It shouldn’t be expected that your run organiser also take care of that. 8 9 AHC WA – MG ZT/Rover 75 owners “sub-group” – founded in 2019! Brian Jarvis purchased a MG ZT 190+ for his road car, and Dale Clifford purchased a MG ZT 160 (1.8L 4 cyl. Turbo UK private import) to add to his collection. “Rover” Bill owns a Rover 75, as part of his collection. All are good cars and represent the last “British” Rovers and MGs. You get a lot of bang for your buck! The red MG ZT left is the 2002 pre-facelift model with the separate lights. 10 The MG ZT left is the post facelift 2004 model with the more “Euro- bland?” combined lights. 11 In 2001, three years after the launch of the Rover 75 and less than a year after the demerger of MG Rover from BMW, the MG ZT and MG ZT-T were launched. During the car’s development, the models were codenamed X10 and X11 for the saloon estate versions respectively. The basic shape and styling of the MG ZT remained the same as for the Rover but with changes to the front bumper, now with an integrated grille, and detailed alterations including colour coding of the waistline, a new boot lid plinth and different alloy wheels and tyre sizes. The interior featured revised seats and dashboard treatment, with new instrument faces. Engineering changes ranged from, upgraded suspension and brakes to revised engine tuning (from the Rover 75) for the petrol models, Development of the MG ZT was headed by Rob Oldaker, Product Development Director, with styling changes undertaken by Peter Stevens, who was previously responsible for the styling of the McLaren F1 and X180 version of the Lotus Esprit. The MG ZT only had one trim level, though the standard car could be ordered with “Plus” pack. MG ZT models were named after engine unit power output, ie; a 160ps V6 model was an MG ZT 160, and a 190ps V6 model with a “Plus” pack was an MG ZT 190+. A total of only 27,149 MG ZTs were produced, all in the Longbridge Plant, Birmingham between the years of 2001 (3 years after the launch of the Rover 75, and a year after the sale of MG Rover by BMW to the British “Phoenix Consortium”), and May 2005 (when MG Rover went bankrupt and were purchased by China’s Nanjing Automobile (now SAIC). It should be noted that this number includes all ZT estate models and the MG ZT 120 (1.8L 4 cyl), MG ZT 160 (early cars detuned V6, then 1.8L turbo 4 cyl), MG ZT 220 S (which included a supercharger engineered by the Perth “Sprintex company) and all the 2L BMW turbo diesel powered models. All of the diesels, the 120, and the 160 were not released in Australia. It has been stated on Keith Adams Austin-Rover web-site (aronline.co.uk) that a total of 2324 rover 75s AND MG ZTs were sold in Australia (could include NZ, too?). These relatively low numbers are probably the result of the “MG ZT 180 Plus” costing A$62,000 new in 2003. The MG ZT 260 (4.6L Ford V8 powered, rear wheel drive) sold new for A$90,000! The original MG ZT 190 was only available with 5-speed manual transmissions and is powered by a 2.5L V6 quad cam 24 valve engine producing 187 bhp and reaching 0-100 km/hr in 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 140mph (225km/hr). The ZT 160 (1800cc turbo, manual only) and 180 (5-speed auto only) had performance figures of 8.5/8.9 seconds 0 -100km/hr, and top speeds of 212/216 km/hr, respectively. When the MG name and designs were sold to SAIC, and the Rover name to Ford, “Phoenix” MG Rover had already planned a supercharged V8 MG ZT X 385, and a ZT / 75 Coupe, the latter mocked up in fibreglass in 2005 and externally looked remarkably like the Monaro CV8. These were never produced. 12 The “timber” finish proposed should appeal to AH 3000 Mk 3 drivers? 13 There are supposedly only 2 V8 Rover 75s in Australia. One was for sale recently for $29,000 SAIC continued to produce the Rover 75 and MG ZT as a MG 7 and a MG 7Z from 2007 for the China, UK, and other markets. Article written by Paul Robertson (AHC) 14 State Motorkhana Round 4 – Tiger Kart Club The final round for the year took place on Sunday 29th November at Tiger Kart Club. A big field of competitors saw 38 drivers take part across 5 categories. A nice mix of cars as usual from the specials, Mini Mokes, some bigger sedans and the class B cars which include our MGs. Lots of familiar faces and cars took part on what was a perfect day. Not too hot, not too sunny, but a little windy with the markers getting blown over regularly. Some new circuits this time proved a challenge wit plenty of wrong ways across the field including yours truly in my trusty MGF on the Double Hat circuit. My fellow MG drivers Sarah Fry in the green MGB roadster and Peter Fry in the white MGB Gt managed to avoid wrong way penalties however, so well done to them. The circuits were fast and great fun, especially the Mothballs and Spiro Slalom. With our team taking part in the club only runs, we didn’t participate in the reverse challenges, which meant we got to do the Spiro Slalom four times. Videos of all three of us in action have been posted to the MGCCWA Facebook page. Well worth checking out.
