As a Geordie and a Newcastle United supporter, I always kept a keen interest on what was happening on Tyneside in the early stages of my career at Southampton and Blackburn. Although it was common for clubs to sign foreign players in the early 1990s, the market wasn’t saturated the way it is now, but it was certainly unusual for teams to invest in foreign goalkeepers. And Pavel’s arrival on Tyneside certainly caused a stir. He turned up on the club’s doorstep when it was struggling at the wrong end of the old Second Division. It must have been a baptism of fire for the young Czech goalkeeper. Not only did he have to adapt to a new style of football he had to settle in to a new town and culture.

However, we acknowledge that given the dominance of Rangers1 demise over recent months, these figures may be looked at with a new perspective. THE EUROS The UEFA European Championships (The Euros) is the main football competition contested by national teams in Europe. It has been held every four years since 1960. The host(s) nations qualify automatically, whilst all other teams gain entry by qualifying from groups drawn before the tournament commences. The 14 European Championships tournaments to date have been won by nine different national teams, with Germany and Spain winning three times each. France has won twice, whilst the Soviet Union, Italy, Netherlands, Denmark, Greece and Czechoslovakia have each won once. The Henri Delaunay Trophy is awarded to the tournament winners. It is named in honour of Henri Delaunay, the first General Secretary of UEFA, who is credited with conceiving of the idea of a European championship competition. He died five years prior to the first tournament in 1960. The most recent championship, co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine in 2012, was won by Spain, who beat Italy 4–0 at the final in Kiev. • “And Maybe You Can Translate Also What I Say”: Interpreters in Football Press Conferences
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by OpenstarTs “And maybe you can translate also what I say”: interpreters in football press conferences Annalisa Sandrelli UNINT - University of International Studies of Rome (Italy) Abstract Today most professional football teams are multilingual; at the same time, the increasing media exposure of this sport has led to a growing number of press conferences involving players and coaches with limited proficiency in the language of the country where they play. As a result, there is a niche market for interpreters in professional football. This paper presents a case study based on a small corpus of press conferences organised for the offi- cial presentation of new players: its aim is to describe communication dynamics, common practices and pitfalls and to discuss interpreter roles in such settings. Introduction As a consequence of globalisation in sports, in recent years professional football has been characterised by the increasing mobility of players, referred to by Baines (2013: 207) as elite migrant athletes. The trend is especially marked in the main Eu- ropean football leagues, the so-called Big 5 (England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain), but also affects most European countries and some “new” football coun- tries, such as China, India, the United Arab Emirates, the US and Canada. A recent survey has revealed that in the 2013-2014 season 62.93% of footballers playing in the English Premier League were foreign nationals, followed by 54.56 % in the Italian Serie A, 41.45% in the German Bundesliga, 39.02% in the Spanish Liga and 32.34% in the French Ligue 1.
