MACHIDA-HIRANO (Genetic Resources Center, NARO) Received Sep. 14, 2020, Accepted Dec. 1, 2020 Corresponding author: K. MATSUSHIMA (e-mail: [email protected]) Summary Under the Plant Genetic Resources in Asia (PGRAsia) project, National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) and Cambodian Agricultural Research and Department Institute (CARDI) have conducted several collaborative explorations in Cambodia since 2014. As part of the project, we surveyed and gathered plant genetic resources in Southern Cambodia from October 1 to 10, 2019. In the survey, we explored the genetic resources in 14 districts of Southern Cambodia in Svay Rieng, Pery Veng, Kandal, Phnom Penh, Kampong Speu, Preah Sihanouk, Koh Kong, Kampot, and Takeo provinces and collected 85 accessions from farmers’ storages, back yards, or fields. The accessions corresponded to Solanaceae (34), Cucurbitaceae (35), Fabaceae (8), and Amaranthaceae (8). Among 34 Solanaceae accessions, 29 were from C. frutescens. As the present study was conducted in a flood-prone area, vegetable cultivation during the rainy season was low, and flood-tolerant luffa and hyacinth bean were considered important vegetables for cultivation.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Research Repository CARDI Soil and Water Science Technical Note No. 02 Land Capability Classification for Non-Rice Crops in Cambodia R.W. Bell1, V. Seng2, Noel Schoknecht3, S. Hin2, Wendy Vance1 and P.F. White3 1 School of Environmental Science, Murdoch University, Murdoch, WA 6150 2 Office of Soil and Water Sciences, Cambodian Agricultural Research and Development Institute, P.O. Box 01, Phnom Penh, Cambodia. 3 Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Baron-Hay Court, S. Perth WA 6151. Abstract Land capability needs to be assessed for a range of crops in specific agro-ecosystems of Cambodia to support moves to diversify crop production from the present heavy reliance on rice. Maize, soybean, mung bean, sesame and peanut appear to be the food crops of most interest initially. Usually soil constraints would be assessed for land capability classification from published land resource studies. Such information is generally unavailable for uplands in Cambodia at an appropriate scale. Hence further land resource assessment in the upland areas needs to be undertaken as a basis for a land capability assessment. Whilst a soil map and reports on soil constraints for lowland rice have been published, soil constraints for other crops have not yet been assessed for these soils. A framework for land capability classification was developed based on previous systems of land evaluation with modifications for Cambodia and to align the rating of land qualities to the Fertility Capability Classification. Land qualities were selected for tillage, crop germination and emergence, crop growth, and land and resource degradation risk.

  • Cambodia Page 1 of 20
Cambodia Page 1 of 20 Cambodia Country Reports on Human Rights Practices - 2006 Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor March 6, 2007 Cambodia is a constitutional monarchy with an elected government and a population of approximately 13.8 million. Following elections in 2003, in 2004 the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), led by Prime Minister Hun Sen, and the National United Front for a Neutral, Peaceful, Cooperative, and Independent Cambodia (FUNCINPEC), led by Prince Norodom Ranariddh, formed a coalition government. However, the CPP dominated the three branches of government and other national institutions, with most power concentrated in the hands of the prime minister. Although the civilian authorities nominally controlled the security forces, in practice security forces answered to the CPP leadership. The government's human rights record remained poor. Government agents committed extrajudicial killings, and security forces acted with impunity. There was little political will to address the failure by government authorities to adhere to the rule of law. Detainees were abused, often to extract confessions, and prison conditions were harsh. Human rights monitors reported arbitrary arrests and prolonged pretrial detention, underscoring a weak judiciary and denial of the right to a fair trial. Land disputes and forced evictions, often accompanied by violence, were a growing problem. The government restricted freedom of speech and press through the use of defamation and disinformation suits, controlled or influenced the content of television and radio broadcasts, and sometimes interfered with freedom of assembly. Corruption was endemic and extended throughout all segments of society, including the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government.

  • TPO-Annual-Report-2014
ANNUAL2014 REPORT Transcultural Psychosocial Organization Cambodia Dear Friends of TPO Cambodia, The year 2014 has been one of hard work, but also one of great joy because TPO and its staff have been preparing to celebrate TPO Cambodia’s 20th anniversary on 21 February 2015 under the auspices of His Majesty, Samdach Preah Bat Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia. Throughout 2014, this has helped us to look back on what we have achieved and what remains to be done, and to look ahead at what are emerging mental health issues and what needs to be done about them in the future. Over the years, TPO has significantly contributed to building a mental health system in Cambodia from the ground up. Our community mental health work has helped improve the mental health and well-being of more than 23,000 women and girls who have survived gender-based violence and sexual assault. It has also been instrumental in establishing a support network responding to the need for mental health care in the Cambodian community. TPO has also helped establish a nationwide mental health system by setting up mental health services in the provinces of Kampong Speu, Pursat, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Kampong Thom, Kampong Cham and Tbong Khmum. All these mental health clinics are still providing mental health care for patients suffering from a range of mental health issues as we speak. In addition, TPO has been working hard towards achieving its goal of becoming a Center of Excellence, the leading NGO in the field of mental health in Cambodia. Just as we did in 2014, we will continue to contribute knowledge in the field of mental health through research and publications, and collaborations with agencies and universities abroad will play an ongoing role in building TPO staff’s capacity to work effectively and ensure maximum impact of our work.
