The Potters of Espiritu Santo A socio-historical study of survival and loss of tradition A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology at The University of Waikato by Elizabeth Marie Pascal 2020 Abstract The Potters of Espiritu Santo : A socio-historical study of survival and loss of tradition. This dissertation looks at the traditional pottery of the Cumberland Peninsula on the island of Espiritu Santo in the context of its relationships with its makers, their history, traditional institutions and contact experiences, and also with other pottery in Vanuatu, in particular, the different pottery made further south on the same coast, that of the people of Wusi. The relationship between potteries is a persistent theme, starting with an attempt to trace their inheritance from the Lapita pottery believed to be made by the first colonisers of the region, and going on to compare the two technologies with each other and other ethnographically known potteries in Oceania. With doubt remaining about their precise relationship, the roles of contact history and cultural practice in the environments of the two areas are looked at to account for first an enhancement and then a decline of pottery making on the Cumberland Peninsula, while the comparative environmental harshness of the Wusi area has, in similar cultural and historic conditions, actually acted to help preserve pottery making there. ii Acknowledgements The idea of doing a project on the pottery and potters of Vanuatu was first conceived when I visited the west coast of Santo in 1993, so has been over 25 years in the making. Several of the people who gave me help and encouragement have since died: Professor Roger Green, my first supervisor, Pasta Bill Camden, who facilitated my first visit to the Weskos, Chief William of Tuturu who hosted our first visit to the villages of Big Bay, linguists Terry Crowley and Daryl Tryon, and my friends and wonderful hostesses Rovo Tavue and Lako Molissa. And since my last visit to the Notwes I am grieved to hear of the death of the last potter from the Pelia, Olfala Pala. Vanuatu Cultural Centre Field Worker, Chief Alty Ezekiel of Valpei, invited me on my second visit to the Weskos in 2004 and helped and hosted us over the next six years. Vanuatu Mission BARRY OLIVER Barry Oliver, Ph.D., retired in 2015 as president of the South Pacific Division of Seventh-day Adventists, Sydney, Australia. An Australian by birth Oliver has served the Church as a pastor, evangelist, college teacher, and administrator. In retirement, he is a conjoint associate professor at Avondale College of Higher Education. He has authored over 106 significant publications and 192 magazine articles. He is married to Julie with three adult sons and three grandchildren. The Vanuatu Mission is a growing mission in the territory of the Trans-Pacific Union Mission of the South Pacific Division. Its headquarters are in Port Vila, Vanuatu. Before independence the mission was known as the New Hebrides Mission. The Territory and Statistics of the Vanuatu Mission The territory of the Vanuatu Mission is “Vanuatu.”1 It is a part of, and reports to the Trans Pacific Union Mission which is based in Tamavua, Suva, Fiji Islands. The Trans Pacific Union comprises the Seventh-day Adventist Church entities in the countries of American Samoa, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. Barker-Hudson O.,;^, /ZO. ^ ll pUG-^Y^ South Pacific Commission Noumea, New Caledonia April 1989 UBHArt/ SOUTH PACIFIC COMMISSION EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This project was carried out to assess the distribution, abundance, cultural importance and threats to the dugong in Vanuatu. The study was carried out by a postal questionnaire survey and an aerial survey, commencing in October 1987. About 600 copies of the questionnaire were circulated in Vanuatu, and about 1000 kilometres of coastline surveyed from the air. Dugongs were reported or seen to occur in nearly 100 localities, including all the major islands and island groups of Vanuatu. The animals were generally reported to occur in small groups; only in three instances were groups of more than 10 animals reported. Most people reported that dugong numbers were either unchanged or were increasing. There was no evidence that dugongs migrate large distances or between islands in the archipelago, although movements may occur along the coasts of islands and between closely associated islands. Dugong hunting was reported from only a few localities, although it is caught in more areas if the chance occurs. Most hunting methods use traditional means, mainly the spear. Overall, hunting mortality is low, even in areas reported to regularly hunt dugongs. Accordingly, the dugong does not seem to be an important component of the subsistence diet in any part of Vanuatu, even though it is killed mainly for food.

    C. HOUSEHOLD LIVING (DWELLING) CONDITIONS 53 Living conditions vary considerably across Vanuatu, based in part on access to infrastructure and utilities. Those living outside urban areas and towns tend to go without electricity and often lack piped water and sewage systems. On most islands, almost all households mainly rely on wood or coconut shell for cooking – even in Port Vila almost half of households still cook using these sources. In the more urbanized parts of the country, houses have concrete or wood floors. Many households in Vanuatu live in basic conditions. For instance, even though traditional materials appear to be widely used for housing across the country, only 17% of households report living in dwellings with walls made of makeshift or improvised materials. A generally low access to electricity in Vanuatu is an area of concern. At the national level, only 38% of households report having electricity (from main grid, solar, or own generator) as a main source of lighting. Outside of the key urban areas (Port Vila and Luganville), less than 20% of households have access to the main grid, and even that number may be driven by those households that live close to provincial centers. In fact, in most ACs, less than 2% of the population has access to the main grid. Solar power has become an important source of electricity, especially in more remote locations. In some ACs, up to 50% of households report reliance on solar power as the main source of lighting. The national average for this source is 6.3% (as of 2009). Only about 2% of the population relies on small petrol generators, which could be a reflection of high costs of fuel.
