I used a Ravenslair metal fork to secure it on the inside of the bun and a few bobby pins to catch the stray yarn at the end of the paranda. Honestly, how does it look? Am I ready to go? Or should I take it down and center the bun better? Chrissy and Damon explain how Vivo is helping to facilitate a gamechanging education platform for New Zealand hairstylists. What is your background in the hairdressing industry? This also involved organising photoshoots for seasonal collections and product launches in various locations around Europe. I then moved into a new role as Global Education Director overseeing all Education design and training for the Prestige and Lifestyle brands. I also have a wide and extensive background in photographic and live hairdressing competitions, recently taking a group of emerging stylists to Hair Expo in Sydney to perform a runway show featuring ten drag queens! Hairdressing is continually evolving, as new trends emerge they create the need for techniques and products that require inspiring education. Early in my own career, I was offered mentorship that really helped shape me, and I was lucky enough to experience first hand how education and support pushes you to be the best you can be. Now, I want to do the same for young stylists; helping a person progress in their career is a privilege and incredibly rewarding. Why is education the key to a successful hairdressing career? D: Education pushes you forward, it. C: Opportunities for growth are incredibly important. As stylists, we spend our days being creative for our clients, and we give so much of ourselves to do this. Education is a chance for stylists to fill their cups, to visualise their capabilities and to realise their full potential. C: There is a real skills shortage right now. We need strong training programmes in salons to grow apprentices to help secure the future of salons. We need to refocus, join together and secure a clearer career path for young stylists to want to take. Education is the key to that. C: Vivo recognises that our industry needs training programmes at all levels. Not only do we have a comprehensive training programme in place to welcome apprentices, we also have a world class range of training options available to stylists with varying levels of experience. We cover colouring, cutting, consultations, client experience, management tools, social media, career development and many more topics. All programs are available across NZ at no charge to our teams. What does Vivo offer its stylists that is unique in training and education? C: Vivo is unique on so many different. Teaching our teams to charge their clients what their skills are worth, providing regular and free education across multiple platforms, allowing freedom to be creative and giving us the tools to do that. The many opportunities for career advancement through education is a really big and bold initiative. We work with stylists to develop a career path and then support them to help make it happen. But most importantly, encouragement to become qualified with a side order of pride. Why did you want to become an Educator with Vivo? D: I firstly wanted to work for Vivo as I was impressed by the scale of the company. The career opportunities and support that Vivo offers to all staff. But mostly, the passion Vivo has for the hair and beauty industry moving forward. But it has been far from that. I have access to the directors daily. We share ideas, we are encouraged to grow. I have been offered many opportunities that you would not traditionally get with a boutique salon. I want to be the best version of myself I can be and I think Vivo genuinely wants that for me also, and for all of its stylists. Dry shampoo helps put off your next wash for a few days, keeping the scalp oil-free and hair full and bouncy. It also slows down colour fade, as swapping out shampoo for dry shampoo stretches the life of hair colour for days and weeks. Holding off on those lather, rinse, style and repeat routines by freshening your. It saves you precious time getting ready, prevents hair from becoming too dry by absorbing build-up on the scalp to allow oils more time to moisturise hair before being stripped away in the shower, gives a volume hit to your style by swelling strands, and boosts the roots. Bonus: it makes your hair smell great, as many dry shampoos offer a fresh, clean fragrance. As the name suggests, this finalist collection from the British Hairdressing Awards Artistic Team of the Year, is a collaboration of the renaissance era but with a rebellious hint of punk. The Ken Picton team wanted the images to be modern and current, with a Gucci-inspired feel. Each image has an explosion of colour and textures and were created to appear as stand-alone, individual renaissance art. Victoria James chose to fuse her favourite interior styles, including the minimalistic look of Scandi, boho vibes from the 70s era, and a colour palette inspired by the earthy warmth of the desert. When you enter the salon, you are greeted with archways that are carried through into the salon furniture designs, in rustic natural hues contrasting with white. With every little detail personally selected and designed by Victoria, salon standouts include the bespoke LED lighting incorporated into the retail area, a pure white linen waiting sofa, and the dried flower ceiling arrangement by Chloe Le Fleur that steals the show as a statement piece within the salon. Additional personal touches include the rattan foot stools at the basin area which tie in beautifully with the. This time, the salon chairs were paired with matte white bases to elevate the natural Scandi look. The matching footrests in white complete the effect of the styling station. Dusty pink highlights work well paired with the desert palette, as pink-toned gradients appear naturally in desert landscapes. Add white for contrast to make every element have a purpose. Stay away from anything black, blingy or dark. Use plants, such as cacti, paired with other succulents. If green is not your thing, opt for dried flower arrangements that incorporate dusty pink florals, dried ferns and Pampas grass. Here are some of the current favourites for Leaving a couple of tiny tendrils of hair loose around your face was the 90s cool-girl way of showing how casual and laidback you were. Originally from the 60s and then made edgy in the 90s, the look has recently been seen on the tresses of Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian West and Hailey Bieber amongst others, proving its return for the new decade. While it is a classic look, make no mistake, the flip is different from its previous iterations. Despite looking easy, this can be one of the most difficult looks to create because there is no hiding behind a head of straight hair. Hermiz Daniel, Style Director at Joey Scandizzo Salon, agrees that straight, sleek styles are making a massive comeback. Johnny Depp and Leonardo Dicaprio famously wore the earlier version of heartthrob hair during their youth, earning them a place in the heart of every teenage girl. Many colourists are welcoming the colour trend with open arms; the antithesis to subtle Balayage will bring customers in for more regular root touchups. Blondie Salon In Geelong, Australia, lies a salon that is a true feast for the eyes. Founder and director, Rebeccah Vivian, shares the story behind this stunning space blondie. Each detail is designed to be inviting and relaxing for our clients, with multiple, highly functional areas to receive treatment in absolute comfort. This includes a fun cactus garden, not only perfect to chill out in but an ideal photoshoot space. As you walk in the front entrance you are greeted by our hero artwork, Crown of Kahlo, a custom piece by Torquay artist Prudence Caroline. It oozes femininity and strength that draws your eye immediately. Most of the key pieces were personally chosen or designed. A draping partition curtain was installed to ensure client comfort and privacy at the basin, due to the large windows at the front of the salon. Relaxing spaces are in abundance; in particular, a striking black and white wallpapered wall with custom-pink Blondie neon, complete with super comfy blush leather chairs. It is also already a soughtafter space for photoshoots. This space inspires creativity, allowing our staff to reach their full potential to produce quality and innovative work. Our salon has spaces for collaboration with other staff, as well as spaces for individual reflection and focus when needed. Staff are encouraged to go outside for breaks. These are all contributors to mental health and wellbeing. The use of the colour pink was also a meaningful one; pink lessens feelings of irritation, discouragement and burden. This attention to detail gives our customers a sense of luxury, a nod to the fact that we care about their overall experience. Blondie Salon offers an experience we would love to indulge in ourselves. Chrissy is passionate about seeing emerging stylists become qualified. Apprentices will work alongside assigned stylists, as well as doing block learning, advancing through the requirements of their qualification test. This is grass roots education, right at the coal face. We are intent on getting them onto the floor and earning as hairdressers. Celebrating the uniqueness of New Zealand locals in the chair. Fashion Week experience and social media coaching. We recently joined them for a co- development photo shoot showcasing the quintessential beauty of New Zealanders and summer trends. I grew up in Thailand and moved to this beautiful country when I was One of my favourite memories is learning about the Kiwi culture in high school and eating a pie on my way to school on a cold morning! My favourite place in New Zealand is Queenstown. My favourite place in New Zealand is Pauanui. My family has a place there so I spent a lot of my childhood there. I wanted something fashionable, edgy, yet playful to bring out her natural beauty and personality. I grew up in Nelson. In a village called Wakefield, a wee drive south of Nelson. It was a country town with only a couple of shops. My favourite place in New Zealand is Golden Bay. Every year our family would go camping there and honestly, it just smells of the summer, swimming and no worries! My journey with the ID team has been full of growth, learnings and opportunities! I created this look for Mia to make her the best version of her! The tones throughout her hair enhance who she is. Using a deeper and more natural root gives richness and I added warmth with honey tones. From natural to created texture, nothing is better than a cool shag designed to enhance natural curls. I also love creating texture and movement in colour. I grew up in Porirua, Wellington and had the quintessential Kiwi childhood - running through the bush, building forts and playing with the neighbours till sundown. I grew up reading about the Maori mythology of the place and had vivid dreams about it as a child, so it always stood out as powerful and sacred. Lighter round the face to make her blue eyes pop and a mix of beautiful iridescent and gold tones. Balayage and blondes are my absolute passion, and of course, the Money Piece face framing to make the colour pop! I grew up in a rural area of Upper Hutt, Wellington. Cows and rabbits were my neighbours for the first couple of years. I used to love going for bike rides, swimming in the river and exploring the local area with my friends. My favourite place in NZ is. We seriously have it all, from beaches to bush walks and plenty of yummy places to eat. Seriously, what an opportunity. We have all grown so much since the beginning of the year. The ID team has been the highlight of my career so far. There is never a dull moment. Practice, practice, practice. Get out of your comfort zone and put yourself out there. Make mistakes and learn from them. Ends Santana is a surfer so she spends most days at the beach and I love the undone and lived-in vibe to this look. I grew up split between a beach and a farm. Being able to roam through sand dunes and swim made me feel so free as a kid. My favourite place in New Zealand is Matapouri - camping, swimming and laying in the sun! My journey with the I. Team has been a lot of nerves, a lot of work and through that, a lot of fun! Sofia, being a blonde, was cautious. Styling-wise, I stayed true to my love for lived-in waves. Summer accessories - avoid pearls and go for a little bit of tough or tortoiseshell. More minimal, less fuss 64 headway. Our IG this season is all about changing it up and looking forward to We hope you enjoy it and wish you a fantastic summer. Where did your passion for hairdressing originate? My passion for hair came from my family. I did work experience in his salon when I was 14 and I was hooked. Ironically, it was in this salon I first started using Fudge Professional! What does your role entail as Global Brand Ambassador for Fudge Professional and what have been your highlights so far? My role is really diverse. Hands-down the biggest highlight was heading up our latest campaign. What are you loving most about using the Fudge range? I love all of it! This paired with the gel toners means I get. For , one of my biggest sources of inspiration is Instagram. I love seeing work from passionate stylists worldwide and feel excited to be a part of such an incredible industry. Individuality is going to be big. Social media has given people the platform to create their own identity and the traditional way of trends filtering from catwalks is slowly diminishing. That said, I think hair is getting softer overall. I feel what matters most is the client and getting the best finished result possible. What do you wish you had known when you first started hairdressing that you know now? That everything was going to work out fine and relax. This makes me focus only on pushing to the next level. These are combined with pops of trending colour and styled immaculately with a polished, high-end feel. Do you love helping people look and feel fabulous? Plus, you can develop your talents with work in the fashion and beauty industry as an editorial stylist too. Face Off Stay Inspired Guest columnist and award-winning hairdresser, Michael Beel, shares his insights on the changing face of the hairdressing industry and how to keep your passion and inspiration alive michaelbeelhair. Social media has changed how we operate — some of it good and some of it not so good - but at the end of the day, the most important thing is the relationship, trust and creativity we have with our clients This industry is truly incredible. But the thing that inspires me today, tomorrow and will continue to do so into the next decade and also what makes me want to be the best. However my biggest source of inspiration is Instagram. Hairdressers are predominantly visual people and I follow designers, international hair and makeup artists, magazines, artists and people who have a cool vibe. To the majority of clients, we are the most fashionable person they know. This may help get you out of that creative rut and inspire you to push even further. Seeing that twinkle in their eye, shoulders back a little more, and head held higher once that cape gets taken off makes the long hours, stressful situations and sore feet worth it. With the turning of a new year and decade, we have to look not only outwards but also at ourselves and ask: am I doing enough for me? Am I doing. Am I doing enough for my staff? And am I doing enough for our industry? These are all big questions and you may not have the answers but surely a little inspiration can help guide you to be the best hairdresser you possibly can be. We all have a time frame of how long it took us to get where we are. Often, this is nowhere near reflected in the amount of time we invest in those who may one day run the business whilst we are away, or perhaps eventually take over. During that 8 years, you accumulated a wealth of knowledge and skills, failed, excelled and learnt a lot. With this in mind, how much time are you dedicating to upskilling a staff member or members to get to your level of expertise, or even better, so that you can look at an exit strategy or a growth strategy for ? You would not be considering 8 years of mentoring but proportionately what you are doing now is unlikely to be enough. With a new decade upon us, we recommend you consider your growth or exit strategy this summer and the subsequent training required for this to be a success. Even if this is the last thing you may be thinking of, sharing the responsibility of running the business will help you identify new ways of doing things and. We had a staff member who was a very talented artist outside of work hours. She subsequently illustrated and designed our Christmas packaging and to this day, the motif is still used. She was a key member of staff who was part of our marketing team. If we had not given her the job of our holiday season planning, we would never have discovered her additional talent. Unfortunately, a lot of salon owners are not coaching anyone to replace them or have the time to discover hidden talents. Owners are generally the biggest earners for the business and feel they cannot step off the floor because this will affect their bottom line. The catch 22 is that to have a great exit strategy you must have a positive growth strategy. To have a growing business you must have fully engaged staff who you have coached to be even better than you. Too many salon owners retire by simply closing their doors and leaving the industry. Others may sell the salon but at much less than they had anticipated, or worse, they sell the salon and within a couple of years the new owner goes under and that amazing business has disappeared. I am not encouraging you to sell but it is always good to be thinking of the future, training staff to be as amazing as you are and always, always a good idea to be growing your business. The creative fuses fashion trends direct from the catwalks over the last 12 months. What makes the collection interesting is the eclectic range of cuts, colours and style silhouettes - all of which 84 headway. This is contrasted with strong, tailored styling and accessories, juxtaposed with intricate lacing, ripples and ruffles, evoking feelings of romance, sophistication and self-confidence. The event had all the sparkle of a 20s-style gala, with a contemporary twist of spectacular aerial dancing. The night was hosted by Rodney Wayne CEO Julie Evans and supported by special guest speaker, Simone Anderson, who set the tone with a truly inspirational personal story about the value of bringing out the best in yourself and others. Hair to Celebrate The night was all about celebrating the best, with a ceremony which saw Salon of the Year go to the dedicated and expert team at Rodney Wayne Albany in Auckland. Botany, also based in Auckland. A huge congratulations to all the amazing finalists, who demonstrated outstanding effort as always. From Ellie, with a globalised colour and strong, punchy cut with daring lashskimming fringe think Cleopatra with a hint of rock chic ; through to Ella where her personal style inspired the subtle definition of blonde, with emphasis on a modern, natural glow and effortlesslooking waves. Inspiring looks, all achieved using the highest quality hair care products to produce a stunning outcome. We share some of the popular looks from the stage to the studio. Rapper and music executive, Mr Shawn Carter, turned 50 in December and from what we can see, he has a let-it-dowhatever-it-wants attitude to his hair, and quite possibly his life. His artfully twisted fro looks as effortless as his music. Pop star Justin Bieber has had a whole lot of hair transformations but none as great as his recent restyle for his wedding to haileybieber. Heavy metaller James Hetfield — Metallica co-founder, song writer, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist — would have to be one of the most famous heads of hair in metal. His signature crop is back doing the rounds this summer with a new and tours planned. All-rounder Ed Sheeran has embraced every in the last decade and is one of the most popular on the planet. The 90s saw directors rise to be almost on the same stage as the video-made rock stars. The two trends were polarised but are equally influential today. From the 70s, 80s, 90s, and now we farewell the s. This is the decade that will be known as the transformative decade. The hierarchy of genres was turned on its head because of new ways to engage our ears and therefore influence our tastes. Taylor, Gaga and Bieber replaced Michael, Bowie and Prince as we sadly farewelled some of our most loved and controversial artists for a new deity. Whatever the next decade brings, it is without a doubt that music and fashion will be intertwined and the look will be instant and hugely influential as it has always been. The great rock and roll swindle is alive and well. Be irresponsible. Be disrespectful. Be everything this society hates. Not perhaps to the music, though of course the lyrics were unforgettable due to the sheer anarchy of them, but it is the look, the attitude, the mood that we conjure up in our minds. Malcolm McLaren, manager and promoter of the New York Dolls and then the Sex Pistols, became an impresario and famous, not just for his genius marketing, but also for his keen eye for trends. He recognised and encouraged the need for a new protest style for the s and is perhaps one of the best examples of how music, fashion and attitude became one. Westwood has said the music did not influence her design but it was her own beliefs that she was trying to embody with her clothes. She created a fashion statement which blurred the lines between fashion, culture and music. The punk movement was launched just as the age of video was about to go mainstream. The impact of being able to watch, rather than read about, our musical heroes revolutionised the music culture. The success of artists such as Madonna, Adam Ant, Michael Jackson and Duran Duran owed as much to their look as it did to their musical talent. Once again, the lines became blurred between who was the driving force behind the success of a new. In accepting their awards many shared their love of the industry and their supportive teams and clients. The apprentice must show commitment to their training and the desire to improve in all areas. Judges said winner Vienna Moore, chosen from four regional winners across New Zealand, is a great example of a hardworking apprentice. And of course, the support of our family, friends and our loyal clients. Thank you for the opportunity of an event like this to attend. This award celebrates a beauty business that is clearly excelling and achieves phenomenal results in their overall business numbers and growth. I am beyond grateful and still a little shocked about our win. A big thank you to my amazing clients for their loyalty and support - without them we would be nothing. Thanks to Holly my staff member, my suppliers, my friends and family for always having my back, and to my daughter, Callie, for being my biggest cheerleader! Kylie Hayes took home four awards. Her parents, Denise and Murray McBeth, used the money she had saved for her business to create this scholarship. We are all winners in the end. I dedicate this award to all the hardworking mothers of our industry and incredible husbands that support us on our journey. Cute ponytail hairstyles like this are made from loosened, relaxed boho braids. From beach to bridal, this hairstyle is a fit for multiple occasions. Hidden bobby pins help hold a slack style like this together throughout the day. A high ponytail calls for unexpected twists at the crown. Face framing fringe works very well with a braided pony like this. A statement ponytail updo involves killer details. You can easily spice up an ordinary style by making it into a fishtail braid with dozens of tiny strands. Keep it polished in the front by slicking your hair back with a comb as you pull and position it into a ponytail. Cute ponytails are totally achievable when you use a sectioned layering technique. The magic to nailing this look is to work on your hair updo one section at a time. Learn to have fun with your pony braid! The best thing about the macrame braid is its pretty knotted effect. Letting it fall into a ponytail at the nape of the neck keeps this style edgy and playful. The trick to pulling off a fishtail braid like this is making it totally undone from the outside. Try pulling carefully at each loop, and leave some pieces hanging loose on the sides. A braid like this is best done with second-day hair. You can work a braid ponytail into a sleek updo with this idea. Start with three sections, dutch braid the sides and French braid the front of your hair separately. Pull the braids along with the rest of your hair into a sleek pony once you get to the crown of your head. Take a stress-free approach to a side Dutch braid. Spray your tresses with a sea salt spray and let your hair air dry to capture the most natural effect. For a more controlled take on the braiding game, focus on braiding small rows from the hairline towards the crown. Braid only the front half of your hair and leave the back unbraided for a variety of textures and a more interesting final look. Curly hair and braids never looked better! Start with a Dutch braid across the top of your head and feed it into a side ponytail. The coolest thing you can do to beautifully colored hair is play around with sexy styles. Try a one-side braid all the way down the length of your hair and pull it with the rest of your hair into a casual ponytail. Any ponytail is instantly polished with a delicate braid incorporated into it. A braided ponytail can totally be a refined hairstyle. For example, this one is a totally unique and impressive updo you can wear to any formal occasion. Sometimes a challenge is exciting! Instead of rolling out of bed and twisting your hair into the same old tired braid, explore different options. Get the Tutorial from Bebexo! This braid is carefully constructed and leads into a sleek, low ponytail. Just gently pull apart the tight, newly-created braid and allow it to look undone. Messy braids are all the rage these days — totally bohemian chic. Get the Tutorial from Marina McAvoy!
