MGA Register Run Sunday 22nd November

Disappointingly, no one came forward to do a write-up. It shouldn’t be expected that your run organiser also take care of that.

AHC WA – MG ZT/ 75 owners “sub-group” – founded in 2019! Brian Jarvis purchased a MG ZT 190+ for his road car, and Dale Clifford purchased a MG ZT 160 (1.8L 4 cyl. Turbo UK private import) to add to his collection. “Rover” Bill owns a , as part of his collection. All are good and represent the last “British” Rovers and MGs. You get a lot of bang for your buck!

The red MG ZT left is the 2002 pre-facelift model with the separate lights.

10

The MG ZT left is the post facelift 2004 model with the more

“Euro- bland?” combined lights.

11

In 2001, three years after the launch of the Rover 75 and less than a year after the demerger of MG Rover from BMW, the MG ZT and MG ZT-T were launched. During the car’s development, the models were codenamed X10 and X11 for the saloon estate versions respectively. The basic shape and styling of the MG ZT remained the same as for the Rover but with changes to the front bumper, now with an integrated grille, and detailed alterations including colour coding of the waistline, a new boot lid plinth and different alloy wheels and tyre sizes. The interior featured revised seats and dashboard treatment, with new instrument faces. Engineering changes ranged from, upgraded suspension and brakes to revised engine tuning (from the Rover 75) for the petrol models, Development of the MG ZT was headed by Rob Oldaker, Product Development Director, with styling changes undertaken by Peter Stevens, who was previously responsible for the styling of the McLaren F1 and X180 version of the . The MG ZT only had one trim level, though the standard car could be ordered with “Plus” pack. MG ZT models were named after engine unit power output, ie; a 160ps V6 model was an MG ZT 160, and a 190ps V6 model with a “Plus” pack was an MG ZT 190+.

A total of only 27,149 MG ZTs were produced, all in the Plant, Birmingham between the years of 2001 (3 years after the launch of the Rover 75, and a year after the sale of MG Rover by BMW to the British “Phoenix Consortium”), and May 2005 (when MG Rover went bankrupt and were purchased by China’s (now SAIC). It should be noted that this number includes all ZT estate models and the MG ZT 120 (1.8L 4 cyl), MG ZT 160 (early cars detuned V6, then 1.8L turbo 4 cyl), MG ZT 220 S (which included a supercharger engineered by the Perth “Sprintex company) and all the 2L BMW turbo diesel powered models. All of the diesels, the 120, and the 160 were not released in Australia. It has been stated on Keith Adams Austin-Rover web-site (aronline.co.uk) that a total of 2324 rover 75s AND MG ZTs were sold in Australia (could include NZ, too?). These relatively low numbers are probably the result of the “MG ZT 180 Plus” costing A$62,000 new in 2003. The MG ZT 260 (4.6L Ford V8 powered, rear wheel drive) sold new for A$90,000! The original MG ZT 190 was only available with 5-speed manual transmissions and is powered by a 2.5L V6 quad cam 24 valve engine producing 187 bhp and reaching 0-100 km/hr in 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 140mph (225km/hr). The ZT 160 (1800cc turbo, manual only) and 180 (5-speed auto only) had performance figures of 8.5/8.9 seconds 0 -100km/hr, and top speeds of 212/216 km/hr, respectively. When the MG name and designs were sold to SAIC, and the Rover name to Ford, “Phoenix” MG Rover had already planned a supercharged V8 MG ZT X 385, and a ZT / 75 Coupe, the latter mocked up in fibreglass in 2005 and externally looked remarkably like the Monaro CV8. These were never produced.

12

The “timber” finish proposed should appeal to AH 3000 Mk 3 drivers?

13

There are supposedly only 2 V8 Rover 75s in Australia. One was for sale recently for $29,000

SAIC continued to produce the Rover 75 and MG ZT as a MG 7 and a MG 7Z from 2007 for the China, UK, and other markets.

State Motorkhana Round 4 – Tiger Kart Club

The final round for the year took place on Sunday 29th November at Tiger Kart Club. A big field of competitors saw 38 drivers take part across 5 categories. A nice mix of cars as usual from the specials, Mokes, some bigger sedans and the class B cars which include our MGs.

Lots of familiar faces and cars took part on what was a perfect day. Not too hot, not too sunny, but a little windy with the markers getting blown over regularly. Some new circuits this time proved a challenge wit plenty of wrong ways across the field including yours truly in my trusty MGF on the Double Hat circuit. My fellow MG drivers Sarah Fry in the green MGB and Peter Fry in the white MGB Gt managed to avoid wrong way penalties however, so well done to them.

The circuits were fast and great fun, especially the Mothballs and Spiro Slalom. With our team taking part in the club only runs, we didn’t participate in the reverse challenges, which meant we got to do the Spiro Slalom four times. Videos of all three of us in action have been posted to the MGCCWA Facebook page. Well worth checking out.

We were entertained by the antics of Fin Holland and Brent Matthews in the crazy drifting Toyota Corolla as well as Duane Joubert and John Ludlam in their Escorts, as usual cocking a wheel off the ground as they drifted around the courses. Another interesting car was a new Kia Stinger, driven by Layne Smaalen. The speed with which it took off and the way it could get the back end out were fun to watch, all while the stealthy quiet V6 made us wonder if it was in fact an electric vehicle. The Turben and AV2 specials posted some blindingly quick times, as did Peter Bergman in his MX5, showing us how it should be done in an open roadster.

Following the final runs, Fin entertained us again, this time in his Lexus V8, drifting around the Double Hat circuit as everyone mucked in to help pack up the equipment. We then gathered for a couple of drinks to celebrate the end of the season before heading home after an enjoyable day. Peter McGrath

MIDWEEK RUN – THURSDAY 3RD DECEMBER

There was a great turn-out of mainly British classic sports cars for the last Midweek Run of 2020 at Mundaring. MGs, Austin Healeys, Triumphs and sundry other cars met early for a brisk and entertaining 65km drive through forest and orchard country in the scenic Perth hills. Our destination was Avocados Café on the Canning River in Kelmscott and all enjoyed the winding route via Mundaring Weir Rd, the Bickley Valley, Araluen and Churchman Brook. The weather gods were kind to us and the drive was held in glorious morning sunshine, the last Club run in a challenging 2020 year! Tony Ford

Vintage Stampede Hillclimb – Saturday 5th December 2020

The Vintage Club organised the Vintage Stampede Hill Climb at Jack’s Hill followed by a regularity circuit event at Barbagallo Raceway for Saturday 5th December. It was great to get these events added quite late to calendar.

Peter Fry in his MGB roadster and me in my MGF took part in the Hill Climb along with a big field with 32 other eager drivers. Some great cars and plenty of familiar faces from the Motorkhana series, the TSOA Autokhanas and some regular hill climbers included plenty of British cars with Triumphs, Austin Healeys, Westfields, Caterhams, Ford Escorts and Cortinas and of course our MGs, joined by a third MG driven by Lenard Kidd.

We had a group sighting run to familiarise ourselves with the circuit, followed by a solo practice run and a further three timed runs. I felt like I was getting quicker on each run and really enjoyed the longer circuit set up this time, although ’I m not sure the clutch on the MGF enjoyed the inclined start.

18

The fastest times were posted by a Westfield driven by Brent Matthews and Porsche 911 driven by John Webb, both breaking the 48 second barrier with an Escort RS driven by Bevan Cook hitting the low 48s too. These three were a clear 3 seconds faster than the next quickest car. Peter, Lenard and I were towards the back of the field posting best times of 61.05 for Peter Fry, 69.73 for Lenard and 61.94 for me. Peter’s times all within 1.1 seconds of each other, with mine being within 1.3 seconds of each other.

Overall, Peter finished 28th, with me in 31st.

Well done to the VSCCWA for organising a brilliant event and to our fellow drivers for supporting it so well.

I had other commitments so was unable to take part in the Regularity Event following lunch at the Barbagallo circuit. Peter Fry did take part though along with Rami Brass and Dennis Fair.

WACKY RACES with Peter McGrath

Welcome to the first Wacky Races for 2021. After a challenging but rewarding 2020, we head into a new year looking forward to the return of competition events that were cancelled in 2020. We were lucky enough here in WA to still be able to compete in Motorkhanas, Autokhanas and Hill Climbs, with a regularity event thrown in right at the end in December. 2021 should see the return of Northam and Albany Round the Houses. I’ll keep you informed as more information becomes available. Along with Peter Fry, I took part in the Vintage Stampede Hill Climb at Jacks Hill on 5th December, Peter also took part in the Regularity at Barbagallo later the same day (see separate articles).

Post submission of this article (early deadline due to Christmas) there are two scheduled competition events due to take place. The WRX club of WA have arranged a track day at Barbagallo in the morning of Sunday 20th December and the Tarmac Sportz series organised by the WA Sporting Car Club wraps up later that same day with an evening Sprint Event.

Congratulations to our Competition winners for 2020, with the ever-quick Sarah Fry picking up both the Ladies Champion and Club Champion trophies. Sarah is our most active competitive driver and fully deserves both awards. It was also fun to see Peter Fry and Bruce Youngberg awarded joint winners of the Intermediate Champion (with a trophy apiece). They were jostling all year with both having leads at various stages in the points tally. Well done gents, great to see you take part in so many events. The 2021 points are already being tallied with the season starting from SMC Round 4 on 29/11/20 and closing off in November 2021.

The draft events calendar has been published for 2021 with dates provisionally added for competition events. I expect there to be many changes, which is the norm most years as dates are locked in by the organising clubs. We’ll try to keep on top of these

changes and give plenty of notice. Emails will be sent out to promote each event closer to the planned dates. Coming up in 2021:

 Sunday 21st February - TSOA Midvale Autokhana (further rounds expected at Coogee and Midvale later in the year).

 Full season of 5 rounds of the State Motorkhana (dates and venues still to be confirmed).

20

 Tarmac Sportz series with a mixture of Hill Climbs, Point2Points and Sprints throughout the year.

 The Return of The Northam Flying 50 and Albany Classic regularity round the houses.

 Hill climbs at Jack’s Hill and hopefully in Northam and Albany too.

It was great to attend the Motorkhana WA end of year breakfast and awards presentation on Sunday 13th December at East Fremantle Yacht Club. Well done to the Mini Car Club for organising a brilliant breakfast at an excellent venue. Our club picked up the Club award again, which is always rewarding. Well done to our Motorkhana drivers Sarah Fry, Peter Fry, Tony Ford, Bruce Youngberg and yours truly for taking part and forming a team at each round. New team members are always welcome, so we encourage your participation in 2021. Here’s to a rapid and fun January and hopefully a return to a full competition calendar for 2021

WOOHOO !! Congrats guys, well done

The financial books for the period 2019 – 2020 for the MGCC of WA (inc.) are now available to be audited. Membership is the most important revenue for the MGCC with receipts of $21493.50 for the past financial period – budget for next year is $19,000.00 due to a rebate on fees because of the reduction in activities, due to the Covid19 virus By Term Deposit Saving some of our revenue we were able to bring in an annual interest of $572.04 CAMS affiliation cost $1270.00 for the period Rental and maintenance of Club Rooms cost $5343.21 Publication of the monthly Octagon magazine incurred a cost of $2133.12 The advertising in the Octagon and on the club website, generated $185.00 for the period

22

In the Budget we allowed for an expenditure of $500.00 for Competition which gave the Competition Secretaries financial support for all of their events., however competition had an overall break even. The task of running the monthly meeting catering, stocking the fridge and ensuring we make a small surplus on drinks, plus the “gold Coin” donation for the suppers has assisted in offsetting the cost and helped balance the budget. However we still had a net cost for Refreshments of $477.27 . However, the monthly raffles made a surplus of $891.60, so offset this cost. The continual update of our Library cost just $74.73 this year. Regalia Stock at 30 June 2020 was valued at $6592.00 and this is a decrease from last year of $834.94, and is not included in the YTD balance above. We made a surplus on Regalia of $644.00

A full financial report has been presented to the President & Committee at the July Committee Meeting. A copy of the 2019/20 Financials will be available to be viewed by floor members at the AGM in December 2020 Moved: Chris Hart Seconded: Val Goff that the following accounts be approved for payment: Snap Print – December Octagon $193.92, Allsports Trophies – Club Championship Awards $397.70, A J Gallagher – Office Bearers Liability Insurance $ 563.75, Ian Campbell for Perth Web Hosting – Domain Transfer $27.45, Doug Bush – Sanitiser $11.99, A Mulcahy – Raffle Prizes $99.00 & C Hardie - Supper $269.33 CARRIED

The committee agreed and has been approved. Membership report: Richard advised that memberships year to date total 291. This compares to 281 same time last year, This is a very encouraging trend, particularly as it has been a year of the Covid 19 and it’s challenges. Richard had 1 new nominated for membership Steve Collins & Veronica West 1978 Green MGB GT Moved by Richard Gusterson, Seconded Terry Banton: That these applications be accepted. CARRIED Competition: Peter advised it’s been a very challenging year, we still managed to get in 4 rounds of motorkhana, 4 rounds of autokhana, 6 tarmac events, very lucky in WA to be able to take part in them. We had people take part in motorkhana, autokhana, and all the hillclimbs. Two events left for the year Sunday 20th December Barbagallo has 2 events Tarmac Sportz round 12 & WRX Track day. That’s all for this year, hopefully back to normal next year – stay tuned.

Social Report: Tony advised it’s been a very disrupted year, socially, but we have managed to get out and about on social drives more often then I suspect most people in the world – we have been very fortunate in that aspect.

23

It is a shame that things like British Car Day Gingin , Moondyne Joe Festival Toodyay, and of course Northam & Albany around the houses had to be cancelled but towards the end of the year we have been able to do a few runs, more recently, last month MGA registery run which was well attended, thanks to Peter Hagarty for organising that. Last week, Thursday we had a midweek lunch run with the Austin Healy Club, relative short run from Mundaring through to Avacados Restaurant Kelmscott, all twisty bit, but think people enjoyed it. Coming up in January Thursday 14th January Midweek run organised by Tony & Eddy starting from Mundaring Sculpture Park, 90kms run Southern Chapter Run –Sunday 10th January leaving from Harvey Cheese South West Highway Wokalup to Austin Harvey Homestead previously owned by our Mrs Editor. Hopefully, Tuesday 19th January Nog & Natter whether it’s in the Club Room or have to hire hall again, remains to be seen. Hopefully, some of the restrictions have been lifted by then and we will be able to return to the Club rooms, we haven’t had a meeting in the Club rooms since March, been a long time. Just to make mention, through the good officers of our Treasurer/Building Maintenance Officer – Chris Hart , the City of Bayswater has recently finished painting the interior of the Club Rooms, they wanted to paint the internal face brick walls and we said no, we like the internal face brick and persuaded them to paint the inside of the toilets and kitchen and also the ceiling, so when we eventually get back to having meetings in the Club room, I’m sure you will be suitably impressed how sparkly it’s is. The Social calendar has been published in the December Octagon and published also again in January’s, I will not guarantee it will not change from time to time, but certainly I think we have lined up a number of social events for 2021 and hopefully we won’t have a second wave. Editors: Graham mention that they will be closing the January edition of the Octagon, early on the 19th of this month, as the printers will close down for the Christmas / New Year period, so, if you have any articles, photo’s, information, please send it through as soon as possible and just keep a note every time we send out the magazine, the closing date may change for different circumstances. Please keep sending through, any photographs of any runs or if you really want to put your hand up to help the committee or do an article, we are more than happy to help you. Moyra mention that this is last year (2021) that her and Graham will be doing the editors and asked if anyone is interested, to please step up as they have been doing it for 10 years and will not be doing it in 2022. Moyra said they are willing to help train anyone who is interested. Safety Fast Run: Terry advised the 2021 Safety Fast Run will be Friday 22nd , Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th October, another 3 day event with Friday evening will be nog n natter, Abbey Beach Resort Busselton. 24

The first SFR updated will be circulated by end next week. Club Captain: Annette advised she had some badges to hand out Roy & Zen Chapman, Jeff & Elaine Bud, Freda & Derek Regalia: Chris advised full stock of regalia. Librarian: Nothing to report Webmaster: Ian mentioned it’s been a busy year, as they have upgraded the webpage and encouraged people to look at it, the next years calendar events are on the web ( some dates may change), have a look it has lots of information or links to other MG organisations. Ian also mention this is his last year of webmaster as he has been doing it for a number of years too – volunteers are required. Doug thanked Ian for all his effort and said it’s a chance for a younger member who might wish to step up, training provided. Any Other Business: Doug asked if there was any other business and moved on to present awards – Due to the number of reduced meetings and events and the committee decided not to award some of the usual awards for 2020. Attendance Award – Intentionally left off until notified Octagon Award – Intentionally left off until notified Club Champion: Ladies - Sarah Fry Intermediate Club Champion – Peter Fry & Bruce Youngberg Club Champion - Sarah Fry Meeting closed: 20.14pm

MGCCWA: President’s Annual Report 2020:

2020 has been in all aspects, a very different year. It started off fine, with a comprehensive Social and Competition event programme planned for the year. Then that all fell apart in early March when our State Premier initiated the Covid lock down, plus the associated safety measures for all citizens and organisations. The introduction of the 2 Square metre per person venue capacity limit, resulted in the maximum capacity of our Club rooms being reduced to 26 persons, thus unfortunately we had to suspend the holding of General Meetings, as well as initially, all planned club events. In addition, the closure of State Borders, resulted in the 2019 MG National Meeting due to be held over the Easter weekend in Albury/Wodonga, being cancelled. Indeed the 2021 Natmeet has already been cancelled, thus the next Natmeet will be in 2022.

The club was not able to resume driving events until early Sunday 7th June, when Tony Ford organised a run for the MGA Register, which was attended by 21 MG’s and their owners, that was followed on June 16th by a Thursday Mid-Week Run and thereafter it was almost normal operations for our Club. [ Our Octagon erstwhile Editors produced a 3-month edition in July] Attendance at events slowly picked up but of course ‘Social Distancing, venue capacity limits and hand sanitizing rules applied [at least they were supposed to!] Since July we have more or less been able to drive our MG’s as, when and where we wished. Unlike many of our fellow Club members in other States and countries, who have had to endure significant restrictions on the use of their cars. 2020 will remembered as the year that we all probably wish to forget.

In light of the fact that we were not able to offer members any organised Club activities during the WA Covid Lockdown period, the Committee decided as a gesture for the situation, to rebate all 2020 members with a $10.00 reduction on their 2021 membership fees. This has been incorporated in all membership renewal notices to members, being circulated this month.

As you will see when we are again able to hold our General Meetings in our Clubrooms, they have been re-painted internally and also been given a good tidy up by a group of committee members. Our current lease on the Clubrooms expires on the 30th September next year and we will be seeking to agree another lease period with the City of Bayswater, preferably for at least another 5 years.

Even though 2020 has been a year of many activity restrictions and new Rules to comply with. A significant number of Competitive and Social events were nevertheless held, enabling members to use their MG’s on the road or on the track, which after all is one of the many joys of owning an MG and being a member of our club. It is very pleasing to be able to report that the club membership has shown a very positive increase this year, in spite of the challenges. Finishing the year with over 290 members, with 365 cars recorded on our database, of which 170 are MGB’s!

26

MG marque cars continue to be seen on the roads in many countries, with an ever-increasing number of dealerships, including our own John Hughes in Vic Park. MG Australia are currently marketing four different models, including a electric ZS version and soon to be added will be the MG5, with /Wagon versions. The club has a number of other local businesses who support us, please consider all of them when you are spending some of your dollars. ‘You know it makes sense’.

I wish to thank all my fellow committee members for their work for and support of the club, over the past twelve months, also an additional thankyou to those non committee members who have helped organise or assist with our events. We are a Members club and all participation, involvement and assistance with the operation of the club by members is and will be greatly appreciated.

I finish this by wishing all members and their families a

Merry Christmas and a MaGic New Year.
