During a lively question and answer period every member of the audience commented and pointed toward a broader application of such a theology to the great numbers of peoples on the move in the world today. Symbolic acts of individual church leaders from various churches and the contributions of numerous scholars in formal dialogues and in the preparation of common statements were acknowledged. He went on to claim that many of the hopes instilled by these various ecumenical efforts have not been realized. -

INTERCOMMUNION: PROTESTANT ATTITUDES AND POLICIES I. THE DIVIDED CHURCH The very term intercommunion gives expression, on the one hand, to the tragic fact of a divided Christendom and, on the other hand, symbol- izes the increasingly shared yearning for mutual recognition and ecumenical fellowship among those segments of Christendom which we call denom- inations, communions or churches. The very fact that we have to speak of Churches instead of the Church is part of the tragedy, and part of our sinful involvement. Only in more recent times have Protestant people begun to recognize and take seriously the tragic consequences of the Reformation in the rise of denominationalism. Altars have been set up against altars, ecclesiastical "iron curtains" have divided Christendom into hostile camps and led to many unchristian consequences which we today, both Catholics and Protestants, are being led by the Holy Spirit to confess with shame and sorrow. The subject of intercommunion is very complex due to so many different theological traditions and ecclesiastical usages in Christendom. The attitudes of the churches vary all the way from a denial of the very idea of intercommunion to an entirely open communion. Between these extremes we find various degrees of intercommunion such as the recogni- tion of an occasional practice of intercommunion between different denom- inations under special circumstances, or a regular intercommunion based on mutual agreement between two distinct denominations. In the latter case, when a full mutual recognition of the ministries is included, inter- communion may also include the right of intercelebration. Generally speaking intercommunion is regarded by the Churches which have autho- rized it as a step toward or an anticipation of an organic union of the Churches. -

for the Life of Faith A UTUMN 2013 A Publication of the Collegeville Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research Editors’ Note Theologian James Gustafson once referred to the church as housing “treasure in earthen vessels.” Treasure may abide, but earthenware is notoriously apt to chip, crack, and shatter. It’s an appropriate image for our time. Far and wide, scholars are diagnosing a permanent state of decline in the institutional church as we know it, at least in the West. According to nearly every marker of institutional health, the church is failing. It is bitterly divided, financially strapped, plagued by abuses of power, shrinking in numbers, and poorly regarded in public perception. Tellingly, a growing number of prominent Christian figures are quite willing to bid farewell to the church—the very institution that reared them and upon which their livelihood depends. With titles such as Jesus for the Non-Religious, Saving Jesus from the Church, and Christianity After Religion, various church leaders are suggesting that the church may be more of a hindrance than a help to Christian identity and mission in today’s context. It’s hard not to hear echoes of theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer who, over 75 years ago, warned in his book The Cost of Discipleship of a church “overlaid with so much human ballast—burdensome rules and regulations, false hopes and consola- tions,” that it stood in danger of abandoning its central call to follow the way of Jesus. Even if the church is coming to some sort of an end, Christianity is still very much with us. -

This dissertation examines the relationship between liturgy and spirituality in the ecumenical movement, and in particular how four factors, namely the Charismatic Renewal, inculturation, secularization, and reflections on Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry (BEM), have had an impact on its development. Chapter One introduces this study by focusing on the particular connectedness between liturgy and spirituality. Chapters Two to Five critically examine the four challenges. Chapter Two examines the impact that the Charismatic Renewal had on liturgy and spirituality. It discusses the interest that the ecumenical movement had in the Charismatic Renewal, as the ecumenical movement realized what the Renewal could offer them. Chapter Three concerns itself with the challenges that inculturation poses, especially to the liturgy. One prominent question is: How do Christians proclaim Christ faithfully in different cultures? This chapter deals with the fact that inculturation involves dialogue between liturgy and culture – a dialogue which leads to mutual enrichment. -

Jeffrey Gros, fsc Lasallian Ministry and the Unity of Christians MEL Bulletin 10 • What is your experience with other Christian churches in your Lasallian ministry? • What challenges do you face in implementing the ecu- menical initiatives of the Church in your ministry? • What have been the most positive experiences for you and your ministry along the road of the Church toward deeper communion with other Christians? • What resources would best serve your ministry in the process of uniting Christians? 5 Introduction In educational service of the poor, outreach to fellow Christians as partners in ministry and as communities we serve, is integral to Catholic identity and Lasallian ministry. The Catholic Church is committed to the long pilgrimage to full reconciliation among all Christian churches through the process of collaboration, prayer and dialogue. This is particularly important where Catholics are a majority in the community. The Catholic school is a privileged place for spiritual formation, dialogue and education. The General Chapter reaffirmed this dimension of Lasallian com- mitment: Among Lasallian institutions, the school is an ideal place for an interreligious and ecumenical dialogue which will bear witness to the values of all forms of faith. Lasallians working in universities have the opportunity to contribute to our mission, in a special way, by their commitment to research in the field of the faith development of young people, whatever their religion, and by training and accompaniment of those persons entrusted with the difficult task of sharing the Good News in an increasingly secu- larized and multi-religious context. The Lasallian charism is already a source of inspiration in the con- text of multi-cultural and multi-religious societies. -

ECCLESIOLOGY/ECUMENISM Topic: Ecumenical Dialogue Discussion Episcope/Episcopacy Convener: Jeffrey Gros, Memphis Theological Seminary Presenters: John Erickson, St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Seminary David Thompson, Cambridge University Dr. John Erickson, Dean of St. Valdimir’s Orthodox Seminary, presented a paper outlining some of the developments in ecumenical theological discussions of the episcopacy. He noted the Orthodox Catholic texts, “The Mystery of the Church and of the Eucharist in the Light of the Mystery of the Holy Trinity,” (Munich, 1982), and “The Sacrament of Order in the Sacramental Structure of the Church with Particular Reference to the Importance of Apostolic Succession for the Sanctification and Unity of the People of God,” (New Valaamo, 1987) published before the post 1989 shifts had made concern for Easter Catholic central to this dialogue. The work of Lanne, Zizioulas and Tillard, their return to the anti-Nicean fathers, and Eucharistic ecclesiology are evident in this work. This appeal to the first centuries of the Church has been extremely helpful in this dialogue and work in Faith and Order and with some of the Reformation churches. However, this ecclesiology of the early Church, rooted as it is in small Mediterranean communi- ties, seems somewhat abstract when we see the large, populous communities in which bishops minister today. Nevertheless, it is helpful to look at how three emphases emerge in this retrieval, and the values they contribute to the renewal of ecumenical thinking on the episcopacy: 1) Ignatius of Antioch focuses attention on the bishop as president of the Eucharistic assembly, gathering the gifts of the people, as an alter-Christus, a visible center of the community. -

As milestones of the global interfaith movement, American religious freedom and pluralism, and the relation of religion to modernity, the Chicago Parliaments of Religions offer a unique window through which to view this Catholic struggle at work in the religious public square created by the Parliaments and the evolution of that struggle over the course of the century framed by the two Chicago events. In relation to other religions, the Catholic Church stretched itself from an exclusivist position of being the only true and good religion to an inclusivist position of recognizing that truth and good can be present in other religions. Uniquely, Catholic involvement in the centennial Parliament made the Church stretch itself even further, beyond the exclusivist-inclusivist spectrum into a pluralist framework in which the Church acted humbly as one religion among many. -

John Baptist de La Salle, John Henry Newman, and the Prospect of a Catholic Work College Paul Schweigl1 Introduction Silver Lake College in Manitowoc, Wisconsin recently announced its decision to become the nation’s first ‘Catholic Work College,’ hoping to eventually join the Work Colleges Consortium (WCC). This significant step is intended to help the College better incorporate a level of practicality into its normal liberal arts curriculum while simultaneously allowing students to earn a college degree at a significant discount. The WCC’s aim, then, is to help the students keep their college costs to a minimum while also using the mandated work study as an educational tool, supplementing classroom study. Silver Lake intends to begin phasing the new model in beginning in the 2016-2017 academic year, and apply for formal Work College status in 2018- 2019. The WCC extols the virtues of its model for higher education, claiming that it “builds character, work ethic, leadership and competence in critical thinking and time management skills.”2 Not surprisingly, people across the country have taken notice. An article in The New Yorker describes how Work Colleges have “found themselves…on the forefront of many trends in higher education, with their traditional benefits dovetailing with growing concerns about student debt, sustainability, community, and employability.”3 That said, the Work College model is not new; Berea College is said to have adopted the model before the Civil War.
