Arxiv:1209.2974V1 [Nlin.AO] 13 Sep 2012 Europe, Current Demand Is Rapidly Approaching the Upper Limits of Existing Capacity
BIO-DEVELOPMENT OF MOTORWAY NETWORKS IN THE NETHERLANDS: A SLIME MOULD APPROACH Final version of this paper is published in Advances in Complex Systems (2012) DOI: 10.1142/S0219525912500348 Andrew Adamatzky1,Michael Lees2 and Peter M.A. Sloot2;3;4 1 University of the West of England, Bristol BS16 1QY, United Kingdom [email protected] 2 Nanyang Technological University, Singapore [email protected] 3 University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands 4 National Research University ITMO, Russia [email protected] Abstract Plasmodium of acellular slime mould Physarum polycephalum is a very large eukary- otic microbe visible to the unaided eye. During its foraging behaviour the plasmod- ium spans sources of nutrients with a network of protoplasmic tubes. In this paper we attempt to address the following question: is slime mould capable of computing transport networks? By assuming the sources of nutrients are cities and protoplas- mic tubes connecting the sources are motorways, how well does the plasmodium approximate existing motorway networks? We take the Netherlands as a case study for bio-development of motorways, while it has the most dense motorway network in arXiv:1209.2974v1 [nlin.AO] 13 Sep 2012 Europe, current demand is rapidly approaching the upper limits of existing capacity. We represent twenty major cities with oat flakes, place plasmodium in Amsterdam and record how the plasmodium spreads between oat flakes via the protoplasmic tubes. First we analyse slime-mould-built and man-built transport networks in a framework of proximity graphs to investigate if the slime mould is capable of com- puting existing networks. -
The Milk Meisters
The Migt M¢i=ter= 9t3/03 2 51 AM The Milk Meisters Our ranking of the nation's largest dairy farms To comment or suggest additions to our Milk Meisters list send your responce to [email protected] By Dan Looker Business Editor A narrow blacktop shaded by cottonwoods leads to a white Victorian farmhouse, headquarters for Joseph Gallo Farms. Upstairs, in a modest office, Mike Gallo works at his desk. He wears a long-sleeved shirt, no tie. The informality is deceptive. This is a business with $50 million in annual sales. Gallo's father, Joseph, younger brother of winemakers Emest and Julio, built his own empire on another drink--milk. It's made into cheese and sold in 12 states, Mexico and Japan. With five herd sites scattered near Atwater, Califomia, this dairy seems smaller than Braum's of Oklahoma, where 10,000 cows pass through one huge milking parlor. But Gallo's, with 14,500 cows, is the nation's largest milking entity, according to Successful Farming magazine's first survey of the nation's largest dairy farms. 20 largest dairy farms Ranked by cows in producing herds on August 1, 1995 Successful Farming exclusive RANK NAME HEADQUARTERS HERD OTHER # COWSOWNED OF OPERATION LOCATIONS BUSINESSES 1 Joseph Gallo Farms Atwater, CA California Cheese 14,500 2 Hettinga Dairies Corona, CA Arizona, California, Nevada Bottling 12,900 3 Aurora Dairy Westminster, CO Colorado, Idaho, Texas 12,000 4 Larson Dairy Okeechobee, FL Florida 11,200 5 Braum0s Dairy Farm Tuttle, OK Oklahoma Ice cream, milk ii, 000 6 Las Uvas Dairy Hatch, NM New Mexico 10,000 7 McArthur Farms Okeechobee, FL Florida Citrus 8,800 8 GenFarms Coraopolis, PA Georgia, Florida, Maryland 8,500 9 Knevelbaard Dairies Corona, CA California 7,700 I0 Shamrock Farms Chandler, AZ Arizona Food service 6, 900 ii Arizona Dairy Co. -

Clusters Agriculture
Clusters Agriculture How can clusters in agriculture be measured and identified in the Netherlands? Wageningen UR, 2011 M.A. Schouten Registration number: 890713747040 Economics and Policy (BEB) Agricultural Economics and Rural Policy Group Supervisor: prof. dr. W.J.M. Heijman Second supervisor: dr. J.A.C. van Ophem Abstract There are several methods to measure clusters in agribusiness: . Shift share analysis: a method of estimating the competitiveness of a certain area. Location quotient: a tool to measure economic strength of a certain industry in a region. Clustering based on number of farms. Clusters can be identified by type of knowledge: . Factor endowment clusters: clusters that exist because of comparative advantages. Techno clusters: clusters that are based on sharing of knowledge. Historic knowhow-based clusters: clusters that exist because of traditional knowhow advantages. Clusters can be identified by type of development: . Geographical clusters: clustering because of the location or availability of resources. Sectorial clusters: clustering of firms from the same sector. Horizontal clusters: clustering of firms on a horizontal level. Vertical clusters: clustering of firms from the same supply chain. Location quotients agriculture in the Netherlands: According to location quotients calculation (based on number of jobs in agriculture and number of farms) agriculture is overrepresented in the less urbanized and more remote parts of the Netherlands with the exception of horticulture; horticulture is mainly located in the urbanized western part of the Netherlands. Cluster analysis based on number of farms in the Netherlands: . Arable farms: mainly located in the provinces Zeeland, Flevoland and Groningen where the soil type is suitable for arable farms. -
Learning from the Netherlands to Improve Outcomes for New Zealand's Children
1000 Days to get it right for every child The Netherlands Study Learning from the Netherlands to improve outcomes for New Zealand’s children A report prepared by Rowe Davies Research for Every Child Counts He Mana tō ia Tamati - Every Child Counts He Mana tō ia Tamati - Every Child Counts, formed in 2004, is and coalition of organisations and individuals; led by Barnardos, Plunket, Save the Children, Unicef and Te Kahui Mana Ririki. We believe that a positive, economically sustainable future for New Zealand is only possible if: Children are placed at the centre of government policy and planning Child poverty is eradicated Child maltreatment is reduced Every child is given a good start in their early years The status of children and of the child-rearing roles of fami- lies, whānau, hapū and iwi are increased. 1000 days to get it right for every child The first 1000 days of a child’s life are critical to their long term de- velopment. One thousand days is also approximately the duration of one term of parliament. So we have about 1000 days to get it right. Getting it right in those first 1000 days means today’s young chil- dren are given every opportunity to develop their full potential as healthy, emotionally mature, socially engaged and well-educated, productive adults. Low and ineffective public investment in the early years of child- hood costs us dearly – approximately 3 per cent of GDP. Things need to change. That’s why we are campaigning to make it a priority issue through the 1000 days of this term of parliament. -
