  • TRUST, but VERIFY: WHY the BLOCKCHAIN NEEDS the LAW Kevin Werbach†
TRUST, BUT VERIFY: WHY THE BLOCKCHAIN NEEDS THE LAW Kevin Werbach† ABSTRACT The blockchain could be the most consequential development in information technology since the Internet. Created to support the Bitcoin digital currency, the blockchain is actually something deeper: a novel solution to the age-old human problem of trust. Its potential is extraordinary. Yet, this approach may not promote trust at all without effective governance. Wholly divorced from legal enforcement, blockchain-based systems may be counterproductive or even dangerous. And they are less insulated from the law’s reach than it seems. The central question is not how to regulate blockchains but how blockchains regulate. They may supplement, complement, or substitute for legal enforcement. Excessive or premature application of rigid legal obligations will stymie innovation and forego opportunities to leverage technology to achieve public policy objectives. Blockchain developers and legal institutions can work together. Each must recognize the unique affordances of the other system. • Devotion to the Virgin Mary
Christianity Devotion to the Virgin Mary Devotion to the Virgin Mary Summary: Many of the global expressions of devotion to Jesus’s mother, the Virgin Mary, include shrines across the world. For American and particularly Hispanic Catholics, special reverence is often afforded to the Virgin of Guadelupe, Mary’s manifestation as an indigenous Madonna on the hill of Tepeyac in Mexico, who is now considered Patroness of all the Americas. From all over the world, immigrants to the United States have brought with them their devotion to the Virgin Mary under her many names and in her many local forms. From Poland has come devotion to Our Lady of Czestochowa, whether at a local church in Madison, Illinois or in a large urban parish in one of Chicago’s Polish Catholic neighborhoods. Those who fled from Cuba built the shrine of Our Lady of Charity, the patroness and protector of Cuba, overlooking the sea in Miami. She stands in a beautiful, large, triangular shrine, built to replicate the mantle under which she gathers and protects her children. From southern Italy have come regional and local Madonnas, such as Madonna del Carmine in what was formerly the Italian Harlem area of New York City. For many years, this “Madonna of 115th Street” held the Italian community together as it gained its footing in America. These and many other manifestations of the Virgin Mary are gathered together in the immense space of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. As early as 1846, Mary was acclaimed patroness of the United States.

With this in mind, we celebrated Mass on August 7, the date of the 14th anniversary of her passing. Also in response to the call she made us to visit the sites of Marian apparitions, in order to prepare our souls, and to receive the graces and gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Betania Foundation went on a pilgrimage to Guanare, a city in the plains of Venezuela, to honor Our Lady of Coromoto, its patroness. Her festivity is on September 8th, a day that commemorates her apparition to an Indian, leaving him her beautiful image, which is a living manifestation of the Virgin.
