I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching the Chinese Language and Culture module to Rang Clarke, in association with our visiting Chinese teacher Ren Laoshi who takes the students once per week. The Direct

Soapbox Competition by Phillip Simango

On the 16th November 2015, I represented Luttrellstown Community College at the Europe Direct Soapbox Competition Final. The school has had a representative at the fnal every year for the past three years and I am the 2nd student to ever qualify for the fnal from Luttrellstown Community College.

LCC public speakers The regional fnal, held in Blanchardstown library, was a great win. I came 1st place with two of my classmates, Elizabeth Imole in a close 2nd and Ann Adekunle in 3rd place. It was a Luttrellstown CC dominated fnal! Thankfully, I won an iPad mini for 1st place and I then progressed to the fnal.

It was a privilege to represent my school at such a prestigious competition. The fnal was held in Farmleigh House which was attended by the Minister for Education and the MEP representing the Sligo-Leitrim area. The winner of the soapbox received €1,000 and a trip to European Commission in Brussels, Belgium. Though I did not win I came in a very close third place with two people coming in joint frst place. It was an amazing experience where I greatly developed my oratory skills, especially with my closest classmates supporting me. Because of the soapbox, I am now the captain of the school debating team with two of my classmates. LCC success in the fnal Drama Club - A class act! by Adam Keely & Emily Penrose-White (3B, Field)

Drama helps you increase your self-esteem and confdence; learn the skills of listening, negotiating and memorising and to become comfortable around other people. During our many years of taking part in drama we have gotten many opportunities to work on our focus and mental agility all the while having great fun. We often take part in freeze frames, mimes and ‘improvs’ on given a random topic such as “A break up over a stupid argument” or “The evolution of the Kardashians” and we try making it as entertaining as possible.

So far we have taken part in our school musical, “Hairspray” in 2014. We have also gone on trips to the Bord Gais Energy Theatre to see “Singing in the Rain” in 2014 and to the National Concert Hall for “Sister Act” in 2015.This year we have been LCC drama club focusing on improvisation and are hoping to start working on What started out a just a drama group has become so much the Shakespearian play, “Romeo and Juliet”. Although we have more. We have bonded so much over the years we have all had so many great memories together, if we had to choose certainly made friends for life. We welcome any new members a favourite it would without a doubt be when we were told to to our close group with open arms and try our best to make summarise our favourite movie series in two minutes! them comfortable around us

Women in Technology

Transition Year girls took part in a three day program in the Institution of Technology in Blanchardstown with the purpose of making all young girls comfortable with technology and science, and to break the stereotype that this career path is more suitable for boys than girls. The trip took place from the 12th to the 14th of January.

I.T.B. campus On the frst day a female professor of computer science in the college, Aoife, welcomed us and we were then directed Later, we were given a tour around the I.T.B. grounds. Aoife was to a lecture room. Aoife gave every girl a pack with a booklet our guide. She showed us the building where students learned about the Institute, a course list, and some I.T.B. merchandise. about mechanical technology. One impressive project was a Aoife and other female professors made presentations about device which was made for a person without his lower limbs. their experience in the institution studying technology and We also visited the Aeromechanics section and the Computer computer science. My group was brought into a conference room were other ladies in the company told their stories about their adventures with technology. Then, the ladies asked us to come up with an application that could be used on a mobile device. Safat Dao from Rang Henry won a Polaroid camera for her idea! Well Done!

The trip organised by I.T.B. and Pay Pal was a very pleasant experience and it shed light on the whole idea of studying technology and computer science. Seeing that at least half of the students in the institute were female, in a way it gave me a lot of confdence.

Taken to cyberbullying awareness

On the 18th of January junior students got the chance to experience a concert from the Irish up and coming band Taken. All the junior years sat down in the library and our hearts were lit up by Richard, Eoghan and Ste, the members of Taken. They delivered an important talk on cyber bullying that was really important as our school is one of the very few schools to start the iPad initiative, and are actively using iPads in our day-to-day school work. Not only did they discuss why people cyberbully, they also told us ways to stop cyberbullying which I think was very important .They didn't leave without singing one more song, Love yourself by Justin Bieber and then they gave out autographs All in all, it was an exciting day for our school.
