African Butterfly News celebrates its first year of existence; the first edition, 2016-5, was circulated in September last year. The photographic competition commenced in August 2016, so the annual award will be made in the next, Spring Edition – for purposes of the photographic competition, the season starts in August and ends in July. Dave and Hanna Edge, LepSoc Africa’s Treasurer and Membership Secretary respectively, were caught up in this drama, and had to evacuate their house (refer to Dave’s eyewitness account below). Fortunately, the building survived the fire, although the nearby Brenton Blue Reserve was incinerated. All fences, sign boards and marker-posts were destroyed – it is hoped that some larvae or pupae of the Brenton Blue (Orachrysops niobe) are still alive, safely underground. See a report under COREL under the “Projects” section. Some of you may have seen an article in the Sunday Times, by Aaron Hyman, a friend of Christopher Dobson. Type-species: Durbania amakosa Trimen, by monotypy. The genus Durbania belongs to the Family Lycaenidae Leach, 1815; Subfamily Poritiinae Doherty, 1886; Tribe Pentilini Aurivillius, 1914. The other genera in the Tribe Pentilini in the Afrotropical Region are Durbaniella, Durbaniopsis, Alaena, Ptelina, Pentila, Telipna, Ornipholidotos, Torbenia and Cooksonia. Allyn Director, Allyn Museum of Entomology It has long been thought that the egg stage of butterflies has both an actual and. a potential value in determining or understanding the phylogeny and evolution of members of the order (Scudder, 1889; Chapman, 1896a, 1896b). * Within the Ly caenidae, several works beginning with Doherty (1886) and as recent as Clark and Dickson's (1956, 1971) excellent research in South Africa, have indicated the taxonomic usefulness of the egg stage. Recently, more life history studies of particular lycaenid genera (Shields, 1973, 1974)+ or species (Nakamura, 1976; Downey and Allyn, 1979) have included scan electron photographs of the egg stage, and provided a new and detailed ultrastructu,ral view. Most of these studies presented only the photographs or descriptions, but did not attempt to analyze similarities or differences of the included eggs with others. In our own ultrastructural studies, we have become increasingly aware of the lack of comparative details in order to assess the importance of observed differences. With this in mind, it was decided to reassess the chorionic sculpturing of available lycaenid eggs by means of scan electron microscopy. As incomplete as such a survey might be, it might still provide a comparative basis against which descriptions of single species in the future might be evaluated. -

Eskom Holdings Limited ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR THE PROPOSED NUCLEAR POWER STATION (‘NUCLEAR-1’) AND ASSOCIATED INFRASTRUCTURE Terrestrial Invertebrate Assessment Ecocheck February 2014 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY During the two field surveys of August – September 2012 and December 2013, 605 invertebrate species were collected at the 51 sample points at Duynefontein, Bantamsklip and Thyspunt. Of the 605 species, 138 species were only found at Duynefontein, 205 species only at Bantamsklip and 166 species were only sampled at Thyspunt. Twenty-seven species were only found within the Western Strandveld area (including Duynefontein and Bantamsklip only), and 69 eurytopic species (wide geographic distribution) were sampled. The invertebrates found during the two field investigations included snails, centipedes, millipedes, amphipods, ticks, scorpions, spiders and insects. Most of the species were identified to family level; 133 species were identified to genus or species level. A Wishbone Trapdoor Spider of the genus Spiroctenus Simon, 1889 was collected at the Bantamsklip site during the December 2013 field investigation. A very good series of live specimens were sent to specialist Ian Engelbrecht, including several sub-adult males. The species is likely to be an undescribed species of Spiroctenus Simon, 1889 (it is impossible to be certain until the sub-adult males have reached maturity); the same species was misidentified during the first survey as a species of Ancylotrypa Simon, 1889 (Wafer-lid Trapdoor Spider). A species of Common Baboon Spider of the genus Harpactira Ausserer, 1871 was also collected at the Bantamsklip site. The specimen collected is designated as Harpactira cf. cafreriana (Walckenaer, 1837), the Cape Orange Baboon Spider, but positive identification is not possible until adult males of the population at Bantamsklip are collected (only a female was collected during the December 2013 field investigation). -

SPRING EDITION: SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER AFRICAN 2017- 5 THE BUTTERFLY LEPIDOPTERISTS’ SOCIETY OF AFRICA NEWS LATEST NEWS Welcome to the Spring edition of African Butterfly News! I trust everyone has dusted off their nets, recharged their camera batteries and sorted out their home chores in readiness for the coming season. With a few exceptions, the 2016 - 2017 season was one to forget, with generally small butterfly- emergences, few significant new records and severe weather conditions, culminating in the catastrophic fire in the Southern Cape in June. Hopefully the coming season will be better... LepSoc Africa (LSA) have been busy with conservation efforts (refer to the report below on the Margate water pipeline saga) and new ventures, including the Aloeides and Kedestes Conservation Projects. Mark Williams very kindly offered to perform an editing role for the Newsletter – hopefully this copy (and the previous three editions) is relatively free of taxonomic errors or spelling mistakes! This magazine relies on material from you, the members of LepSoc Africa. Please forward Jeremy Dobson ([email protected]) any news, or photographs that might be of interest. Margate Pipeline Saga (Simon Joubert) Some of you will be familiar with the Margate typelocality of the rare Coastal Rocksitter (Durbania amakosa albescens) and Margate Ketsi Blue (Lepidochrysops ketsi leucomacula). A potentially devastating ecological incident - the construction of a large diameter bulk-water pipeline through the site - has (hopefully) been averted due to the efforts of LepSoc Africa's KZN branch. Steve Woodhall picked up on the proposed development and alerted KZN Nature Conservation (Adrian Armstrong and Jenny Longmore). -

You may notice that the seasonal title of the newsletter has disappeared. Both Rob Plowes and Szabolcs Sáfián have independently pointed out the inappropriateness of say “Late Summer” in an e-magazine that covers the entire Afrotropical (sub-Saharan) region. From now on, the newsletter will be titled by a month (January, March, May, July, September or November), dealing with news from the preceding two months. Refer to the back-page for links to all previous editions, or visit the LepSoc Africa website: http://lepsocafrica.org/ Cameron McMaster (Dave Edge) Cameron McMaster, one of our oldest members, who made many contributions to our knowledge of the butterflies of the Eastern Cape, passed away recently. He was acknowledged by the naming of two species after him - Aloeides macmasteri and Trimenia macmasteri. Cameron was also a keen botanist and discovered a long list of new species as well as rediscovering several that had not been seen for a long time. The Society extends its condolences to his wife Rhoda and his family. A full obituary will be published in Metamorphosis. Botanical Education Trust awards 2018 (Charles Botha) As is the case every year, the demand for grant funding far exceeded the amount available. Only income derived from investments is used, as all donations received are invested for future funding of applicants. Six applications which, in the opinion of the Trustees, would best serve the conservation of our indigenous flora were selected, totaling R115 000. -

He is busy with a Ph.D for which he registered at the Department of Conservation Ecology at the University of Stellenbosch in 2013. Reinier’s experience includes being a lecturer in ecology and zoology at the North West University, Potchefstroom Campus (1998-2008). Reinier collaborates with a number of institutes, organizations and universities on animal and plant research. In research Reinier specializes in conservation biology, threatened butterfly species, vegetation dynamics and ant assemblages at butterfly habitats as well as enhancing quantitative studies on butterflies of Africa. He has published extensively in the fields of taxonomy, biogeography and ecology in popular journals, peer-reviewed scientific journals and as co-author and co-editor of books (kindly see attached list of publications). Reinier presented several oral papers locally and internationally. Reinier’s passion for ecology and taxonomy originated with his hobby of collecting butterflies at the age of four, and he has sustained this passion including his discovery of a number of new butterfly species. His multidisciplinary background in botany and zoology as well as his considerable experience in the veld and wilderness facilitate informed decision making in environmental management and biodiversity conservation. However, persistent bacterial symbioses have not been found in Lepidoptera, despite the fact that perhaps 99% of the species in this order are herbivorous. We surveyed bacterial communities in the guts of larvae from 31 species of lycaenid butterflies whose caterpillars had diets ranging from obligate carnivory to strict herbivory.
