Clarence Larson: only ORNL director to be AEC commissioner (As published in The Oak Ridger’s Historically Speaking column on September 19, 2016) Carolyn Krause brings us insights into Clarence Larson, a capable and key contractor leader of the early Union Carbide days in Oak Ridge. … The only director and employee of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to become a commissioner on the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) was Clarence Edward Larson. After serving as director of the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant starting in 1948, he moved to ORNL in 1950 when he was appointed director there by the AEC operating contractor, Carbide and Carbon Chemical Division, Union Carbide Corporation, later to become the Union Carbide Nuclear Division. He remained ORNL director until 1955. Larson replaced Nelson “Bunny” Rucker as ORNL director. As associate director Alvin Weinberg “also decided that Bunny Rucker really should be replaced by a person with more technical understanding of nuclear energy, a view with which Clark Center (Union Carbide Nuclear Division president) concurred. As a result, Clark appointed Clarence Larson director of ORNL, and I became research director.” (Source: Weinberg’s “The First Nuclear Era.”) A native of Minnesota who completed undergraduate work in chemistry and chemical engineering at the University of Minnesota, he received his Ph.D. degree in biochemistry in 1937 from the University of California at Berkeley, where he studied blood clotting. While a graduate student, he experimented with cyclotron-produced isotopes obtained from cyclotron inventor Ernest O. Lawrence. In 1937 Larson joined the College of the Pacific’s chemistry department and later became its chairman. -

Memorial Tributes: Volume 9 CLARENCE EDWARD LARSON 189 CLARENCE EDWARD LARSON 1901–1999 BY ALVIN M. WEINBERG CLARENCE EDWARD LARSON died of pneumonia at the age of eight-nine on February 15, 1999. Larson was one of the original scientists whose life was largely devoted to nuclear energy. I first encountered Clarence Larson in 1945, when I moved from the Chicago Manhattan Project to the X-10 plutonium plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Clarence, a chemist, had been a member of Ernest Lawrence's team that designed, built, and supervised the operation of the Y-12 electromagnetic U-235 separation plant. The core of the Hiroshima bomb was almost entirely made of U-235 that had been separated at the Y-12 plant. Clarence Larson, as the senior chemist on the Y-12 team, contributed massively to the success of the laborious, atom-by-atom separation of the fissile core of the Hiroshima bomb. My sister and brother-in-law, Fay and Irving Goleman, had been colleagues and friends of Clarence and his first wife, Jerry, at the College of the Pacific in Stockton, California. Clarence had been the chairman of the Chemistry Department at the College of the Pacific from 1939 to 1942, when he joined Lawrence's team. So when I arrived in Oak Ridge in May of 1945, I had already been told to look up the Larsons. Clarence, while a graduate student in biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, had studied the clotting of blood. -

HOLMEN AUGUST 1973 Preface The conference held at Skovde, 12-15 June 1973, has been recognized as number 8 in a series of international meetings with electromagnetic isotope separation (EMIS) as the common theme. The scientific contents, however, have changed markedly with time. Whereas mass spectrometry formed an essential part of the first conference (Harwell 1955), the next one (Amsterdam 1957) confronted the electromagnetic process with other methods of isotope separation, and the Vienna symposium in 1960 dealt rather exclusively with radioisotope separation. All aspects of EMIS were covered at Orsay (1962), including its application to solid state research as a novel feature. The same was true of the Aarhus meeting in 1965, where on- line radioisotope separation first appeared on the program. Ey that time the field was becoming inconveniently extensive, largely because of the rapid growth of ion physics, that is, the application of mass separators and other low energy ion accelerators to atomic and solid state problems. Consequently, in 196*7 this part was given a conference of its own at Chalk River, immediately following the 6th EMIS conference at Asilomar. This splitting up according to type of application, however, seemed to cause some confusion among machine people. For the next conference (Marburg 1970) a new approach was tried, concentrating on apparatus and methods and stressing in particular the technical problems common to classical separa- tion work, ion physics research (whether using mass discrimination or not) and radioisotope separation. -
