dont smile at me

Billie Eilish is a 17-year old girl from Los Angeles, California. She was born and raised into a family of musicians and it shows. Her eldest brother, Finneas O’Connell, was the biggest influencer Billie had growing up. Finneas actually had his own band and wrote the song titled

‘Ocean Eyes’. Billie started gaining recognition after she performed “Ocean eyes” and released it online. After successfully releasing the record “Bellyache”, which Finneas helped record, she released her debut EP, “dont smile at me” lowercase, no apostrophe, in August 2017. She was only 15-years-old.

Billie’s parents are Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell. Her father played the piano and the ukulele, her mother wrote songs which all inspired Billie to make a career in music. At the age of 8-years-old she joined a choir and sang with them for three years. At 11 she started writing and composing her own songs. That’s all the history there is to it, she’s only 17. Don’t

Smile at me was released through Interscope Records. Billie signed with Interscope records shortly after her internet breakthrough and has been releasing singles ever since then. Billie performed lived around North America and her performances included a band.

Her dark lyricism and beautiful voice compliments cohesively. The values she presents is honesty, wearing your heart on your sleeves, and words are so powerful. In this EP there is a plethora of storytelling, but the feelings the words inflict on you are truly amazing. Her lyrics include words that are hard for people to say, this is where honesty comes in. In her song

“Hostage”, Billie talks about the love for her lover. She represents herself as this obsessive character that wants to keep this special someone to herself. One of my favorite songs on this project is “”. In this Billie is addressing her lack of self-confidence and self-deprecating emotions. The audience of her EP can literally be anyone. I’ve seen live performances where she brings tiny children on stage and sang to them. Her artistry is far from childish considering her age, which makes it so easy to relate to her music. Although you can view this project as dark and cynical, it can also be viewed as peaceful and lovely. It’ll be very hard for me to sit here and gear her audience towards a specific age group. I can’t. She is a new voice to this generation but, can also teach something to the older generations, and be an inspiration to the upcoming ones.

Her very own brother, Finneas O’Connell’, is the producer of “don’t smile at me”. He played a significant role in Billie’s entire career. She wrote the songs with him and he produces her music. The publishing company of her EP is UMPG.
